New Restaurant Coming To Atmore

March 27, 2012

Construction will soon begin on a new restaurant in Atmore.

Waffle House will open later this year at the Rivercane development at I-65 and Highway 21. It will join  McDonald’s, Hardee’s, Holiday Inn Express and Hampton Inn in the city’s 740 acre development adjacent to the Wind Creek Casino.

The Waffle House was announced at a Monday afternoon meeting of the Atmore City Council.

I knew of this coming about a year ago and also the possibility of one coming to Interstate in Flomaton also somewhere in near future. You’re right its hard to classify. Not really a restaurant but not really fast food. But they do serve their purpose and they do a pretty good job at what they do. They are a sound company and will employee sevaral people. Good place for locals to eat breakfast and for the late night drinkers and gamblers to eat at whatever time they desire to head home. As for Walmart, the Casino is Atmore’s Walmart. It is doing to Atmore exactly what Walmart has done to many towns across the Country. It is drawing all new business to the interstate where eventually all travelers and locals will be spending most of their money with the exception of what they will spend at Malbis, Pensacola or one of the many Walmarts in driving distance. The only thing Walmart would do, because it would also go to the interstate, is put the icing on the cake for Atmore. Unfortunately Atmore did nothing to ever build any inner city bussiness or industry to provide jobs and stability to the city. All the eggs have now been placed in the Casino basket and that will be the new Atmore. Notice how many towns have a stretch of empty road between the old town and the new town on the interstate. That will be Atmore in a few years.

Don’t you see what’s happening at Rivercane? They are getting all these “worthless” food chains to come in instead of places that will help the citizens of the Atmore area.
Some industry would be nice to see, but they seem to think Wind Creek Casino is the ONLY place anyone would WANT to work. So not true. The Creek’s have the industry all wrapped up and the city of Atmore is laying back and letting them take control! Get a mayor with “a pair” who’s not afraid to stand up for his/her city! Sure the casino has local entertainment under wraps, but “everybody” in Atmore and the surrounding area can’t “afford” to go there and LOSE their paychecks!

Ok first of all Waffle House should not be classified as a restaurant. It is more like a fast food eatery. I don’t think they take reservations and forget it if you need a table for more than four. Come on folks! Be realistic! A Waffle House is not going to draw travelers from i65. Get real. We need industry that will bring jobs and decent wages as well as meet the community’s needs. If nothing else don’t classify Waffle House as a restaurant!

Waffle House!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Come on Atmore I am college student that goes to school in Huntsville and that 5 hour drive kills me when I leave the city and get off on exit 57 only to see im back in the country. I see so more much potential on highway 21. I say let the Indians buy River Cane so that they can do the works and get Atmore on the 21 century track with the rest of the world. Can we get a Golden Carrol, TGIF, Cheddars, Red Lobster, Wendy’s, Taco Bell, Sonic, Texas Roadhouse, Ruth Chris Steak House, Boiling Pot, Logans, Olive Garden even Chick Fil A.

    Re:429CSJ

I like your thinking. Restuarants are alright. But we need something up here to draw more money into our little economy (since North Escambia seems to be left out of a lot of things). The speed way is there and use to be a really busy spot, I hope those that run what is left can use some of the suggestions of bringing more races this way. The only other one I know about is all the way on Pine Forest Road. Heck even if they open more racers for Hot Roaders that have nowhere to run. Would be a lot of fun to watch.
Walmart would be good. Cracker Barrel (love their french toast w/cherries) and maybe Taco Bell or Cpt D’s. :D

If you had a water park up there, those kids would be good and hungry after romping and playing in that cool water and ready to eat, adults too. If the Creek Nation, reg T.M., would open the drag strip and put some larger purses on top fuel and AA/Funny Car, large crowds of people would pour into River Cane and the hotel/motels, on weekends.

So the mystery is solved…If my memory serves me correctly I “vaguely” remember rumors that Atmore would soon be getting another restaurant at Rivercane if negotiations were successful….Waffle House I suppose in some peoples eyes is a restaurant…Just another short order, 4 to the table(you ever tried to pull tables together at Waffle House) establishment to eat…Still gotta drive 30-50 miles for dinner….geez!

