Man, Grandkids Injured In Scooter Crash

April 30, 2012

A man and his two grandchildren were listed in critical condition following a motorized scooter accident about five miles north of Flomaton Sunday afternoon.

Authorities said a 54-year old man was traveling on Old Foshee Road with two children ages four and six. He reportedly lost control, ran off the road and flipped the vehicle. The two children were reportedly ejected and hit a concrete bridge. None of the three were wearing helmets.

The six year old was airlifted by LifeFlight to Sacred Heart Hospital in Pensacola . The man and a four-year old were transported by ambulance to Sacred Heart. All three were classified as “trauma alerts” due to possible head injuries.

The accident is under investigation by Alabama State Troopers. Further details, including the names of the victims, have not yet been released.

Editor’s note: Authorities originally described the vehicle driven by the man as a “motorcycle”; however, on Monday, authorities said it was type of motorized scooter.

I no this family personally and they are all very good people. And the grandfather made a bad call who hasnt no one is perfect parents or grandparents. i do know for a fact the grandfather would never on purpose hurt any of his family. i went to see the family and the injuried three at the hospital and they were all suffering. But we need to be there for this family and give our prayers and support. God will take care of all this. It is easy to sit here and judge this situation but think of something you made a bad decision on. My thoughts and prayers go out to all the family and i love these boys they are so precious. God was watching over all of them.

This was my brother and his 2 grandchildren and I would like to take a second to say Thank you all for the PRAYERS and everything else that has been done for them.As for putting the kids in danger yes it was stupid I know it was the first time anything like that happen and know it will be the last time with this family,I truely believe everything happens for a reason and only god know why my brother has 4 kids and 4 grandkids and twins on the way he loves each and everyone of them the same and would do what ever he could for them,He would never hurt any of them on purpose ,the boys wanted to ride and he wanted to please,I know for a fact there has been 1 helmet found thank god,My family has learned from this accident, sometimes we just get carried away with the moment when it comes to kids, our lives are so fast moving these days that sometimes we just dont think.I pray that when the whole family is back together the way it should be that they just let God take over, This could have happen to any of us.Again Thanks for all the prayers Just had to vent a little bit, prayers to all

    REGARDING:
” it could have happened to anyone”

True. Anyone who did those actions could experience those results. Therefore, this might be a good time to remind all other people not to do such things. The benefit isn’t worth the potential cost. It’s too late for them not to be hurt but others might be saved if warned and if they use forethought.

That way, this particular painful result will not happen to any who don’t ride a motorized scooter with two unprotected children near concrete or other hard objects.

We can pray for the recovery of these children and that others not suffer the same way. Yes?

” and as far as him being charged for it.. I believe that he has been punished enough with the fact that he could have lost his grandbabies”

Please forgive their anger. They aren’t thinking of the pain of the adult but rather the pain of the children. I pray they all recover.

David for caution with the lives of others

No finger pointing or second guessing needed. That accomplishes NOTHING at this point. This family needs prayers right now, NOT accusations. I don’t even know these people, but the entire family are in my prayers tonight.

This is my family, my brother-in-law and nephews. First I want to say thanks JDM and all the others who helped my family, we are so thankful for what you did. We know things could have been alot worse but God saved them all for a reson. To those posting negative comments, I have to say I would probably do the same if the shoe was on the other foot but you need to consider the family. Yes my brother in law made a mistake and he well knows it, and trust me he is punishing him self. He has not got to see the babies but he did see pictures of them and it broke his heart, he knows he did wrong. But please keep your negative thoughts to your self and pray for the entire family. The 6 year old is being so brave, he sitll hasn’t cried, he spent four hours in surgery Sunday night and has another one scheduled for tomorrow. The four year old is doing the best he can to be strong, he is doing good, he has some bad road rash but God surely had his hand on that baby, he had a rough night Sunday but thank God he is better. Grandpa is the same, scheduled for another CT this morning to check the bleeding, we are praying it stops on it’s own. My pastor came and prayed for all three yesterday as well as the entire family and that made us all feel better, we have been getting alot of calls and text and so forth from alot of people, even people we don’t know, and to all of you we say thanks and God Bless. Please continue to pray, our family need it, we have a long road ahead of us. As I close I say this, remember noone is perfect but Christ, we all make mistakes.

