Dogs Seized After Authorities Find 90 Animals In Poor Conditions

February 15, 2012

Escambia County Animal Control officers seized about 20 dogs from a North Escambia property Tuesday after finding about 90 animals living in poor conditions.

Animal control responded to the property in the 2800 block of Lawson Lane off Jacks Branch Road in response to a dog bite complaint. When they arrived, they discovered 50 or more dogs, 20 hogs and about 17 goats, according to Kelly Cooke, spokesperson for Escambia County.

Escambia County Sheriff’s deputies stood by as county animal control officers seized about 20 of the dogs. “They were the ones that were in really, really bad health or bad shape,” Cooke said.

About a half dozen of the dogs were improperly tethered, while most of the 50 dogs had improper shelter or pens, according to Escambia County Animal Control.

Cooke said that the Escambia County Animal Shelter would head to court seeking custody of the animals, and criminal charges may be filed against the property owner.

Escambia County Animal Control officials believe the animals may have been involved in some type of hunting activity where the dogs were released to hunt the hogs. Cooke said most of the dogs were some sort of hound breed, while about 10 were possibly a bulldog breed. She said that animals did not appear to have been involved in any dog fighting activities.

The incident remains under investigation.

wow! People amaze me, and I’m not talking about the man in the story, Im talking about all you who must be perfect and rightous, but I still find all of your comments amusing and pathetic. I’m sure none of you know the full story of the situation but you still judge him like you do. Dont worry, in the end you will be judged the way you judged others.

Melissa, don’t know if you own or rent (maybe no pitbulls is a landlord restriction), but here is current status on BSL in Florida: Florida HB 997 / SB 1322 are very simple bills that would repeal Miami-Dade County’s breed ban. State law PROHIBITS Florida municipalities from passing BSL or breed bans, but makes an exception for Miami-Dade’s long-standing breed ban. Florida HB 997 / SB 1322 deletes the single sentence in state law that creates the exception for Miami-Dade. If the bills pass, Miami-Dade county would be required to repeal their breed ban.

These two bills are making their way thru the Florida legislature now. There have been many local cases of rescued pitbulls who had been terribly abused by humans, ultimately adopted into loving homes. It does happen.

There has been comments I agree and also disagree with. I am southern and I think you never kill anything other than for food purposes. I can not have children and I have 15 chickens(all have names). A 12year old five pound sweety and a BULLDOG! Everyone crys and screams about animal rights.lol Has anyone taken the time to know we kill all bulldogs here. They can be sweet ,well mannered and loyal. We can not adopt, foster or anything because they are in this bread.Tell me where the abuse comes from. Who made the rules on which ones are acceptable and which are not. I got a few acres and they will not let me bring a Bulldog home. So maybe we should check the truth before we complain.

How can a person take care of 90 animals?? If he didn’t have the time or money , he shouldn’t of had that many!!

I really wish people would wait until they have the whole story before they make posts. Like the ones that are on here. There has been no picture posted of the dogs that they say needed to be put down. They always show picture of the dogs that are in bad shape why is it different in this case. I want to make sure that everyone knows that the only dogs that they put down where bulldogs. So I guess that bulldog now mean bad shape. Also for all these people that are posting that if he can miss treat a dog that he can miss treat a child. I want you to know that this man has done a lot for this community. He is part of most of the benefits that happen in this town that are for children. Two of the hogs that where there were for the make a wish benefit. This is not a bad person and if you don’t believe me go down to animal control and demand to see these dogs and see for yourself that they are not in bad shape.

I know that all people do not mean to be cruel. Some people have a mental disorder called hoarding. This includes animals. However, they need therapy and removal of animals they cannot care for. I would like to know more before my verdict. Best hog dog I ever had was a Catahoula Cur and Pit Bull cross by the way. I would never be ashamed to say I was Southern, either. I was blessed to be an American. God’s good grace made me Southern! There are animal hoarders and cruelty cases every where.

that many animals could eat five hundred lbs of food a day, ,it would take eight hrs a day to tend , them,,,let a lone fence mending,, if it were raining and wet , it would be a slophole, in no way helpful to any animal,

This is sad about the animals, put I do want to say something about Escambia Counties Animal Control. I had an emergency this past weekend with my dog who got under the house and got stuck and could not get out. I live in a rented house and there was a small hole behind a shelf in the added on garage where the dog was going under the house. Well since the space is to small to be a crawl space, no adult human could fit in it, so I guess it is just a space under the house. I did not know what to do so I contacted animal control for some help. They responded with “we can not go under a house”. I told them they could not fit anyway but could they please come and see if they could do anything. They said there was nothing they could do. They said bust your floor through, I asked if there was any other solution could they at least come out to assess the situation, they said no. The operator told me there was no reason there was nothing they could do. I then questioned if they were any kind of animal provider in any way if they would not even try to assess the situation. I was very displeased with the service and professionalism of this person/group. I just wanted to say that about the hero’s of this story or left my dog to die. But luckily without the renters permission I decided to bust out the floor, where the noise was so loud and frightening to the dog that it somehow forced its way out and found its way back to the opening. No thanks to the Animal Control Team.

    To Sad

I love my children and grandchildren but I also love my animals and will not let them go hungry. Animals are a good companionship for a lot of people and it is said that if you care for pets you will live a longer and happier life. Have you thought about getting a pet to make you less sad?

