Atmore Businessman Murdered, Found Shot In The Back

June 26, 2012

An Atmore man was found shot to death outside his business early Tuesday morning.

Kendrick Lamon Dortch, 38, was discovered dead in the parking lot of his business, KLD Enterprises, at the intersection of Ridgeley Street and 2nd Avenue just before 5 a.m. by a passing motorist. He had been shot once in the back.

The business, which is small auto detailing shop, was locked and secure, according to Atmore Public Safety Director Glenn Carlee.  Carlee said it appeared that Kendrick had been living in the business or his car. Carlee said Dortch had hoped to open a game room in the building but had not yet acquired the license. He worked fulltime for an Atmore car dealership.

Carlee said there are currently no suspects in the shooting.

Anyone with information on the crime is asked to call the Atmore Police Department at (251) 368-9141.

Kendrick was a hard working man always on the phone with customers and even doing the job himself to get it done in time enough for the customers to pick up their new or used truck or car. He told me about his game room he was doing we talked of a game to play when it was ready that won’t happen now.
    Rest in Peace Kendrick.

Kendrick was a great person, he had a huge personality, he probably would have just gave them what they wanted and let them go. I know that GOD will one day bring this back around to this person who killed this wonderful young man. I would have had him picking at me tomorrow at Johnson Ford about the raspberry cakes he liked. He will be missed. Even though you only see people on certain occasions, they always seem to find a place in your life to stand out. My prayers go out to this family.

I feel for the family that has this loss. I feel for the town as well. This man seemed to be trying to do something great for a town that sadly needs a fun, friendly outlet for the people there. Let’s face it, there’s not a lot to do in Atmore unless you drink or gamble. My husband and I had a tint shop in that building about three years ago and we hated to leave but hoped that someone would come along and bring it back to life….how sad that the very man that was trying to had to loose his life. Our prayers are with the family. We are so sorry for this.

As for the person/persons responsible may God have mercy on your soul. I hope that the guilt eats at you every second until they catch you or you can’t stand it any longer and you turn yourself in. I am betting that they have to come turn over the rock you have crawled under to hide, after all, if you’ll shoot a man in the back why would you turn yourself in….that would take being a real person with feelings.

its getting harder and harder to be surprised by murder, roberry, rape, and corruption. its a crying shame, but i can honestly say that a good working man being brought down by a bullet to the back, now that surprised me. well a little. wheres you honor people. didnt wanna see your guilt in his eyes, or chance that you are so weak he might wouldve over powered you, given a fair chance? pray, my friend, cause your days of happy luxury are numbered.

“I met Kendrick last year when buying my car. Super nice guy…straight shooter.”

Probably not the best choice of words given the circumstances. But we know what you mean.

And how is this murder related to the “Stand Your Ground” Clause???

  9. just me on June 27th, 2012 7:47 am

It’s cowards like this that are fighting the “Stand Your Ground Laws”. Don’t let them win. I’d like to see someone stand their ground against this low life.

Hope this is not another case of black on black cold case, closed case. Bring closure to at least one family and put this coward of a person away. People in this town are getting tired of unsolved crimes. Step up A.P.D.

I worked with KD for a couple of years and he and I often talked about ways to “make it” in this town. One thing we never thought about was some good for nothing coward shooting one of us in the back! Whoever you are, you must be some kind of a sick individual , the kind that slips around at night and cuts tires or shoots out windows when nobody is around to hold you accountable for your actions! A typical Coward! Be a man for once, do the right thing and go turn your pitiful self in. Do us all a favor and remove yourself from society….you make me sick!

Kendrick was a kind man! He trying to bring a place to gather, hangout shoot a game of pool and have fun. But apparently someone took his life for something STUPID. (If it was over a woman thats just sorry and so is she… If it was over drugs, the shooter was prob a crack head WASTE of life… If over money take his bass to court or give him a roughing up…) But he didn’t do ANYTHING worth taking his life. I’m willing to say this case WON’T get the justice it deserves and it will all be swept under the rug. *The killer is a coward! Who shoots someone in the back? Apparently someone who can’t hold his own! RIP KENDRICK PRAYING FOR YOUR FAMILY!

It`s pretty bad when a person is trying to make a living and is brought down this way. Not surprised with the way things are these days. I hope they find the killer(s) soon.

Kendrick didn’t deserve this !! It takes a cold hearted coward (to call you nice) to take another human’s life.

Unbelievable, thats the old Hardy/Kerley Garage building. My Grandmother lived not far from there.

I guess you are safe nowhere these days. So much for going to Oak Hill without a sidearm, they’d shoot you dead and rob you at the family plot.

They will be caught and sent to Hollman or the devil.
