One Seriously Injured In Highway 29 Crash (With Photo Gallery)
June 24, 2012
One person was seriously injured in a crash Sunday afternoon on Highway 29 south of Cox Road.
John David Watters was northbound on Highway 29 when his Mercedes C280 rear-ended a flatbed wrecker that was out of the northbound travel lane on the paved shoulder of Highway 29 to tow a broken down vehicle.
The collision completely sheared off the passenger side of the car. Watters was transported to a Sacred Heart Hospital in serious condition. There were no passengers in the car.
The wrecker driver, 68-year old James Allen Bodiford of Cantonment, and the persons with the broken down car were not injured.
Watters was charged with careless driving, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Just to provide an update on John’s condition. John is my son and he is making substantial progress, scheduled for his first surgery later today. Thank all of you for your kind words and thoughts and prayers. Certainly God had a hand of protection around John and obviously has a plan for him yet to do. I also would like to personally thank all those who stopped to assist and render care, I along with my family are truly indebted to each of you for the deeds you did. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts and may God bestow a blessing on each and everyone of you. I understand the driver of the tow truck suffered some type of injury and I hope each one of you will join me in remembering and praying for him. Again, thank you from the bottom of my heart for all your thoughts and prayers and continue to pray for both John and the driver of the tow truck.

Has anybody wondered about the truck driver is he ok. If he had been standing at the controls off the truck it would have cut him in half. Maybe someone should ask how he is doing.
Hope u r ok John
My friend Leni was the first one to the car she seen the whole wreck, Her and the ladies from the broke down car was there with him until firefighters got there. So many people just drive by these wrecks and never stop to help but she did. She held pressure to the gash on his head and talked to the guy and tried to keep him calm. she said she never seen the passenger side of the car until afterwards and all she could think was thank God no one else was in the car with him. I pray for him and his family

Thank you all for the outpour of prayer and support for John and our family. Please continue to do so throughout this difficult and scary time.
SHO-NUFF if you look at the wheelift on the back of the truck it is about the same height as a DOT bar on the back of a semi and sticks out past the rear edge of the bed doing the same thing they are designed to do. I believe the angle of impact is what made the damage so severe as it was not a straight rear hit but at an angle.
If you look at the back of the wrecker, you will see the ramp is built with a knife edge end. Required so it can lay flat on the pavement to load disabled vehicles. Not a good object to run into. Semi trailers used to cut the top off Cars years ago due to the ride height and rear end collisions. A bumper, or crash bar was mandated for semi trailers, but not practical for this application. Hope the driver recovers well.
Our family will certainly be praying for John and his family!
