Family Of Five Homeless After Tree Falls Into Mobile Home

February 25, 2012

A Cantonment family of five was left homeless Friday afternoon when a tree crashed through their mobile home.

High winds associated with a passing cold front sent the tree into the mobile home on Andalusia Road, just north of Muscogee Road. There were no injuries; no one was at home at the time.

The American Red Cross is providing temporary assistance to the family of two adults and three children — ages 6, 8 and 15.

I worked at a hotel for several years. The owner did not want to accept Red Cross clients because of the damages left half the time, Red Cross can not be held legally liable. If this family wants to stay somewhere nicer (often much more safer) its going to have to come out of their pockets, or at least they will need to place their own personal credit card or debit card on file while other people help pay for each night.

In times of disaster Red Cross doesn’t get to pre-screen its clients and do proper financial and criminal background checks.

JM, you are right. No one would want to stay in some dump motel for free for very long ! I am sure the Red Cross could have given so much more to them,,,,especially when you think about that huge donation that you gave to them eh?

When my house burned down I was very happy to recieve the assistance of the red cross, I am sure they are too. The Red Cross works soley off of donations you are given a voucher with an amount, so Its they’re choice of hotel within reason.

These people will still need our donations as the Red Cross only puts them
up in some dump hotel. I an assure you they won’t want to stay there very long.
They are safe and warm for a couple nights, but their struggle has just begun.
