Alabama Man Charged With Abusing Horses

April 25, 2012

An Escambia County, Ala., man has been charged in connection with starving five horses.

The Humane Society of Escambia County (Ala.) seized the horses last weekend. The four mares and a stallion were hundreds of pounds underweight and being kept in a yard filled with dangerous debris, according to Renee Jones, director of the humane society.

“There was no grass at all and no water on the property. A generous neighbor ran a garden hose from her yard daily and filled containers for the horses,” Jones said. She said the owner had been warned numerous times to improve living conditions for the horses, but their conditions continued to deteriorate.

Lavon William Fuqua of East Brewton was booked into the Escambia County (Ala.) Detention Center in Brewton on five counts of animal cruelty.

Why did it take so long for he horses to be rescued? Thanks to the neighbor who gave them water.

So he had the money to bail himself out but not to care for the poor horses! Put him in a barbed wire enclosure in the rain with no shelter or food/water for a few weeks before he goes to jail! I will never understand why people will do such bad things to animals!

This needs to stop happening…there are too many incidents of animal abuse…not just horses but other animals too. If you don’t want them chances are someone does…post a sgn, call a rescue group, even check with your church for help finding homes for these animals. And if you know someone is mistreating animals…CALL the Humane Society!
As for those who mistreat animals, I hope there is a special place in Hell for them, since a lot of times they get off too easily.

Boy I see lots of blame placed on other people and not the owner. Its called personal responsibility do not blame anyone but the owner for not maintaining thier animals.

Why did it take so long to get help for these animals? This is disgusting.
A million thanks to the lady who kept them from dying of thirst.

Now can we possibly get this abuser charged with FELONIES instead of misdemeanors?

I have traveled thru there for the past couple years and saw those horses. I wondered why nothing was done about them and their living conditions. All the junk in the yard alone was a hazard, not to mention being starved. Some people don’t need animals…….or kids for that matter. Glad they were rescued! Thankful Ms. Jones is behind the rescue…….and the punishment to the owner!!

Those horses have been there for more than a year. I had also called the Humane Society several months ago. I am glad to see that they were rescued.

Mrs. Jones is absolutely wonderful running the humane’s society! She is against euthanizing and finds homes for the beloved animals. You should stop by her shelter sometime and see how she runs it. The county is blessed to have her! I feel as though she is not appreciated enough. Mrs. Jones, we think you’re fabulous!

How could this have gone on long enough for those animals to be in this shape this does not happen overnight people had to have known!!!!! Disgusting ! I know it’s hard today financially for a lot of people to maintain anything but there is no excuse for it getting to this point . I am sure someone saw this why did you not report it?? Where did these animals go there are people who can help please dont euthanize them
