No Serious Injuries In Hwy 29 Crash Near Hwy 97
May 30, 2012
One person was injured in a two vehicle crash on Highway 29 near Highway 97 Wednesday afternoon.
The driver of small station wagon turned from northbound Highway 29 across the southbound lanes attempting to enter the Tom Thumb parking lot but instead pulled into the path of a Ford Mustang. The first driver said the view of the Mustang was blocked by a large truck in the 12:56 p.m. accident.
The 52-year old female driver of the Mustang was transported by Escambia County EMS to Sacred Heart Hospital in Pensacola in good condition. There were no other injures.
The accident is under investigation by the Florida Highway Patrol. Escambia Fire Rescue Engine 1819 from Molino also responded to the crash.

I have lived off 97 for over 15 yrs never had a problem the problem is the drivers we don’t need a red light at that intersection it will not solve anything people just need to pay attention and slow down
Michelle and C.W I agree with you both. Well said. I think that unless your south bound on 29 you should enter the Tom Thumb from Crabtree church. It seems that most of these accidents happen from people entering the T.T. from the northbound direction or leaving it in the northbound direction.
Jerry~ since I live on 97 I can say a TON of the big rigs come this way but knowing a few of the drivers most of them will tell you its very difficult and dangerous (because of accidents like this) for them to come in off 29 to 97. Thats why they jump on at the top of 95a. Sure some are driving too fast but most are just trying to avoid an accident. Accidents slow them down, take away loads and cause them to lose money. Some are clearly not safe but most are just trying to pay the bills.
REGARDING:
“Don’t make unnecessary comments if you don’t know the whole story. The Mustang was blocked from view of the other driver by a logging truck.”
If you can’t see, please consider not proceeding.
What’s done is done, but it doesn’t have to continue to be done.
It’s an avoidable incident, not an unavoidable accident.
Don’t go if you don’t know.
David for saving lives, body parts and paint jobs
Many I got a speeding ticket . Because of this I had to take a safety driving course, then when I became a truck driver I went to school and also there we learned driver saftey. Here is my point I learned years ago 1. never when following a big truck assume anything like if truck goes thru intersection don’t assume the light is green because it made it through. 2 Never turn in any direction when following to close a big truck because you field of sight is blocked from truck. I wish every person who obtained a drivers license had to take safety courses b4 hand maybe some not all but some would learn all the things to look for as I did. It has really helped me and thank God I have never had a wreck or caused one. Even when I drove an 18 wheel truck in the 48 + Canada. Still to this day I remember and use the things I learned in them course and taught them to my kids too.
To All comments.
everyone travels these roads and I live on 97.
I have to pull to shoulder to keep from getting hit by
someone when I turn into my drive.
I had a log truck one day when I was turning in going south
almost hit me and the car behind me.
THE DRIVE WAS GOING WAY TO FAST.
my turn signal was on way before I got to my turn the car behind me had no problem,
but the log truck did.
SLOW DOWN PEOPLE.
People think the intersection isn’t that bad. Wait until they get hit or hit someone there or someone they love gets hit and hurt. Then the intersection will become dangerous. We need a traffic light to expedite turns, crossings, and slow traffic down.
CONSIDERING:
“He stated “if a red light there even saved one life it would be money well spent.” ”
So if it CAUSED even one death, it wouldn’t matter if the traffic light were free?
I don’t know that it would and it might well save many lives if installed but sometimes the effect is opposite of what was intended. I’ve seen people race through red lights several seconds after the light changed at 95A and Nine Mile Road. They seemed to think the light meant nothing unless law enforcement dwelt there, whereas others thought they could go when the light turned green and two vehicles wound up occupying the same bloody space.
David for better living
A red light would not work at this intersection because those of us who live on Crabtree Church Rd. already have a hard enough time getting out during the morning school rush and the afternoon. A red light would just make it worse.
Dont make unnecassary comments if you dont know the whole story. The mustang was blocked from view of the other driver by a logging truck. Its not a case of someone not paying attention. Accidents happen. The person in the suzuki is a very careful driver. It just happens that this time there was an accident. And theres a reason its called an accident.
people are just in to big of a hurry , stop an think of what your doing….
{Response to Kay Campbell}
Dear Kay, I too live on the stretch of 95A the gentleman is complaining about. I too feel your drivers need to use the 97 to 95a route. This route has been engineered by FDOT to accomodate commercial vehices. In your comment you failed to mention that FDOT has placed signs advising “NO TRUCKS” at the North end of 95a from U.S. 29 for southbound vehicles and at the Y at 97 and 95a for northbound vehicles. The reason… the road exit to U.S. 29 is not egineered to accomodate commercial vehicles. Therefore your companies trucks are violating state law. I have spoken with several people that live in this area. The major gripe I hear is the speed of the vehicles travelling this section. I and my wife have both had close calls with your trucks while attempting to enter our driveway. I have notified the Florida OMCC as well as the Escambia County SO. As far as your comment about the other route being unsafe, is absurd. Lets all slow down and obey the law.