  14. Happy on February 15th, 2012 3:44 pm

    To SAD,
Apparently you haven’t experienced the love of an animal, they contribute alot to a family. To own an animal is a luxury, if you can’t afford to feed and take care of one, you don’t deserve one. When people mistreat animals, it is from something deep inside them, which is not good at all. And most of the time will turn out to be a bigger problem one day. Animals are God’s creatures too! I am Happy to love my animals and children in the family as well. No wonder you are SAD with your attitude. Have you ever watched a child with a kitten or a puppy, they contribute alot to their happiness…..open your eyes and heart.

  16. B.Bunny on February 15th, 2012 1:03 pm

    @bla
I almost forgot to mention the last I checked not to many people eat dog. I guess you missed it when they took the dogs that were so bad they needed to be taken or they’d die

  17. B.Bunny on February 15th, 2012 1:00 pm

    @bla
You can’t be serious. Really? There is a big difference in killing animals to eat and mistreating and starving animals. Apples and oranges sweetie and far as your first two posts..what?

  18. Rena on February 15th, 2012 12:51 pm

    Misty,
Never let anyone embarrass you for being Southern!! You must not know the rest of the country envies us Southerners!! Thats why they have shows about us!! So what if some people are dumb, like the south has all the dumb ones?? Please!! Southerners have more fun than the rest of the country! We have nice warm water and beautiful rivers and beaches unlike the snowbirds.

  19. Sammie on February 15th, 2012 11:43 am

    Sad,..

just who do you think is ALSO working on child welfare, Guardian Ad Litem programs and mentoring programs with children EVER DAY.

Yes.. the SAME people who are fighing against the abuse of animals. And yes, we could use HELP instead of your whining.

  20. Char on February 15th, 2012 11:29 am

This kind of thing will continue as long as there is even one person who
thinks that the inhumane treatment of an animal is ok.

So I guess it is up to the mothers of this world to teach your children
about animals and to learn how to love one before they learn how to
    shoot, kill and dress one.

There is a large difference in killing for need and killing for sport.
When you teach a 5 year old to kill for sport, then that’s what they
learn and you can’t be surprised when they kill the wrong thing
in the DARK OF NIGHT FOR SPORT.

Ad the fact no one is teaching about respect of others and their property and …….

    CAOUS!

  21. Sad on February 15th, 2012 11:25 am

Now do the same for abused and neglected kids and I will be happy. I’m sick of this and poor pitiful puppies on commercials for the ASPCA. Give CHILDREN a good home and a chance at life. Since when has an animal contributed anything to society other than being a disability animal or police dog? People seem to care more for furry creatures than they do HUMANS!

  22. Misty on February 15th, 2012 11:17 am

It is down right embarrassing that once again the south is made to look
like a buch of trash – dog fighting, hog killing, noodle or catfishing with your hands….

Makes you not want to say your a Southerner.

I have lived right next to Lawson Lane for years and have called the Sherriff’s Office complaining about the dogs noise – it sounds like either the dogs are fighting or on a coon hunt. I’ve lived in rural areas my whole life so I think I know what “normal” noise sounds like. The response from the ECSD? They didn’t do anything serious about my complaints about possible dog fighting until we made a noise complaint. That response? Well, the guy has a scanner and gets tipped off when the ECSD comes out to investigate. This has been going on for years and I am just sick about it. Lawson Lane is a private road and me taking justice or investigation into my own hands resulted in warnings from area neighbors not to even go down there, that those people are dangerous. So I relied upon the ECSD to do something, their job.

As for you bla: “I never make the mistake of arguing with people for whose opinions I have no respect.”

  24. Scott on February 15th, 2012 9:46 am

    Jane,

I’m with you…as long as we can also whack the owner with a rolled up newspaper and stick his nose in poo.

  25. Hope Bush on February 15th, 2012 8:19 am

Yes – this should be elevated to a felony case!!! I pray that the owner NEVER gets his/her hands on these poor animals again. I pray that all the animals get a good home – if they can be saved.

  26. Jane on February 15th, 2012 8:01 am

This type of mistreatment should be a felony, punishable by putting the owner in jail and withholding food/water just long enough to make a point!

  27. bla on February 15th, 2012 8:00 am

Poor animal..do u eat Bacon? What about a ham sandwich? Ohh Ohh this is my fav..what about steak..yall eat that? Poor animal’s? Wow this one just getting to me today

  29. bla on February 15th, 2012 7:55 am

You have got to be kidding me..where can u live a simple quite country surroundings..next we won’t be able to hunt..common scam u county…were u at???

  30. Sheila Rodgers on February 15th, 2012 7:51 am

Since the reality shows about hog hunting have begun airing a lot of so called hunters have begun to trap wild hogs to “train” there dogs, unfortunately they are not prepared for the expense, time, and attention that is required and it is the animals that are suffering,
Unlike Deer hunting there is no season for hog hunting, so dogs will be used year round and that will increase supply and demand for more animals, which im afraid will lead to more neglect of the animals. Just like dog fighting if a dog wont fight, he is no good to the owner, if a dog wont catch a hog, he also is no good to the owner, Who is going to maintain an animal that does not serve there purpose, VERY FEW!!!

  31. Jane on February 15th, 2012 5:47 am

Poor animals! I hope they can be saved and find good homes!

  32. Jane on February 15th, 2012 5:00 am

I will never understand why people feel it is OK to mistreat animals. This is so wrong! I hope they can be saved and rescued into a good home!
