Not About The Catch: Pen Wheels Fishing Rodeo Held In North Escambia
May 1, 2011
The sounds of excitement were all around Saturday for the 37th annual Pen Wheels Fishing Rodeo in Walnut Hill.
Over the history of the fishing rodeo, it has been held at locations ranging from Ft. Pickens to the Three Mile Bridge in Pensacola. Since 2001, it has been held at Jantz’s Catfish Pond on South Highway 99, just off Highway 97.
Dozens of volunteers stood ready Saturday to help the disabled. They baited hooks, tossed a line and offered words of friendly encouragement.
Dozens of disabled people were registered in Saturday’s fishing rodeo. They were from around the area, including Pensacola and Century. Several residents from the Century Care Center participated. The Pen Wheels Fishing Rodeo is provided to the disabled for free as a project of the Pensacola Fiesta of Five Flags organization. Escambia Grain in Walnut Hill supplies the cold drinks, Escambia River Electric Cooperative supplies the ice, the Walnut Hill Mennonite Youth Group supplies and serves the lunch, and the Masons from Milton volunteer to set up the fishing tackle and help clean the fish.

Second Mistrial For Billings Murder Suspect Stallworth
May 1, 2011
The second trial of Billings murder suspect Donnie Stallworth of Brewton ended with another mistrial Saturday afternoon.
Stallworth is facing two counts of first degree murder in connection with the shooting deaths of the Beulah couple in July 2009 — one of seven people charged in the double murder. The former Air Force staff sergeant went on trial last month, but a judge declared a mistrial after a jury could not decide his fate during nine hours of deliberations. His second trial this week came to an end Saturday when the jury announced they were deadlocked after two days of deliberations.
Judge Nick Geeker has scheduled a third trial for Stallworth beginning May 23.
Stallworth was accused of being in the home at time of the murders, armed with a gun. The accusations came from two co-defendants, 16-year old Rakeem Florence and 21-year old Fredrick Thorton. Both pleaded not contest to a lessor second degree murder charge in exchange for their testimony.
Residents Come Together To Help Tornado Victims
May 1, 2011
They came from Flomaton. Cantonment. Century. Even Illinois.
Vehicle after vehicle turned into the Flomaton Volunteer Fire Department Saturday to help Alabama tornado victims. Some gave cases of water, some gave handfuls of cash. Others gave what pocket change they could spare. But together, they raised hundreds of dollars and thousands of pounds of supplies for Alabama residents whose lives were ripped apart by the second deadliest tornado outbreak in U.S. history.
“Words cannot express how grateful we are for all that was done today,” Alisa Hart of the Flomaton Volunteer Fire Department said. “We are so proud and honored to be a part of this community.”
“Tuscaloosa was one of the first to help us after Ivan,” Larry White said on WPFL radio. White is an owner of the small station licensed to Century, and he’s also an Escambia County (Ala.) Commissioner. He spent his Saturday under a shade tree in the fire department parking lot broadcasting live, continually reminding those that might be listening to stop by the store and pick up supplies to donate at the Flomaton VFD.
A family from Illinois scanning the radio dial as they passed through town heard White’s plea and stopped to make their donation.
Shoreline Transportation has donated a 53-foot enclosed trailer for the supplies. They will transport the trailer to north Alabama on Monday. In the meantime, items such as water, Gatorade, crackers, cookies, other non-perishable food items, wipes, manual can openers, batteries and battery powered items like flashlights and radios are still being accepted at the Flomaton Volunteer Fire Department . Organizers ask that items be left outside the trailer next to the fire department on Highway 31 near Highway 113. Volunteers are checking for donations regularly through Monday morning and moving items into the trailer.

EREC Holds 70th Annual Meeting Saturday, Elects Trustees, Awards Scholarships
May 1, 2011
Escambia River Electric Cooperative’s 72nd Annual Meeting was held Saturday at Jay High School.
Marshall Diamond and Radford Locklin, Jr. were elected as cooperative trustees from Santa Rosa County and JD Powell was elected as an Escambia County trustee.
EREC also awarded two $4,000 scholarships to a graduating senior with a parent or guardian that is a member of the cooperative. The Escambia County scholarship winner was Michael Lowery from Tate High School, and the Santa Rosa winner was Whitney Walther from Jay High School.
This was EREC’s 14th year to offer scholarships to high school seniors. In the past, those capital credits issued by EREC that were unclaimed had to be turned over to the state. But state legislation now allows such funds to be deposited into a qualified, educational charity fund. The EREC membership voted to use these funds in the form of scholarships for graduating seniors in EREC’s service area.

Sheriff’s Office, DEA And ECUA Conduct Drug Round Up
May 1, 2011
The Escambia County Sheriff’s Office, the Emerald Coast Utilities Authority and Walgreens joined forces Saturday with the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) for a “Prescription Drug Roundup” at six Walgreens and four Sheriff’s precinct locations including Molino and Century.
The event was a one-day effort between local and federal law enforcement to provide the pubic a site to voluntarily surrender expired, unwanted, unused pharmaceutical controlled substances and other medications for destruction.
ECUA officials said pharmaceuticals are being discovered in our nation’s waters at very low concentrations, and to date, no evidence has been found on human health effects or in the environment. While the sources of these pharmaceuticals may be numerous, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has been studying unused pharmaceutical disposal practices. This study was prompted by the concern that potentially large amounts of pharmaceuticals are being flushed or disposed of down the drain, ultimately ending up in rivers, streams and coastal waters.
“Prescription drug abuse is not uncommon in our society and this is an opportunity for members of our community to get rid of their unwanted drugs before they fall into the hands of someone who may abuse or misuse them,” said Sheriff David Morgan.
