Man Charged With Shooting Into Cottage Hill Home

June 26, 2012

A Pensacola man is facing several charges after allegedly firing a 9mm round into a Cottage Hill home last weekend.

Jarred Louis  Morgan, 27, was charged with firing a deadly missile into a dwelling, discharging a firearm in a public place, improper exhibition of a firearm, criminal mischief and possession of a firearm with an altered serial number. He was released from the Escambia County Jail on a $14,000 bond.

Deputies responded to a home in the 1800 block of North Highway 95A where multiple people reported hearing gunfire and that a round had struck the side of a house. Deputies found a bullet in the home outside a room where a female and a child were inside during the incident.

Deputies began to canvas a nearby neighborhood on McKenzie Road where a resident told them that a white male he knew only as “Jarred” had been in the backyard firing a 9mm handgun.

From a description provided, deputies were able to name Morgan as their suspect, according to an Escambia County Sheriff’s Office arrest report.

When deputies confronted Morgan at his residence in a trailer park on Ten Mile Road, he admitted to firing the handgun.

“I was just shootin’ stump to try and clear the jam in my gun. My wife bought me the gun so I can protect my family,” Morgan said, according to the arrest report. “I f you give me a cigarette, I will show you where the gun is. I didn’t mean to shoot the house.”

The 9mm gun, a 9mm magazine and a box of ammunition were located at another person’s residence. Deputies discovered that someone had attempted to scratch the serial number off the gun, the report states.

    @JM,

I have been gainfully employed for 30 years of my life, 14 of those in law enforcement. I own 2 pistols and a rifle. I am NOT a criminal. You need to put a filter over your fingers before you click the submit button!

I believe in the right to responsibly bear arms.

It is certainly your right to refuse to own a firearm, even to protect yourself and your family. (people who believe that are considered cowards). Tell ya what, make a sign to hang around your neck and on your back that says”If I am attacked/mugged, please don’t come to my aid”. Also put such signs on your vehicle and your house. We legal firearms owners won’t interfere.

Yup. Cottage Hill was at one time a great community…………until the dirtbags move in!

    REGARDING:
“Everyone is wrong for judging this young man.”

You have judged everyone wrong for judging this person. Not everyone DID judge him, but you have judged everyone.
It will be interesting if you ever see the conflict in your judgment.
It would be interesting if you saw the conflict in your judgment of even one person for the sin of judgmentalism.

“Yes what he did is very stupid”

And then YOU judge him too.

“And who gives people the right to look at someone’s record, and judge them when you are not the judge“

More to the point, who takes away the right to judge whether a person is safe to be around or safe to let their children be around? Commenters aren’t getting ready to personally punish him, but they ARE saying what they think of his actions, just like YOU did.

“ If this young man is in trouble maybe someone should offer ways for him to change his ways ,”

And here you have judged everybody who has been around him, finding them guilty of not trying to help.

You’re probably right, but what crime have we committed?

to “advice”: A rattlesnake doesnt change his ways! True God can work miracles. It would take Divine Intervention for this one cigarette guy.
Did you know that the responsible hunters in the United States of America make up the largest ARMED FORCE in the world and as such we will never be overthrown by force from ANYONE! As long as we have the right to bear arms!

ITS NOT FL. FAULT????? Wake up!!!!!!!!!!

  8. Sandra on June 27th, 2012 7:11 am

@Advice. People’s criminal history is public record. It is there so that we can look up folks and see what caliber human being they are. You can also see if that new neighbor that just moved in is a pedophile or might be cooking meth instead of frying chicken on Sundays. I personally like that we can look these lowlifes up.

Everyone is wrong for judeging this young man. Yes what he did is very stupid and thank goodness that noone was hurt in this incident. And who gives people the@ right to look at someones record, and judge them when you are not the judge, he will have to pay for every wrong he does own his on. I think the say goes we are not suppose to judge ,but let us be judge god is the only one that is the true judge. If this young man is in trouble maybe someone should offer ways for him to change his ways ,

    @JM

You are right I don’t know the “majority” of gun owners; but seeing as how those of us who bought our guns legally and had the foresight to obtain a concealed carry permit for protection/self defense and had to go through a safety course on the responsible use of firearms and situations where deadly force is authorized, I would venture to say that most legal gun owners would step in and help someone else if they had the chance. If you would like for one of us responsible gun owners to forego the responsibility to step in and stop someone from raping your wife, or murdering your child, or stealing your car if we witness it; let me know. Although I obviously can’t speak for the others, I will save my ammunition for someone who might actually appreciate it.

hey “for your 411″ get real!!!! the only people i will pray for are the lady and child who were in the house this guy shot!!! i hope this guy goes to prison!!!

