Two Arrested In Atmore Businessman Murder Case

June 28, 2012

Two Atmore residents have been arrested in connection with the murder of a local businessman Tuesday morning.

De’Anthony Dailey, 16, and Damien Jones, 21, were arrested by Atmore Police Department investigators without incident in connection with the murder of 38-year old  Kendrick Lamon Dortch.

Daily was charged with capital murder, robbery first degree and two counts of burglary, and Jones was charged with robbery first degree. Both were also charged with two counts of burglary of a vehicle in cases that were unrelated to Dortch’s murder.

Investigators said Dortch was a victim of a random  robbery and did not know his assailants.

Atmore Police said more arrests are possibly forthcoming in the case.

Dortch, 38, was discovered dead in the parking lot of his business, KLD Enterprises, at the intersection of Ridgeley Street and 2nd Avenue just before 5 a.m. Tuesday by a passerby. He had been shot once in the back and was pronounced dead on the scene.

The business, which is small auto detailing shop, was locked and secure, according to Atmore Public Safety Director Glenn Carlee.  Carlee said it appeared that Kendrick had been living in the business or his car. Carlee said Dortch had hoped to open a game room in the building but had not yet acquired the license. He worked full time for Johnson Ford in Atmore.

I’ll say it like an ol’ co worker of mine used to say ” The boy’s gonna rock hard ” and she wasn’t talking about heaven. Makes me sick to my stomach and these are THUGS, nothing more and I pray justice will be served and not one of these ” charge for a youthfull offender and get out in 2 yrs crap ” The evil of this world never amazes me, just makes me so sad.

Just 2 more of Atmores finest that will be charged sentanced and released in a few years. I have allways been an advocate of our personell rights to bear arms. And this is the reason why. Maybe if more law abiding citizens are allowed to carry we can all have a fair chance of defending ourselves and ridding ourselves of scum like this from our cities. When thugs like these realize they are not the only ones that can return fire, maybe they will take a moment of pause before they act. I understand that times are hard and we do what we can to get by, but a criminal act is not they way.
Its time we stand up, learn to protect ourselves, with force if necessary. I personally will defend my family and my property with everything I have in my ability.

Punishment is a teaching tool. It’s always interesting to see those who believe nobody needs to be punished for hurting others.

Look at it this way, if a good person murders people and is not punished for doing so, what is to stop him from doing it again and again? Why is he more important than the people he kills?

    @seo

    BRAVO!!

There are so many punks under 18 in Atmore – they do petty crimes and the judge just slaps them on the wrist. They eventually figure out that they can get away with anything because no one really punishes them. I imagine it’s like this in most towns and cities, though.

Atlanta,,,,are you serious????? That young man MURDERED A MAN IN COLD BLOOD FOR ABSOLUTELY NO REASON! He was out STEALING AND CAUSING DAMAGE TO PEOPLES PROPERTY . He was ILLEGALLY carrying a LOADED GUN. He chose to HUMILIATE an INNOCENT HARD WORKING TAXPAYING LAW ABIDING MAN by making him take off his clothes and then SHOT HIM IN THE BACK IN COLD BLOOD. Im sure his family didnt raise him this way…Im sure they are or at least should be ashamed of what all he has done. This doesnt mean they dont love him, it means that they have A SENSE OF COMMON DECENCY AND RESPONSIBLITY. These men should have been WORKING AT A JOB or at HOME in bed getting sleep so they could get up to GO TO A JOB in the morning……not out roaming the freaking streets, breaking in to cars and STEALING from innocent people, AND THEN MURDERING!!!! Just as ANYONE who commits a crime, they should be held accountable and take responsiblity…NOT have people come up with RIDICULOUS, INSULTING, IGNORANT EXCUSES FOR MURDERING A TOTALLY INNOCENT MAN!

GREAT JOB and THANK U to the Atmore Police Department! In less than 48 hours, they had this horrible, senseless murder solved and the heartless thugs in custody. Mr. Dortch was a very kind, professional and courteous man from what i knew of him. He was simply in his own car, on his own property minding his own business when these cold blooded MURDERERS took this innocent man’s life. For shame, of which they probably have none and will most likely whine and cry to get off. BULL! You do the crime, you do the time. The APD has done a DARN good job…now if the courts and judge will do THEIRS!

D’Anthony Dailey is not a thug or a bad person he just made some bad choices but he is not thug or young punk… I know his family personally and that is not how he was raised. Life people make bad and good choices but we have to learn from them not to be punished and crucified. KEEP YOUR HEAD UP D’ANTHONY AND TO THE FAMILY WHO LOST THEIR LOVED ONE MAY GOD BE WITH YOU

“Oh, my goodness!!! Say it ain’t so……………

It ain’t so. It might well take longer than that to go to trial and the sentence might run several more years if convicted. In fact, while the Supreme Court ruled that age must be considered as a factor in sentencing, the main thing is that it can’t be considered life in prison for a minor. 30 years isn’t life…..

