Bill Would Limit Funeral Protests

February 28, 2012

No protests would be allowed within 500 feet of a funeral under a bill was passed unanimously by the House and sent to the Senate.

The bill (HB 31), sponsored by Rep. Pat Rooney, R-Palm Beach Gardens, is a response to the protests that have been held at military funerals around the country by the Westboro Baptist Church in Kansas.

“A funeral is a time meant for family and friends to grieve and remember, it is not a time for a spectacle to be made,” Rooney said in a statement afterward. “For those that are suffering the terrible loss of a loved one, unwarranted harassment some attempt only compounds their grief creating a potential powder keg of emotion and violence.”

Westboro Baptist Church spreads its hate through picketing in our streets, provoking attacks, with abusive language and flag desecration, attempting to create a confrontation. This is not a church, this is a hate group. This is not about protesting, freedom, or God. They are in it for the money and the press; this is a family law firm. They are not a “church.” It is a scam. They go after anything that can get them in the news. This is a family of lawyers using this “god hates you” thing to make money. It is time for this scam and the hate to end.
The church has received money from lawsuits and legal fees. For example, they sued the city of Topeka several times in the 1990s(this show has been going on for years). WBC received $16,500, and is pursuing another $100,000, in legal fees for a case won in court. The WBC is considered a nonprofit organization by the federal government, and is therefore exempt from paying taxes!
Phelps-Roper of the Westboro Baptist Church is shown admitting on camera that her oldest son was born out of wedlock. Hypocritical Phelps-Roper’s vocal condemnation on strangers having sexual congress outside of marriage while she herself was guilty of the same. They are NOT what they say they are!! THEY ARE NOT A CHURCH!!!

Thank goodness I hope this bill makes it all the way. I have spent over 10 years as a commanding an Honor Guard and during this time I have had encounters with these people. It without a doubt is the most disrespectful thing anyone could do to a family of a fallen soilder or Veteran. The encounters I had with them at times got very ugly before law enforcement was allowed to stepp in. I think they cloak themselves with the church when in actually they are tyrants! I absolutely have nothing good to say about them whatso ever. I have seen way too many times the pain and sorrw of the families who have just lost their loved ones. I also had the honor of giving the family the final military tribute for their loved ones! A job I hold near and dear to my heart. The Honor Guards who preform these duties take great pride and care to be able to do this for the families. It is with great detail and care they do a presentation and it takes many hours of hard work to move with precision as they do. And we were not paid for this work nor do we ask for pay we are volunteers who happen to care enough to do the job. No military or Veteran should have to go to their grave being protested. If they want to protest something then let them protest the government not the very people who paid the price to serve and defend our country because the government said to do so. I guess they would celebrate a taritor as well huh.
In parting from my rant I would just like to say on the Honor Guard that I have served with all these years our motto is simply this: Serving Those Who Served Us! And it is always done with the utmost respect and care. It’s our job!
God Bess our troops and our Veterans. There should never be any room for protesters.

Although i believe in free speech i would be happy to make it against the law to protest any funeral. Doesn’t matter how much they were hated or disliked, or whatever it might be. If they are gone let them rest in peace

I wonder if any of these “religious protesters” would have an interest in traveling to …..lets say Iran and protesting for their perverted view of Christianity?
To the families of the fallen, I will continue to pray for you and Thank God for my freedoms that are protected by your loved ones sacrifice.
