Residents Report Shake, Rattle Wednesday Afternoon

February 8, 2012

Residents across part of Escambia County reported a strong shaking just before 2:00 Wednesday afternoon, and the event was recorded on seismic equipment at Pensacola State College.

A seismograph located at PSC record a strong “spike” at 1:52 p.m. The spike was not like that seen in an earthquake, officials said, but more like would be seen from a sonic boom or some sort of an explosion. Emergency officials did not receive an reports of an explosion in the county.

Most of the reports of shaking came from the southern two-thirds of the county — from the coast to just north of Cantonment.

There was a similar report of shaking or an explosion felt across North Escambia and into south Alabama on January 14. There was never any official explanation of the event.

There have been several of these noises/shaking over the last two weeks. My first reaction was that it was an accident on Hwy 29/97. But I heard no sirens so I decided it might be a sonic boom from a distance. It didn’t feel like an earthquake. Is this from the new jets at Eglin?

I heard the one this morning around 10am in Atmore. From inside the house it sounded like someone quietly, yet forcefully bumping on a wall. It shook hard enough to rattle the windows in my house, but I didn’t hear anything this afternoon.

Where were you guys that heard the one this morning?

Strange enough. it was late afternoon when we felt it down here. It was just a mild ground bump up… twice. … no big deal, just “noted”

I heard a loud boom this morning as well, I had no idea of what it was; now I see this on here about this happening today, so I don’t guess I’m going crazy; I actually did hear it…

i believe it was today..maybe yesterday…in cantonment….but, there sounded like there were several planes/jets above (altho, i didnt see them) doing what sounded like practicing for an air show maybe….maybe a sonic boom from that?

I heard some type of loud boom and shaking this morning, about 10am or earlier, shook the house, I first thought it was like a explosion.
