Deputy Stable After Being Shot, Suspect Also Shot

December 9, 2011

Two people, including an Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office deputy, were shot in Santa Rosa County Friday afternoon.

Investigator Steve Hough of Fort Walton Beach was working as part of the US Marshals Florida Regional Fugitive Task Force  serving a warrant in the 5400 block of Camille Gardens Circle near Milton when he was shot about 1:59 p.m. He was shot once in the face and twice in the leg when the suspect came out of a home shooting. He was listed in stable condition early Saturday at Sacred Heart Hospital.

The task force was  attempting to apprehend 34-year old David Christopher Lewis.  Lewis had active warrants for failure to appear, resisting an officer without violence, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon without intent to kill, display of a firearm during the commission of a felony, and possession of a weapon by a convicted felon. Lewis was known by officers to be violent, armed with firearm, and had made threats towards law enforcement.

Hough was driven by the Santa Rosa County Sheriff’s Office to Santa Rosa Medical Center then was airlifted to Sacred Heart Hospital by LifeFlight. Lewis was transported by ambulance to Sacred Heart.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating the officer involved shooting incident.  The Santa Rosa Sheriff’s Office is pursuing criminal charges for attempted murder and aggravated assault against Lewis.

This is the exact reason that these men and women should be recognized as heros. They and all other uniformed men are way underpaid. They will face fire, explosives, terrorist, guns or what ever the case may be to protect us and our freedom. Why cant our government see that these people are under paid? The sad part of this, they would die protecting the very ones responsible for pay cuts or freezing raises. We need to take care law enforcement, fire fighters and our military. There were wreathes laid at the graves of 3000 soldiers this morning at Barrancas National Cemetary, that had died protecting our freedom or survived war and died of other causes. Pensacola Naval Air Station should have been turning cars away because too many showed up to pay respects. Only several hundred showed, but you cant find parking at a parade. Dont get me wrong, i love entertaining my children. It just seems some of us have our priorities messed up. My new years resolution is to make a good impact on others lives, that they will always remember. God Bless America

Prayers to the officer and family. Governor Scott makes officers pay into their retirement, taking income out of each check. The officers in this area are the lowest paid in the State of Florida. Send a message to Scott, stop your madness, pay the officers for putting their lives on the line. Stop taking money from them to pay for mistakes made by the Legislature and the Governor.

Thanks William for the breaking news update. There has been word about a deputy being shot, but no news outlets had information on who or what agency. Praying for this officer’s recovery and his family.
