McDavid Post Office Targeted For Service Reduction

May 11, 2012

The McDavid Post Office will see cutbacks if the U.S. Postal Service moves forward with a new strategy that is designed to keep the nation’s smallest post offices open with reduced services.

The plan would keep the McDavid Post Office open, but with retail window hours reduced from eight to six hours per day. Access to the retail lobby and to post office boxes would remain unchanged, and the McDavid zip code and community identity would be retained.

“We’ve listened to our customers in rural America and we’ve heard them loud and clear – they want to keep their Post Office open. We believe today’s announcement will serve our customers’ needs and allow us to achieve real savings to help the Postal Service return to long-term financial stability,” said Postmaster General and CEO Patrick R. Donahoe.

The new reduced hours would be implemented over a two-year, multi-phased approach and would not be completed until September 2014 at thousands of post offices across the nation. Once implementation is completed, the Postal Service estimates savings of a half billion dollars annually.

The reduced operating hour strategy replaces a plan announced last year to close 3,700 post offices nationwide.

No changes will occur until after a community meeting is held to review options in greater detail.  No date for the meeting has been set for McDavid; residents will be notified by mail of the date, time and location of the meeting.

The McDavid Post Office is the only North Escambia area post office on the list of thousands across the country slated for a reduction in window hours. The plan does not include the Walnut Hill Post Office, which is in the McDavid 32568 zip code and operated under contract by Escambia River Electric Cooperative.

    REGARDING:
“I just wish the post office would get a different zip code for either Walnut Hill or McDavid.”

Walnut Hill is using McDavid’s zip code.

    David for sharing

I just wish the post office would get a different zip code for either Walnut Hill or McDavid..Every time I would try to buy something online or ented my address it would always come up as a mistake .I lived in McDavid but was often forced to make changes since the system shows that zip code as Walnut Hill.

Well, the office is 7:45 am to 3:45 pm M-F and 745 to 945 on Sat. My big complaint is that no one knows that the post office is there. The sign on the road is so small you really have to look for it and another thing is if they would clan the trees from the side of us people might actually know that we do exist. Help us keep our office going…….

The McDavid Post office is open at 7:45 AM to 3:45 PM Mon – FRI and 7:45 AM to 9:45 AM on Saturdays. I don’t mind the hours as I take responsibility for my own actions and plan ahead. There are plenty of PO Boxes available. Get yours now before they are gone. I love it because I can get my mail when ever I want, as the Lobby is open 24 hours.

A cut in the hours won’t really be significant impact in the McDavid post office window operation, which keeps some of the shortest and strangest window hours that I’ve ever seen – anywhere. The current unusual times that the window is open often forces those of us who work regular days to use a different post office or make bill payments on line because who can get to the post office by 3:30 in the afternoon? At least the Walnut Hill office operates more like a business because EREC runs it, and maybe the postal service can learn a lesson here.
