Reported Chemical Exposure Shuts Down Escambia River Bridge
January 20, 2012
Concerns over a possible chemical exposure shut down the Escambia River Bridge on Highway 4 between Century and Jay Thursday morning.
A female reported about11:30 a.m. that she was overcome by some sort of chemical smell in her vehicle which prompted her to stop at the Santa Rosa County end of the bridge. The Jay Fire Department, Santa Rosa County Sheriff’s Office, Escambia County EMS and the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office responded.
The woman was transported by private vehicle to Jay Hospital in good condition.
Authorities were not able to pinpoint the alleged smell and quickly determined that there was no danger to the public before re– opening the bridge to traffic.
Further details were not available.

I went hunting Thursday morning by my house in Walnut hill .I was out side before daylight and I could smell propane very strong ,but didn’t think much about it ,as I arrived closer to my hunting spot I smelled it again strong enough I actually stopped for a sec to think it through because where I was headed is right beside a pipe line ,I continued to go hunting and didn’t smell it but a minute or two the wind picked up and the smell was gone
Olfactory hallucination..God, if I pulled over & called 911 every time I smelled something bad…
I was stopped in this line of traffic on the bridge, I didn’t smell anything unusual; but with the way the wind has been blowing, it could have been the paper mill in Brewton or the plant in Jay. I am glad that the lady is alright…
You are all missing the obvious……………..she ate Mexican food the night before at Jalisco’s!
With the SW Winds, she was probably smelling the Paper Mill. I’m guessing she’s not from around here.
but did anyone else smell anything?
She probably passed a rolling meth lab…
