Six Injured After Car Hits Escambia County Ambulance

February 6, 2012

Five people were injured after a car hit an Escambia County EMS ambulance Saturday night in Pensacola, and a pedestrian at the wreck scene was hit a short time later by another vehicle.

The incident happened about 7 p.m at Fairfield Drive and 9th Avenue.  The driver of a Nissan Sentra pulled into the path of the ambulance, which was responding to an emergency. Five people in the Sentra received minor injuries. There were no injuries in the ambulance.

A short time later, a child that was watching first responders work stepped into the street and was bumped by a car. The child’s injuries were very minor and did not require transport to the hospital.

It is dark at 7pm. Even without the sirens, if the driver has been more aware of his/her surroundings, he/she would have seen the ambulance coming because of its lights. Just because the driver didn’t hear the siren, doesn’t mean it wasn’t on.

If a tree falls in an empty forest, does it still make noise? Just because you don’t hear or see it doesn’t make it so.

I know the person involved in this crash and to clear things up.. The ambulance did not have its siren on.

There is no way the person driving that Sentra did not hear those sirens! It was only a matter of time before people’s complete disregard for emergency vehicles caused injuries again! I have almost been rear-ended then flipped off because I pulled onto the shoulder to allow an ambulance to safely go past me on a two-lane road. It’s as if people don’t realize it’s the law to give ANY emergency vehicle the right of way when they have their lights and sirens on! Learn the laws of the road, put down the cell phones, and pay attention! You wouldn’t want this to happen to YOU if you were in that ambulance; or if that firetruck coming to save your house became disabled at an intersection because of someone else’s sheer carelessness; or your children murdered because some idiot didn’t get out of that cop’s path on his way to the burglary happening at your house!