  9. me on March 28th, 2012 7:51 am

They really need to get food out of their heads out there and get some retail shopping at Rivercane. There is plenty to eat at the casino alone…there is nothing else for the people to do that are coming out there. they need a nice mens shop so they can do something else while they are here

  10. randy on March 28th, 2012 5:16 am

They need to try and get a Super Target out there. There are Walmarts in Brewton, Monroeville, and Bay Minette. The nearest Targets are in Daphne,Mobile, and Pensacola.

Hello Bratt Resident, but of course I will allow you to do the worrying, but as far as Atmore is concerned, I was born there, My family lives and is buried there. I will be sure to leave you alone by all means, as I quitely pass through Bratt, on my way there.

What about a big box retailer? Or a new factory? Or something that pays real wages….so the workers can pump their money into local economy.

  15. Jh on March 27th, 2012 3:52 pm

Well if Atmore wants a good Resturant bring in a Ryan’s or Logan’s, O Charley’s. But a Whaffle House. No Thank U. Love the Walmart idea, only if it could be a huge Supercenter Walmart. Bowling Alley would be nice. Anything besides a boring old Whaffle House. An IHOP now U talking. As far as big box stores a Lowe’s or Home Depot would be very nice. Stop putting boring stuff at River Cane. Surprised Hardee’s is still there. Or bring Red Lobster to Atmore. Keep putting boring stuff in and people would rather spend money elsewhere. Wendy’s and Cracker Barrel was great suggestions to.

Re: 429scj. If yur worried about hwy 97 & 29 then leave us alone who live around Atmore. You just stay down there and let us worry about what goes on up here!!!!!

  17. J/C on March 27th, 2012 2:39 pm

NO WAFFLE HOUSE!!!!! TACO BELL, CHICK FIL-A, WENDY’S, DENY’S, CRACKER BARREL, APPLEBEE’S, RESTURANTS LIKE THESE WOULD WORK……NOT WAFFLE HOUSE……..JUST SAYING……..OR EVEN A K-MART OR WAL-MART……SOMETHING TO BRING MONEY TO ATMORE OTHER THAN THE CASINO……WE HAVE TO GO TO BAYMINETT FOR SPECIALITY ITEMS THAT FOOD WORLD AND WINN DIXIE DON’T HAVE. IT GETS OLD TO SHOPPING AT THE GENERAL DOLLAR AND FRED’S NOT THAT THERE IS ANYTHING WRONG WITH THAT,……ALL ABOUT BRINGING JOBS IN BUT SOMETHING THAT OUT -OF -TOWN PEOPLE WOULD APPERCAITE AS WELL AS THE LOCAL’S!

  18. Yay! on March 27th, 2012 1:08 pm

    This is fantastic!

  19. joe on March 27th, 2012 12:44 pm

I support local businesses as much as I can, but when they are no longer able or willing to meet the needs of the customers, it is time for change.
I welcome new business to the Atmore Area.

RE: “Huddle House might as well close it’s doors”
it amazes me their doors have stayed open as long as they have! they are always running out of menu items (like eggs!!!) and the manager does not seem to care about the problems or have any concern with fixing them. perhaps it is a time for big business to come in and offer some healthy competition for business.
This is free enterprise at it’s finest! I love America!!!!

  21. AG on March 27th, 2012 9:53 am

Im so with the person that said a WALMART, that would be awesome. Then the folks up here wouldn’t have to drive to Mobile, Pensacola or Brewton to shop…. Im just saying… It would be nice..

May as well shut down Monroe co, Oh well it’s dead anyway…

  23. darryl on March 27th, 2012 9:28 am

Sorry, but I’m still stuck trying to tie the word “restaurant” to a Waffle House.

  24. fed-up on March 27th, 2012 9:11 am

How about getting a few industries that offer retirement plans, decent wages (higher than minimum wage), and benefits for the people of Atmore. I agree that these restaurants are nice to have but so is a stable job. But, we know the “OLD ATMORE” will never have anything like that. POLITICS!!!!!

  25. 429SCJ on March 27th, 2012 8:15 am

River Cane. It sounds like a tourist trap. We could use that Waffle House at the 97/29 intersection.