I remember standing next to my Dad in the front seat of his 58 Chevy Bel Air. I would
have a BIG RC cola in one hand and a Zero candy bar in the other and a windsheild
and metal dash in front of me.

I am not even sure if NASCAR had safety belts back then, I remember no mention of
safety equipment in car ads. I guess we just were oblivious to safety and just
enjoying being togather. Thankfully the Lord protected us fthrough our period of
    ignorance.

Just another example of the most valuable lessons we learn in life are often the hardest with far reaching consequences.

  13. Angie on April 30th, 2012 11:10 pm

Thanks Molino Mom you are so right. Visited them today. All are in ICU. Grandpa has bleeding in the head but he wants to see his grandbabies. He loves them but like us all we don’t think or believe this can happen to us. The oldest little boy has to have another surgery Wednesday on his leg. Both are doing the best under all conditions. The family is holding strong and needing lots of prayers.

  14. JDM on April 30th, 2012 9:22 pm

Really bad scene all three of these victims need our pray and support as well as the mother and grandmother. 6 yr. old kept asking for nana but I didn’t know where to find at the moment. He is one BRAVE little guy no tears not even when we had to move to the back board. I want to shake his hand when he gets home. Accidents happen that’s is why we have good people like Century EMS, Friendship VFD, Flomaton FD, Pineveiw VFD and LifeFlight Baptist. Everyone recognizes the obvious mistake made, let’s focus our concern on prayer to God on their behalf. And no I’m not part of their family but I feel their pain and have no wish to add to it.

  15. AshleyB on April 30th, 2012 7:18 pm

These are the cutest babies. It hurts to know this happen to them, if I was able I’d do anything to help them. I pray that they will be okay. God will be there for them no matter what, everyone needs to keep praying. They are damage for life, they will never be the same, but in God and my eyes they will look nor be
any different. Thank the lord that there okay. I love these kids. I know them personally and there the sweetest ones I’ve met yet. I just think god that they are okay. And lets also pray it will stay that way.

  16. Panhandlepix on April 30th, 2012 5:47 pm

Why would any responsible grandparent put one much less two children on any type of two wheeler without all necessary safety equipment. Why would responsible parents allow this to happen?

  17. mary on April 30th, 2012 4:06 pm

All I have to say is……How dare you not put helmets on YOUR GRANDKIDS(any kids for that matter) You are old enough to make that decision as I have done many times in the past! I am VERY glad no1 was seriously hurt!!!!!!!!!!

  18. MOLINO MOM on April 30th, 2012 3:30 pm

    To the family members,
Even though some on here may seem to be “bashing” the grandfather for his carelessness, I am sure no one will be harder on him, than himself. I am very pleased to hear they will all be alright. Thank God for that! This could have been alot worse. I know if the tables were turned and it was my father he would be devastated over the outcome of this, hurting his grandchildren-even though it wasn’t intentional. I’m sure he adores them! If nothing else good comes of this, maybe at least one person who has done this or considered it, will now NEVER let this thought ever enter their mind again without taking ALL safety measures. We must protect our babies at all times. As we have learned, one innocent thought and action could have cost all three of them their lives. It is a lesson for us ALL, not just him. I pray for all of your family.
This was an unfortunate accident, yeah it may have been avoided with helmets but who knows. Point is this grandfather is probably devastated beyond words. I’m sure he is beating himself up enough. I think we, as neighbors, can cut him some slack and just thank god for taking care of them all.
I reacted like everyone else on here when I first heard of this. I was furious at him for having those babies on the scooter let alone no helmets on their little heads. But then I started to think about what I would feel like if something so traumatic had happened to me or my family. We all agree he made a terrible judgment call, but lets show a little compassion here too now that we know they are ALL going to be alright.
Good luck to your family, continuing to pray for them all!

    Very…Very…. Very STUPID.

