Century Honors Baseball Coaching Legend Floyd Adams

February 7, 2012

The Town of Century honored legendary baseball coach Floyd Adams Monday night with a proclamation highlighting some of his Century-area accomplishments.

Adams was head baseball coach at Century High School from 1968 to 1970 where he enjoyed a winning record and won the Escambia River Conference in 1969 and 1970. He was also named the conference’s coach of the year in 1969 and 1970. Adams also served as Northview High School’s coach during the 1996-1997 school year.

“The Mayor of the Town of Century, Florida, honors Floyd Adams for instilling and building Blackcat Pride in the young athletes of Century,” the proclamation presented Monday night states.

“I was honored to coach the very best wherever I went, and Century was no exception,” Adams said.

Last month, Adams was inducted into the Alabama Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame for his accomplishments in Alabama. At Jefferson Davis Community College in Brewton, Adams had a 10-season record of 303-149.

Adams also served as assistant coach for two years at Tate High School before moving up to serve as head coach for the Aggies for seven years.

Adams is a 1952 graduate of Escambia County High School in Atmore. He has been retired from coaching for over a decade.

I played 2 years at JD for coach. When I saw his passion for teaching baseball during a family day intrasquad game (other recruits saw a coach yelling) I knew this was for me. Being a kid who could have easily gone down the wrong path, he treated me like I mattered. After those 2 years I became lost again until I spoke to him on the phone and I got back on track. I am always indebted to him.
I once said to him “you like me coach, don’t you?” his reply “only when you’re hitting”. But the smile on his face told me what he really meant.

An athlete, scholar, teacher, coach and a gentleman. The paradigm for others to emulate. I have only positive memories of Coach Adams for my Tate HS years.

My boys, unfortunately, never had him for a Coach. However, they all highly respect him and think the world of him. When we see him in town he always makes a point to stop and talk with them. He builds them up each time he see’s them. Coach Adams is not only an “Outstanding” Coach but a wonderful person that my boys and I admire and look up to with much respect and high regard. A well deserved honor for a “Good Man”.

Whatever he (or us) was wearin……..I guarantee you it was being worn right. You are responsible for an entire generation of punctual, successful, responsible, upstanding former Aggies that have always been proud to say “I played for Floyd”………Congratulations coach.

I do believe he’s wearing the old “St. Louis blue” uniforms. I never could figure out how an Aggie uniform could be baby blue. :)

I learned a lot from you coach!

    Thank you!
