Century Could Land 50 Jobs In Under 50 Days

January 5, 2012

If all works out as planned, 50 new jobs could be announced in Century in less than 50 days from now.

According to Century Mayor Freddie McCall, a company that would employ 50 people could announce that they are locating in Century by the middle of February.

“I had a call from a company I’ve been dealing with for a year,” McCall said. “They’ve got their financing and they are ready to do business. Hopefully they will be in here breaking ground by the 15th of February.”

McCall said he believes the economic development outlook for Century is about to improve dramatically in 2012, unlike the past couple of years were announced industries never materialized.

The most recent, Century Lumber & Land, announced a group of industries would locate in Century with up to 500 jobs. Over 3,000 people applied for jobs with the company, which held a ribbon cutting in October 2010. As 2011 rolled around, company officials continued to make promises — until James Leonard Craft, the manager of Century Lumber and Land, was jailed in Alabama on numerous securities and financial fraud related charges after being indicted as the result of an Alabama Securities Commission investigation.

The new company that could announce jobs for Century is totally unrelated to Century Lumber & Land or anyone associated with it, McCall said.

As for 50 new jobs for Century, McCall said, “That’s going to be a blessing to us”.

It seems as though the mayor is being close-mouthed about the name of the company because of the recent disappointments. It wasn’t his fault the Century Lumber company was dishonest. I’m sure he’s being just as wary & suspicious as those hoping for a job. I think maybe he’s waiting for more concrete proof the company is going to supply jobs for the area before making a detailed announcement. Surely, Mayor McCall is hoping for the best for his town’s citizens.

Why the doubt? Because it’s very frustrating to get your hopes up on something that is suppose to be very promising for the town of Century, just to learn over and over again that it fell through because it was all a sham to begin with.

I’m wondering why the Mayor and this “Mystery Company” are not coming forward upon announcing this information on who the new employer will be? That in itself sends up red flags to those who doubt… with good reason!

    REGARDING:
“Why is people so judgmental and have so much negativism ”

It is an unexplained phenomenon possibly associated with the saying:
    “Fool me once, shame on you;
fool me twice, shame on me.”

    or was it:
    “Once burned, twice shy” ?
(or in our case, A hundred times burned, forever shy.)

Anyhoo, if folks aren’t willing to be completely up front with their business affairs, suspicious minds suspect they must have something to hide. (If I hide something, I must have something to hide. It just stands to reason.)

I trust Freddie Wayne, but others have been known to lie to or mislead him and others in the far distant past.

    David forever hopeful
    but guarded

Rest on you laurels not your promises. Cut the ribbon but don’t publish the photos. We’re not fools. Publish instead the first tax check paid by the company for doing business in the city for a year. THEN y’all can celebrate.

    Erica,
Could be most of these people have jobs and could care less.

Of course some of us are just naturals when it comes to complaining.

    Not helping but complaining.

Why is people so judgemental and have so much negativism towards the town! Everyone is always complaining about something. You should hope for the best for your town!

So tired of announcements of jobs that never happen. It makes me sick.

Sure Freddie. Just like all of the other businesses that were coming; just like your pre-election promise to do something about that run down building on Mayo Street the town owns. It is worse now than ever. Code enforcement was all over the lady next door and now she that she did her part, she has to live next to a building with side off; insulation blowing off; glass front door broken; rats and vandals.
    All talk. No action.
