Santa Rosa Man Sentenced To Life For Killing His Mother

February 2, 2012

A Milton man will spend the rest of his life in prison for a 2011 murder.

State Attorney William “Bill” Eddins said David J. Lewis of Milton was sentenced by Judge David Rimmer to life in prison without possibility of parole for the September 30, 2008, murder of his 86-year old mother, Bonnie Lewis.

The 56-year old Lewis pleaded no contest to second degree murder with a weapon on July 18, 2011, as well as to the fleeing and resisting arrest charges. He received concurrent 15 and 5 year prison sentences for the fleeing and resisting charges respectively.

Family members found Bonnie Lewis slumped in a living room chair in her home at 3290 Lewis Road in Milton on September 30, 2008. Mrs. Lewis’s throat had been slashed at her front door and evidence at the scene showed she had managed to make her way to the living room chair before succumbing to her injury. David Lewis was arrested on October 1, 2008, for an outstanding arrest warrant for resisting arrest with violence and fleeing and attempt to elude arising from an unrelated high speed chase on September 10, 2008, which ended with Lewis being tased into submission as he resisted arrest by Santa Rosa County deputies. On October 2 ,2008, Lewis confessed to Santa Rosa County Sheriff’s detectives that he had murdered his mother with a knife when he “snapped” because she “treated me like a twelve year old”.

    @Betty
If he had mental issues then I’m assuming he knew he had them which leads me to believe he either never got help or stopped taking his meds. Either way to try to make us feel bad for thinking he’s a piece of doo doo isn’t going to work. He made a decision to do or not do what he did. The domino effect..don’t seek mental health care or take your meds you become psychotic. He made his children fatherless and his kids grandmotherless. Not me and not you.

We as a society have got to stop blaming senseless crimes like this on mental health. Take your meds or seek help. Otherwise it is your fault not your easy out of oh I’m crazy.

I suffer from depression as do most of my siblings. If I don’t take me meds I know I cry for days and eventually end up I’m a hospital somewhere. My choice to take the meds because I want to be well. His choice..to not be well

It is so sad for all involved. People can write mean things & hurtful things but it does not change the facts. I have to believe there was mental illness to cause such a thing or drug abuse. Prayers for all would be good.

Her\e is the real tragedy of this story. A woman who had her throat slashed , and the people who say this man is where he belongs. He IS NOT where he belongs. He belongs in the cemetery!!!

Well, I know the family is suffering but They must be breathing easier since this nut case is out of their lives. If he would slit his mother’s throat, what would he do to a kid that was doing childish things???

Heart breaking that someone would do that to someone who brought him into the world.

To many men now days never put on their big boy pants so I’m not sure
how they expect their parents to treat them.

    STORY:
BOB BARKER told this with a snide voice on his show the PRICE IS RIGHT.
One day when he was about 40 years old, he and his two good friend ( Marshall arts instructors) were practicing the self defense arts and working out when BOB got a full on KICK and was badly injured and could not work for a while.
When he called his mother and told her what had happened so she would
not hear it around hollywood and worry her reply was, “BOB, you have got
to stop playing with those boys”. OF course even with the sneer in his voice as
BOB mimicked mimicked what his mother had said he laughed afterward and it was just meant to be funny.

As to this guy, sounds like he is going right where he belongs, and he will just
have to get used to how young boys are treated there..

David suffered from mental illness for years..it’s documented..Having known this wonderful family for 20+ years..it is a sad day. There are children who have lost a Granny and a father..David was a hard working family man until his mental health spiraled downward. His mother was a devout christian lady who would have been the first to forgive him…never judge without knowing all the facts and history…

    REGARDING:
” – - – no one wins. His children have lost their father ”

It may not look like a win in the traditional sense, but not being around people who just lose it and cut your throat may have some benefits. I assume they can visit him with a clear wall separating and protecting them.

    David for caution with crazies

all of you who post need to remember that not matter what happens to this man no one wins. His children have lost their father and grandmother and her children have lost their mother and brother. Be careful what you post. Although we never forget we have to forgive becuase God will be the ulitmate judge.

What more needs to be said…

The rest of his life isn’t long enough to pay for what his mother saw in her last moments of her life! He should pay with his now!!!

    CONTEMPLATING:
“- – - she “treated me like a twelve year old”.”

Whereas killing her was soooo mature?

David hoping he gets good roommates too

This is a face only a mother could love…kinda weird when you think about raising a child that will eventually murder you…sad when lifes journey leads to this event
