Donald R. Harmon

November 21, 2011

Donald R. Harmon, of Pensacola passed away on November 18, 2011, at the age of 79, after a long struggle with diabetes.

Born in Dothan, his family moved to Brownsville and then settled in Cantonment when Donny was a boy. He gained two of his true passions from his parents. Eddie Lou Gant Harmon, his mother taught him to cook and appreciate food made with love. His father Ralph Harmon shared his mechanical skills and fixing up cars.

When the time came to serve in Korea, Don joined the Air Force, his brother Ralph Harmon joined the Navy and his brother Paul Harmon chose the Army and was killed in Pork Chop Hill. His sister Sarah Harmon Gordon helped the family at home.

Don met the love of his life, Dorothy Goff at Tate High School. Although it took three proposals, he won her heart. Dot and Don celebrated 50 happy years together this June. Dorothy went to heaven on August 15th to prepare for Don’s arrival.

Don’s career in Civil Service in the Public Works Department at the Naval Air Station brought many changes. He started on as an instrument mechanic, joined the IAM&AW union and rose to become it’s leader. His skills at labor negotiations were a gift. When Dot and Don were not working they enjoyed traveling to horse races with their friends, and I am sure will be watching the triple crown from heaven. They will also have their hands full following the escapades of their beloved only child.

Don is survived by his daughter, DeLisa Lou Harmon; sister and brother-in-law, Geri and Dave Butterfield; nieces, Kaye Harmon Spurlock, Monique Crabtree, nephew; Walter Gordon; great nephew Michael Moore, great niece Amy Spurlock Delay, and Gracie.

Visitation will be held at noon on Monday, November 21, 2011, at Harper-Morris Memorial Chapel with service immediately following at 1:00 p.m. Burial will follow at Bayview Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the AL-FL Office of American Diabetes Association , 5514 N. Davis Hwy, Suite C-111, Pensacola, FL 32503.
