East Beats West In All Star Game Called Early After Fight

December 17, 2011

A battle between all-stars from a three county region ended with a bit of a brawl Friday night and the last four minutes of the Subway High School All-Star Series football game canceled.

After a touchdown and extra point attempt by the East team from Santa Rosa and Okaloosa counties, there was shoving, pushing and a few punches between the East and West teams. The incident reportedly stemmed from an end zone celebration by the East team after a touchdown — a practice that’s forbidden during the regular season but accepted and promoted by the organizers of  the All-Star game.

In the end, the East beat the West 27-14. The East has won the game four of the last five years.

For the West, Northview High School quarterback hit Shaquille Purifoy of Pine Forest for a touchdown. Sheets also threw a another touchdown pass to Eddie Matthews of Catholic High.

The West All-Star Team, representing Escambia County, included several North Escambia area players: Northview’s Brandon Sheets, Montaio Mitchell, Sean Knight, Brian Ross, and Austin Albritton; Tate’s Scott Ryals, Jacob Lasky, Cameron Covington and Hagan Mancuso;West Florida’s Kyle Faxlanger, Jalen Jones, Joe Jackson, Antwon Carter, Jorgen Stolsig, Jake Morris and Coach Harry Lees; and Pensacola High’s Dak Sims who lives in McDavid.

The East All-Star Team, representing Santa Rosa and Okaloosa counties, included local players Sammy Jones and Haden McCaskill from Jay High.

Just so ya know sheets wasn’t blamed in this one. No one from northview acted ugly as far as your criteria comment the boys I watched take the field were awesome. And yes I was also glad sheets didn’t clap at all

It’s sad to hear this happened. I’m a Tate parent and I hope the 4 that came from our school were not involved in this – I believe Coach Rigby has taught our guys sportsmandship and I would find it very sad if any of our 4 were involved. Maybe when they selected for this All Star team they should have selected players that not only enjoy the game but also have respect for it because it sounds like these guys have no respect for anybody but rather want to be Super Stars – there is a difference between Super Stars and All Stars. It’s really sad this happend.

This should have been an event for the players, parents, and respective coaches and schools of each player to be proud of. I’m very proud of my son, as he did not get caught up in this garbage; probably the way he was raised and coached. The blame for this mess lies with parents, coaches and most of all, the officials. Early on in the game, there were several personal fouls and this should have been addressed at that time. The “officials” let it get out of hand. You would think with the number of sponsors that were acquired for this that quality officials could have been provided through adequate compensation. The coaches really did nothing either. There were plenty of players on either team that would have loved to play and respect the game and each other at the same time, yet they continued to play these punks and said nothing to them after penalties. What a joke! I know that if my son had been involved in this, I would have dealt with him immediately. Also, there should be some type of character criteria involved in selecting these players. That would prevent a lot of this selfish junk on the field that most of these kids pick up from poor examples in their lives.

18 yr olds are not leaders, they are still kids, still needing guidance as we all do. They may can run a play. They are not taught good sportsmanship anymore by the parents, coaches, fans, heroes, etc.

We live in a world of me, me, me. Hey look at me, and when we don’t get our way, or we’re losing and look bad, we want to fight.

This whole exhibition was a waste of time, money, fuel, electricity, etc. All it showed is “Hey, look at my baby, and how good he is because he’s on the “All Star” team”. They didn’t look too good last night. Not blaming all of them, just a couple of little punks that need their butt kicked (mentored).
Values gone down the drain. Pitiful!

It is such a sad note that these players acted in this manner. They are suppose to be the leaders that our young youth look up to, admire, and want to replicate. I hope that they can look back on their actions and learn that this is not the way leaders should represent themselves. What ever happened to good sportsmanship??