  12. Just Checking on June 26th, 2012 7:21 pm

Check out his long criminal history on court of records Escambia County, FL.This man has NO REGARD for the laws and never will. He needs to be locked away before he has the chance to kill someone by “accident”. Most every gun owner I know have them legally and have a concealed weapons permit to carry as I have,
which means I did have to take a course on guns-but not at the fairgrounds, was
trained by expert how to handle and when to use to protect MYSELF or MY FAMILY

  13. for your 411 on June 26th, 2012 6:47 pm

so very easy for society to judge. the best for all of us to do is pray for this young man, and leave the judgement to our father in heaven. may god bless everyone that was affected by this young mans actions and noone was physically hurt.be sure to pray for his family as well.may god bless

  14. paul on June 26th, 2012 5:06 pm

@jm.. If you had a clue to what it takes to buy a “Legal” gun would know that gun owners are Not criminals..you should educate yourself on the subject before you speak.

  15. mnon on June 26th, 2012 4:11 pm

This guy looks like a real winner and upstanding member of the community.

Glad he understands cigarette exchange protocol they use that in prison, where he should be headed and not out on $14,000 bail.

A woman and small kid in the room? Really? I bet that makes him feel like a big man.

  16. rlgator on June 26th, 2012 4:04 pm

I served my country, vote, have a 4 year degree, never been arrested and JM just classified me as criminal. Thanks……..

@JM. It is my belief that the majority of anti-gun people are idiots.

  18. JM on June 26th, 2012 2:13 pm

    @Someguy
I didn’t realize there was someone out there that KNEW the majority of gun owners?

I don’t believe the majority of gun owners out there would use their
guns to protect the rest of us, but that’s a real nice thought. It is my belief the Majority of gun owners are criminals.

  19. someguy on June 26th, 2012 12:53 pm

“There you go lets more guns out there, good job fla.”

Make guns illegal and the only people who will have them are criminals… You can be against owning guns all you want to, just remember that the majority gun owners would use our piece to protect you from people like this guy if the situation required it.

  20. SpoonChampion on June 26th, 2012 12:41 pm

GO TO THE GUN RANGE, DINGLEBERRY!!!

  21. Darlene on June 26th, 2012 12:19 pm

Why was this guy released on such a low bond? He should have been left in jail at least long enough for the other prisoners to get a good read on those pretty tattoos. Seriously? I find it hard to believe this prince of a guy had no prior police record. And, BTW, who was he shooting at? Surely not the wife who bought him the possibly illegal gun. How ironic would that be. The really scary part is that there was a child in that house. Please, Judge, just lock this loser up. He has no excuse to justify his actions, save the taxpayers the expense of a trial..oops, sorry, I forgot for a moment that he has “rights”. Maybe he should have used his right to remain silent.

The reckless and irresponsible use of a firearm like that, give us responsible gun owners a bad name.

  24. Doug on June 26th, 2012 9:33 am

Wow!!! I just don’t get it. What has happened to our younger generation? There is no way anyone could think these actions equalled a good idea. Mind boggling…

Another cowardly, tattooed, gangbanger-wannabe. Doesn’t have the nerve to confront, so he shoots at the house and runs.

I wonder what he would have told them for two cigarettes?

  32. Ben Thar on June 26th, 2012 7:22 am

Just curious about where his wife bought a gun with the serial number scratched off.

  33. curious on June 26th, 2012 5:34 am

If he was only shootin at stumpto clear his gun and he had it for protection then why was it at someone else house. I believe Having a gun with an altered serial number is a federal charge. Good job getting this thug of street but 14000 is way to low of a bond

  34. Obvious on June 26th, 2012 5:16 am

A guy shoots into a dwelling with a gun that has an altered serial number, and then bargains with police to show them the location of the firearm in exchange for a cigarette. People this dumb deserve to be in jail, and the judge who granted bail should be sitting alongside him on the cold, steel bench!

  35. Old Goldie on June 26th, 2012 3:05 am

What in the world is written on his body? (maybe his name in case he should ever forget) So ugly! He should be charged with attempted manslaughter also.

And Cottage Hill used to be so peaceful!
