Bratt Home Invasion Under Investigation

January 10, 2012

The Escambia County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a reported home invasion Monday night in Bratt.

The incident was reported about 10:15 p.m. in the 8000 block of Bratt Road, near Camp Road and the Escambia County Road Department’s Camp Five. Deputies arrived on scene within five minutes of the call.

A resident told deputies that he was in his bathroom when he heard a noise. He investigated and reportedly observed a tall, skinny black male dressed in all black and wearing a ski mask in his living room.

The resident reportedly ran to a closet and armed himself with a rifle. He said he accidentally fired  through the roof of the home at which time  black male fled the residence.

A K-9 team from the Century Correctional Institution responded as deputies set up a perimeter around the area. They were unable to locate the suspect.

The adult male resident, who was alone at the time of the incident, was not injured.

Anyone with information on the burglary is asked to call the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office at (850) 436-9620 or Crime Stoppers at (850) 433-STOP.

….and for Pete’s sake, If you are gonna keep a firearm for home protection, at least learn how to use it properly and practice with it as often as possible. Get professional training if you can!

I know times are hard for a lot of people. I also know that drugs makes people do stupid stuff, but out here in the country, we just have to stand our ground, look out for one another and if we start doing away with the thieves, after awhile they will know we mean business and hopefully stay away. We live in ‘God’s Country’, live and let live, but it’s time for us to protect what we’ve worked hard all these years to have. And it’s time for the thieves to do the same or do without. Just saying~

On April 26, 2005, Governor Jeb Bush SIGNED SB-436 “Castle Doctrine” into law.

The Florida “Castle Doctrine” law basically does three things:

One: It establishes, in law, the presumption that a criminal who forcibly enters or intrudes into your home is there to cause death or great bodily harm, therefore a person may use any manner of force, including deadly force, against that person.

Two: It removes the “duty to retreat” if you are attacked in any place you have a right to be.

Three: It provides that persons using force authorized by law shall not be prosecuted for using such force.

It also prohibits criminals and their families from suing victims for injuring or killing the criminals who have attacked them.

well, since my german shepard has the risk of some maniac hurting her, time to take matters into my own hands, I did not own a gun but as of Fri I will and i WILL NOT be afraid to use it, I have children to protect and out here in Bratt it may take deputies 30 min or longer to get to your home depending on how far out you live, if they break into my home it will be DOA for someone. Dont take to well to having this kinda stress in this neighborhood and I work TO HARD to let some thief take what me and my husband work for. You are all right, TIME TO ARM YOUR HOME !

What caliber does the hornet and wasp spray come in?

  8. neighborswatching on January 10th, 2012 2:41 pm

FYI…my gun is ready and I’m not afraid to use it, but I’ve read that a can of wasp and hornet spray does the trick if you don’t want to shoot someone. You can aim it in their eyes at a distance, it disables them because they become blind temporarily, you get away to get help and the law gets there to remove them from your property. They have to go to the ER to have them washed to be able to see again. Got my wasp spray and my ’snake gun’ handy! Don’t mess with Texas~

It’s time for home owners to arm themselves against these sorry theives; who
do not want to work. And have decided to break in and take what you have worked hard to get. If we start shooting these sorry theives who break in and kill a few of them ;we might get their attention that we are not taking it anymore. Looks like its time for old time justice.

For those of you that live in the area – I personally believe that you may want to consider arming yourselves and not depend solely on the Deputies. The time it may take for them to respond may be all the time that the perpetrator needs to commit some very heinous crimes against you and the ones that you love. I also consider that to be very irresponsible of you for not being prepared to defend yourselves. And, then, of course you would want to blame LEO. Just sayin’.

DAVID–Accidents happen some times with a fire arm. I recall a member of the S.O. SWAT team who was also a fire arms instructor, shooting his self in the leg. There should not be “accidents” with guns- but they do happen. Failure to clear the weapon appears to be the big cause of many “accidents”

“David, I’m pretty sure if you found a fella in your home wearing a ski mask, you would’ve been a little startled yourself and could have just as easily made the same mistake.”

I might if I weren’t careful; handling a firearm is not a good time to be careless. We had a hole in the wall in our kitchen where Howard shot during cleaning. At least he had always been taught to NEVER point at anybody he didn’t intend to kill, so it just hit beside me.

It’s easy to do by accident. It’s worth being careful to avoid roof repairs and wasting a shot which could have been fired more appropriately elsewhere. Better hunting next time. (By the way, people who break in often return since they’ve already gotten the lay-out.)

@ Morgan won’t tell: I for one am glad that the scanners no longer work for the general public. The encrypted radio system that the sheriff’s office now uses is best for them. It is a safety issue for LE because the perp cannot monitor their traffic.

However you can always go out and spend the money for a digital scanner that may or may not receive the ECSO traffic.

  14. Morgan won't tell on January 10th, 2012 9:12 am

    >> residents should KNOW when there’s someone on the loose by their dang house.

And these days if you have a scanner you still can’t tell if there’s a murderer in your neighborhood because the scanner is nothing but static. Morgan is hiding crime, election year and all.

  15. uh... on January 10th, 2012 8:21 am

sure am glad I called the Sherrif’s office to find out what was going on and all they said was “we had a call were investigating.” that guy would have broke into my house he would have gotten shot and I would have had ZERO respect for our sherrif’s department anymore. residents should KNOW when there’s someone on the loose by their dang house.

You got that right “bratt res”. And it’s gonna get worse before it gets better. WTG ESCO! Too bad his gun wasn’t pointed at the intruder when he accidently fired it. We have 2 mouthy little dogs. And they yep at every noise and bump.

  19. Jane on January 10th, 2012 5:58 am

Sorry about his roof…it will rain today…oh dear! But I’m glad he had his rifle handy! And the response time for the ESCO is excellent!