These young punks need to die themselves, instead of us taxpayers paying for them to live in a prison. Im sorry for there familes as well as Kendricks family. But as a taxpayer, i would rather see them hang than for my tax dollars keep them alive.

Im so glad that they were able to find out who the shooter was… That boy has disappointed his family and what a shame to his poor momma. I couldn’t imagine the thought of raising a boy to only find out he has the heart of the devil! It was pure evil what those boys did! Kendrick didn’t do ANYTHING to be killed in cold blood. RIP Kendrick and may god be with his family and his fiance… Please post funeral info so we can send flowers… *ps I hope the DA tries him as an adult and he receives and adult sentence (death) eye for an eye! Don’t waste our tax money on him please*

I knew Kendrick, and he was an honest hard working man with a lot of ideas about things that would make Atmore a better place to live.. This is a great loss to his family, and to the community.. My prayers are with his family and friends..

  18. Ruby White on June 29th, 2012 8:18 am

They need to be fried. It’s ashame people can’t leave honest working prople alone. Such chickens to shoot an innocent man that was trying to make an honest living in the back..They need a good butt kicking before fried!!

  19. David Huie Green on June 29th, 2012 8:15 am

At least the 16 year old can be comforted that even if convicted, he will not get the death penalty or life in prison. With any luck he’ll be back to robbing and killing in time to do it again before he turns 18.

While the judge, in most cases, has the power to decide if the defendant should be considered for a Youthful Offender status after “investigating” the defendants record and other involved decisions of that nature… and the rights awarded under the status are similar to some rights awarded under the Second Amendment.. the Youthful Offender Act is NOT a right protected under the Second Amendment… but yes, do still learn your rights! that is always a good idea!

Sad these young people have made a bad decision that will destroy their future. Even sadder for the victim and the victims family members.

What is wrong with some of the young people today? I think if you look at who is or has raised them you will find the answer. Children are a product of their Parents, as far as what is taught right and wrong and morals go.
Sadly, if you or I disciplined our children as I was growing up, it would be considered child abuse. And look at the fine kids that are out there now. Not all of them, but some of them. No fear of God, or the lifestyle they choose.

  23. love you Kendrick on June 28th, 2012 11:37 pm

  28. cmw on June 28th, 2012 4:38 pm

Good job to the PD for catching these HOODLUMS!!! Now lets just hope the court systems give THEM what they deserve. THE DEATH PENALTY!!! They both deserve it. No second chances. I’m sure Mr. Dortch would have loved a second chance……..

  29. a friend on June 28th, 2012 3:46 pm

Does anyone know about funeral arrangements or a wake or viewing for Kendrick?

  30. 429SCJ on June 28th, 2012 2:16 pm

Let the process of Justice begin. Jones was the mentor, no mercy as he is just as guilty as Daily.

My prayers and condolences to Mr Dortch’s family and loved ones. Sorry he did not get to realize the fruits of his efforts. The Atmore PD wrapped that up in a hurry.

  31. Joe Rabb on June 28th, 2012 2:09 pm

Senseless!! This had my wife upset for days and she only knew of Kendrick but this was someone’s father, son, brother. The kids these days have no regards for human life or the consequences they face for their actions.

  32. JIM W on June 28th, 2012 1:45 pm

Three families lives upset and ruined over this. This is a stupid act for an attempt to get a little money. Greed! Now if convicted we the taxpayers get to house them the rest of their lives. All three so young what a waste for all concerned!

  33. James Randall on June 28th, 2012 1:24 pm

Any chance that we could get a picture of the deceased? It would be a small tribute to this man instead of having these punk thugs pictured…

  34. Sunshine on June 28th, 2012 11:54 am

I pray to the Lord above that the PD gets everyone evolved in this murder and give them what they deserve!!!! Don’t let them get away with this crime we need to stand up for what we know is right! Taking someone else’s life is a crime punishable by death!!! I personally had a great honor of meeting Kendrick when we sold us our car in April he was a very kind hearted yound man who would not have hurt no one and would have give you the shirt off his back if you were just to have asked for it!!!! R.I.P. Kendrick you and your smile will never be forgotten!!!!

  35. a friend on June 28th, 2012 11:38 am

For a crime like this, all involved need to be charged as an adult. This crime was senseless. Kendrick did not deserve to die like this. What a waste – a good man like Kendrick had to die and these 2 are alive. He wanted to help boys like this.

  36. Dennis HE Wiggins on June 28th, 2012 10:56 am

I am afraid that the DA &/or judge will cave to political pressure – as they have in the past – and either charge him as a juvenile (which means IF convicted he’ll be out on the streets in a couple years) under the Youthful Offender Act or they won’t charge him at all. Remember your Second Amendment right, citizens!

  37. smh on June 28th, 2012 10:42 am
