Thompson Life Sentence Upheld For Cheryl Cain Murder

A man serving a life sentence for murdering a Cantonment woman in 2009 and leaving her body in a dumpster has lost an appeal in the case.

Scott Joseph Thompson appealed his second degree murder conviction for the strangulation death of Cheryl Cain based upon an alleged lack of evidence against him at trial. His conviction was affirmed late last week by the First District Court of Appeals.

He is continuing to serve his life sentence at the Graceville Correctional Facility.

When he was arrested on the second degree murder charges, Thompson was already in the Escambia County Jail for violating probation on 2007 narcotics charges, according to court records, waiting for a bed to become available in a drug treatment facility.

caincheryl.jpgCain’s body was found in a dumpster behind a former gas station on Highway 29 at Burgess Road in Pensacola on March 25, 2009. DNA evidence from the dumpster and in Cain’s car were used to charge Thompson with murder, according to the Escambia County Sheriff’s Department. Thompson’s DNA was reportedly found in Cain’s vehicle, which was located after the murder at a Pensacola motel.

Phone records also connected Thompson to Cain, as well as a witness that testified that the two argued over money the last day she was seen alive.

@me> I wasn’t saying she did drugs or that she was lost to drugs. I was saying her life was taken because of some dummy doing drugs!!!! If you could comprehend what you read then you wouldn’t be shooting your mouth off. This was a terrible thing that happened to all involved (families & victim).

@leochic two lives were not lost to drugs!!!!!! One life was lost to murder read the article again…..as I said before I was in the courtroom & she was very much clean just because people you are around do drugs doesn’t me that you do them!!!

Yes, 2 lives were lost over drugs. One from doing the drugs and one from unfortunately being associated with the one doing drugs. This beautiful young woman was taken from this world in a horrific manner. No one deserves that! I don’t understand how someone suffers like this at the hands of others but the murderers get to sit in prison. Even if it is for life. I think the way they murdered their victim should be their IMMEDIATE punishment.
I send my deepest sympathy to both families. Especially the Cain’s.

Look at that young girl who will never get to experience the adult life of
    LIVING HER DREAM.

May this young man DIE UNHAPPY AND ALONE in our jails.

Ok Mary let me follow your logic….Scott is a Good guy……He uses drugs….therefore its ok to murder strangle and throw away another human being….and if she was using drugs then it really makes it ok because they both are using drugs…………….How in the world is Cheryl guilty??? She was murdered……This is the reason this world has not accountablilty to God for personal sin its everybody elses fault. Adam blamed Eve for his Sin Eve blamed God this boy needs to confess and Man up! And I would not want to be Mary justifying to God why its ok to Murder…………Everett are you kidding me???

Manual Strangulation is about as deliberate as it gets. This man was thinking about what he was doing, focused. I do not understand why he was not executed. If only Bandit had been with Ms. Caine that day.

    To answer “Unbelievable”

We all start out good in this world. After that it’s all based on choices. Drugs are a bad choice. I’m sure this guy until drugs took over was a good guy. Did you actually know this guy and if so why didn’t you try to help him rather than point fingers.

There are no inncocent parties either way.

@Mary did you not read this article correctly?? Nowhere does it say she died of a drug overdose…..she was murdered by Scott two lives were not taken from drugs one life was taken from being killed… I don’t know how he could be a good guy if he killed someone do you??? & I know for a fact she was clean!!!! I was in the courtroom..

  9. mary on February 21st, 2012 5:01 pm

@Unbelieveable…If you read my comment correctly..2 (TWO) lives lost to drugs!! Thats all I’m saying..I knew Scott & he has been in my house before..my husband has worked w/him. He got into drugs & I’m sorry about Cheryl’s family but most of the time, you do drugs you usually hang out w/other drug users.

Mary are you kidding me…..I hate to see what your definintion of a bad guy is…..Good guys dont murder a girl then throw her away like a piece of trash!! I sat in that courtroom and my word if he is a good guy this world is in trouble. I hope you never run into a good guy!

Bratt Chick sorry but frying him would be WAY to easy, I think he should suffer to the point of death how he killed her over and over but no actually die so he can has to live over and over what he done to her. Poor young Cheryl.

The sad part is these 2 lives were lost over drugs! Scott needs to write a book while is in prison instead of a rehab! He was a good guy!!

I’m happy to see him doing his time. I know the Cain’s personally and they are some of the best people I know. They are just down to earth honest working people who have a very strong family bond. I know it was hard on them and maybe knowing the person who is responsible for this is gonna stay locked up will give them a little comfort.

I remember when I first heard of this back in 2009.. I knew Scott in high school from class, and I knew of Cheryl. I remember Scott being a class clown. He was a pretty funny guy. It is shocking to hear of someone you knew committing such an unspeakable act. My heart goes out to Cheryls’ family and friends. I do believe he got what he deserved, a lifetime to sit and reflect on his actions, although he took two lives that day.

Verrryyy happy to hear he will have to serve life for taking the life of a very sweet, loved, friend, sister, daughter… Her life may have been short but she was someone who made an impression in anyone & everyone’s lives she crossed, her smile, her sense of humor, her love of the country life & animals…Cheryl will always be missed & never forgotten…may all her family & friends find more peace in knowing that this monster is at veryy least going to rot in jail! In my opinion he got off ez!

Such a beautiful young woman, a life lost.
My prayers to her family and may God continue to wrap his arms around them, and comfort them.
My heart goes out to Cheryl’s family.