  20. susan on April 30th, 2012 2:03 pm

this is our family members too. thankfully they all are going to be okay. please continue to pray for them in the weeks ahead. i assure you the entire family is taking note and learning from this incident. we do understand the publics frustration and anger tho difficult to read. there have been so many people dying or being seriously hurt , esp. lately, that we can see why people are exercising thier right to vent. just remember that we need prayers too. if anything good can come from this hard time, it will be that noone else has to go thru this. thank you for your prayers and concern.

We have lots of NE readers here…… Jh, will you please be so kind to just keep us informed on their progress? Often times I see situations like this and wonder whatever happened in the end. Hope everyone will be alright.

  23. jh on April 30th, 2012 10:45 am

This is my uncle and cousins, and I am not saying that riding around with out helmets is okay because it is not, but all three of them are in ICU so if you would please keep your negative comments to yourself because quite frankly at this time we do not need them. But Thanks to those that are truly praying and please keep them coming.

  24. 429SCJ on April 30th, 2012 9:35 am

My prayers are with these three. I hope they are able to recover and stay together as
    a family.

  25. se on April 30th, 2012 9:29 am

jeeperman, this was no “put putting” around. Noone should EVER have more than one person on any kind of scooter or atv, certainly not without helmets and never on roadways. the kind of injuries here are not produced by “put putting” around the yard. yes pray for the family. they are very fortunate that it appears all will be ok. some people want to get mad because folks dont want to be politically correct and just sugar coat the situtation….BUT let this is the time that a lesson can be learned!!!! People need to WAKE UP!!!! No excuse.

  26. jeeperman on April 30th, 2012 9:13 am

I am positive Grandpa was just going to give his grandkids a putt-putt ride.
Unfortunately something went wrong somewhere and an accident happened.
A preventable one, but still a tradgedy no less.
I am sure Grandpa would preffer that he alone could absorb all of the injuries from his grandkids.

  27. W on April 30th, 2012 9:06 am

Don’t know about Alabama, but in FL helmets are not required ONLY if you are over 21 & have full coverage ins. !!

  28. Lacy on April 30th, 2012 7:53 am

This is so sad. My heart and prayers are with the family. And yes, why, was these babies on a motorcycle with no helmets? I can understand if grandpa just wanted to take the grandbabies on a lil ride but, one at a time and with a helmet on. Another tragedy that probably could of been avoided if the adult would of just took 2 seconds to think first.

  29. T on April 30th, 2012 6:36 am

    Absolutely PRAYING for them…..and wondering……….

WHY DID THIS MAN HAVE 2 (TWO) CHILDREN ON A MOTORCYCLE WITH NOOO HELMETS On thier heads?
    WHAT was he thinking?
I see stupid people everyday wearing NO helmet going down the highway, but they are adults and make that decision, BUT when you put 2 small children on a motorcycle WITH NO HELMETS, you are asking for trouble.
I’m guessing this guy will have charges filed on him?
and I’m sure this guy meant no harm whatsoever! BUT, it is clear he did NOT think before putting these kids on that motorcyccle.
Praying for all 3 to recover in Jesus’ name….Amen

  30. Mother of 2 on April 30th, 2012 5:46 am

This is so scary and sad. My 2 little ones ages 9 and 5 never do anything without a helmet. I am praying strong and hard that all 3 will be ok and make a speedy recovery! May God place his healing hands on the three of them! I hope that your family will get well soon

  31. Molino-Anon on April 30th, 2012 4:23 am

    Praying for the family.

With that said, not putting a helmet on your children while riding a motorcycle is irresponsible! YOU the adult motorcyclist have a choice, those children do not! Be safe and put a helmet on the kids! It is news like this that shines a bad light on helmet laws with motorcycles.

  32. Dbell on April 30th, 2012 1:57 am

Have been praying since I heard the sirens this afternoon, then LifeFlight coming over a short time later. Didn’t know what had happened until tonight, but was horrified when I found out. There are a lot of people praying and we’ll continue to do so. I pray that all three will recover with no lasting effects from their injuries.
