Spelling Counts: Can You Spot What’s Wrong With This Sign?
March 1, 2012
The sign over the entrance at the county-owned Byrneville Community Center was recently repainted — with a spelling error. Can you spot what’s wrong with the sign in these photos?

Okay…enough now…we know how to spell Byrneville and yes we are known by description as a small community but we are really the hub for many activities and events….so we say …..Byrneville is as big as Texas with a heart the size of the moon…..just ask anyone that lives here….they will tell you….our thanks to community services for correcting the mistake.
>>what is byrneville
It’s a community just a few miles west of Century on and north/south of Highway 4. Home of Byrneville Elementary. They also have a red light.
what is byrneville
IS IT NOT BURNVILLE?
REGARDING:
“You can buy a “resturant” (Old Willie’s in Brewton). It’s for sale.”
A place in Century identified itself as a resturant and restaurant on two outside signs, same side of the building. They finally fixed the problem by renaming it a cafe

Viewer. Probably the same one who spelled the name for
Schaag Road on the old highway in Molino. Every
now and then the spelling changes. Wonder what it is today?
TO THINKER………………. LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! that was a good one!
Now class, let’s ALL spell it together…B-Y-R-N-E-V-I-L-L-E ! Very good! I once passed a brand new church sign hich read “CALVERY DELIVERANCE” Reckion they needed to brush up on the B-I-B-L-E?! LOL!!!
Should be a U instead of a Y,right?________WHAT?
Remember the sign at the state line a few years ago that welcome people to Flroida
REGARDING:
“Just like Godwin Cemetery Road sign used to say Godwin CEMETARY Road. I think it still does.”
Cemetary is an unfavored spelling of cemetery; well, scholars don’t favor it, but others surely do like it. Morgan Cemetary Road south of Pine Barren Bridge on US 29 is an example. I suspect whoever makes the county’s signs favors the alternate spelling.
There’s also a church in Century whose sign declares it a “Tempal”. To each his own.
Out of curiosity, I tried to look up the word but Google kept correcting to cemetery, which is good, Google knows what we mean whether we do or not. (I thought the machines were supposed to have already taken over by now, not just try to help us with our spelling.)
Anyhow, from: http://www.thefreedictionary.com/cemetery we have the background information as to how words changed over the centuries.
“[Middle English cimiterie, from Old French cimitiere, from Medieval Latin cimitrium, from Late Latin coemtrium, from Greek koimtrion, from koimn, to put to sleep; see kei-1 in Indo-European roots.]”
So the meaning seems to be a place of sleep. I’d never thought to look it up before. Jesus said, “She sleepeth.” (“And all wept, and bewailed her: but he said, Weep not; she is not dead, but sleepeth.” Luke 8:52 The idea being it is just temporary for those who trust in Him.)
David thinking there’s much in a word
even if not standard spelling
(and amused at the “vile” comment
even though I like the place)
You can buy a “resturant” (Old Willie’s in Brewton). It’s for sale.
This is what happens when you live in a laid-back sleepy area like this where only 50% of children graduate from high school. You pays you money and you takes you choice.
hookded on fonix didnt worked for thim lol
Seems the article caught someone’s attention as there is someone at the center this early AM correcting the error!
I’d say according to the sign that Byrneville is most probably a vile place!
Where the “L” did it go?
Your tax dollars at work!
we have a winner, citizen
They can spell what it is, just not where it is.:-)
Just like Godwin Cemetery Road sign used to say Godwin CEMETARY Road. I think it still does.
Needs another L in Byrneville