That happens a lot. People assume if they can’t see anything, there must be nothing to see.
David for imagination and foresight
My dad said it best the other day while discussing a red light at this intersection. We’ve both lived in this area all our lives, and he having worked with the volunteer fire dept. and witnessed many accidents at this intersection.
He stated “if a red light there even saved one life it would be money well spent.”
Sure accidents happen at red lights as well, but the risk goes down substantially if a red light were there and if it even saved one life afterwards, I would have to agree it would be money well worth it.
I don’t know about everyone else, but I always choose gas stations that are on the right side of the road, easy in and easy out. Why someone would pass those other stations and then cross traffic turning left into Tom Thumb is beyond me.
1) If going in a straight line. YOU have the right of way
2) If you are in the intersection and wanting to say turn left. Make sure the oncoming lane is CLEAR and then go.
3) If you are at a stop sign “STOP”!! If going straight or turning follow point 1&2 only when CLEAR then you may go.
4) If you are coming out of say Tom Thumb ( or any driveway) You WAIT until all 3 points (in any configuration) are CLEAR . Then you can go.
We’ve all read the the same book before we all got our licences to drive. So how come so many accidents?
Thank you “concerned driver”. A red light isn’t needed (people will only run it anyway so that won’t work) better drivers is what is needed.
When are they going to put a traffic light up there? There are so many accidents at this intersection.
>>Does anybody know what the changes will be to the intersection when DOT is finished?

Does anybody know what the changes will be to the intersection when DOT is finished? Are they eliminating the turn into back of the Tom Thumb or what are they doing that will help the intersection be safer?
Part of the problem is people turning into the Tom Thumb from 29. Its dangerous, they need to make a entrance off 97 or something. People also disregard the no left turn leaving the Tom Thumb and cause accidents. I’ve seen local and state police do this.
I cross this intersection many times while working. There needs to be a redlight put here. It is very dangerous. I came across this accident today and it seemed to me as if someone was going pretty fast. The whole bumper was off the vehicle. It is a very dangerous intersection in my opinion especially if you are crossing all four lanes like I do.
I had a man call me yesterday and complain because my trucks were going by his house on North 95A. He wanted me to tell my drivers to turn off of Hwy 29 onto Hwy.97 then to 95A…..he had rather my drivers be unsafe than to have trucks pass his house. Hwy 29 & Hwy 97 intersection is dangerous enough without a bunch of trucks blocking the view trying to turn! Hope all involved in this accident have a speedy recovery!!
This intersection is not complicated. I have been through it hundreds of times and never a problem. The only way to get into a wreck there is if you are not paying attention. Do not go across the lanes unless you are sure no one is coming. Being in a hurry will only get you there slower. People really need to start paying more attention while driving..
