November 18, 2011

A Cantonment woman was charged after running a red light and causing a three-vehicle crash this morning on Highway 29 in Cantonment.

The accident happened about 7:30 a.m. at Highway 29 and Tate School Road. According to the Florida Highway Patrol, 20-year old Kayla E. Sparkman was southbound on Highway 29 when she failed to stop at a red light and collided with a Nissan Maxima driven by Katie M. Middleton, 64, of Pensacola, and a Kia Sorento driven by Carolyn C. Walker of Cantonment.

Sparkman’s 1999 Jeep Cherokee then overturned on the shoulder of Highway 29. She received minor injuries. Middle was transported to Sacred Heart Hospital with minor injuries. Walker received minor injuries while a passenger in her vehicle, 4-year old Essan Atiabi of Cantonment, was not injured.

Sparkman was charged with failure to stop at a traffic signal and not wearing a seat belt, according to the FHP.

My mom is recovering well. It was reported incorrectly I think mixed up with the accident on Lillian Hwy. I thank God for my mom’s safety while I am praying for the family of the fatality from yesterday. To the good Samaritan that called us immediately after the accident, we would like to thank you! I wish you would call is back so we can do so in person. God is so gracious to have spared all involved in this accident. It could have very well been much worse. The vehicles can be replaced… I think Mrs. Walker is doing well also, she spoke to my mom as they were both in the emergency room. Thanks for all the concern. God bless

Thank the Lord for minor injuries only. A lot of traffic on 29, in the morning and afternoon., HWY29/I10 east bound on ramp, the quick and the unlucky.

Tate Road and 29 has a stop light but the majority of the time it’s just flashing the yellow caution lights…..I know I hate going that way because it feels dangerous. My son goes to Tate, so it’s a route I often take.

Many stories have explained more accidents happen at red lights on 29 than at intersections whithout them.

Glad no one was seriously injured.

May be we need six or seven red lights hanging their. And the same at Old Palafox and nine mile rd. So maybe between texting and using the cell phone people will see it. Very lucky no one was hurt.

I think there was a fatality at a wreck on Lillian Hwy this morning, the radio may have gotten the two mixed up? Hope that helps!

  8. WOW... on November 18th, 2011 10:38 am

Wow, she didn’t have on seatbelt, the car overturned and she wasn’t injured? She is one blessed gal!

I bet the radio station has it confused with the one on Lillian Hwy, where a fatality did occur.

    >>A local radio station is reporting that there was a fataility in this wreck?

The story is now updated above. There were no fatalities in this crash, only minor injuries.

There was a wreck with a fatality on Lillian Highway this morning; we’ll have a story on that one once info is released by the FHP later today.

  10. Update? on November 18th, 2011 10:23 am

A local radio station is reporting that there was a fataility in this wreck? I saw the wreck and know that there were at least three cars involved. The lady who left in the ambulance was coherant and didn’t appear to have life threatening injuries… I hope the radio station is inaccurate! She is a sweet, sweet lady and a hard worker.
