Family Dollar Store Planned For Century

October 18, 2011

A new Family Dollar store is in the works for Century.

The 8,000  square foot discount retail store will be located at 9441 North Century Boulevard — that’s at the corner of North Century Boulevard and Green Street. The site was last occupied by Royal Pizza and Subs, which was destroyed by fire in July 2008. Prior to that, the property housed a barbecue restaurant.  The 1.22 acre lot is located just south of the Food Giant grocery store.

Family Dollar has not formerly announced a new Century store, and there’s no word yet on the number of jobs the business will provide, or when the business will open.

Monday night, the Century Town Council approved a variance to allow the Family Dollar to have 30 parking spaces rather than the 40 that would currently be required by code.

Debbie Nickles, a consultant for the Town of Century, said it would likely take about eight weeks for various agencies to approve the project.

Family Dollar currently operates 6,800 stores in 44 states. Other Family Dollar Stores in the North Escambia area are located in Davisville, Cantonment, Pensacola and Atmore.

Actually, to the person taling about a Target or walmart in Flomaton being laughable(cygie), in my opinion, it would be a good idea becuse people traveling on the interstate may not want to go all the way to pensacola or to brewton. it they are coming off the interstate or going that way they may remember something they forgot and stop! so I dont think it is that crazy of an idea. we need to start somewhere!

Target in Flomaton is more laughable than Wal Mart in Century. Neither town has the economic base to attract a big box store. With Pensacola 45 mins away, these two towns are destined to be a pass through, not a destination. Not trying to be negative, just honest.

Wow!!! I wonder if it will be a Super Family Dollar

  6. Just a Thought on October 20th, 2011 8:21 am

I was really hoping Wal-Mart would have put the ‘Super Store’ on the south end of Hwy. 113, but didn’t happen. Seemed to me that would have been a more central location. It would have still served Atmore, Flomaton, Century, Brewton, AND all the outlying areas, but it would have been right in the middle of all of them. Even better yet, if they had located it in Century, then, no sales tax on groceries.

There are super W/Ms in Bayminette and Andalusia. It would have been nice for us to get a little piece of that pie. I know a lot of readers don’t care for W/M, but I know several people who went to work there, and the new jobs created saved/greatly helped families. Some were able to keep their homes after their spouses were laid off at other jobs.

We should never “look a gift horse in the mouth”!!! One job is better than none.

Too bad some of our residents would rather sit home and collect a check than earn one. Our fine government really needs to revamp it’s ‘hand-out’ programs. I’m all for helping those who are unable to help themselves. The able-bodied folks need to get off their duffs and earn a living, no matter what the job is, pleasant or not. Why can’t the able-bodies do community-type or neighborhood services? Pick up trash beside the roadways, help the elderly to shop for groceries or clean/cut their yards, etc. Well, it’s just a thought, or more like wishful thinking!

I think a Family Dollar would be GREAT! You can hardly ever get around in the $ Generals for all the clutter…its like shopping @ Dirt Cheap! Also a Huddle/Waffle House would be AWESOME!! The idea of another grocery store is a smart idea as well! I would also LOVE to see something for kids and families to do such as a bowling alley..giving them something to do might just keep them off the streets, out of trouble and keep them from becoming FELONS!

    Well Said !

First off walmart is just a bigger version of the Dollar.More junk made in foreign countries. Next Lowes is closing a bun h of stores I suspect building 2 of the same kind of stores next to each other isn’t a good business plan somebody has to lose. Also you would eventually put the local grocery store out of business. Then we can consider that if the local population is struggling financially don’t we need industry for jobs more than a place to spend the money we don’t have on foreign junk?

This is good for the Century economic base. A Waffle House would be nice. Whataburger is the only 24/7 eatery in Century.

Doubt you’ll ever see a walmart, or target, in the Century / Flomaton area. However I’m sure you’ll see one of the two, if not both, somewhere near Atmore with the next 5 years.

  12. The Difference on October 18th, 2011 10:45 pm

Anyone who shops the dollar stores on the regular knows that there
is a big difference in the variety of products that Family Dollar sells
verse Dollar General. Each is geared differently. You have
to start with small business before you can land big business.

I think it’s great to have a “New” business built in Century! However…I think it would be wonderful to have a Target in the area! I think there’s plenty of room on top of the hill in Flomaton! I would much rather spend my money at Target than Wal-Mart.

  14. cygie on October 18th, 2011 9:30 pm

Does anybody honestly believe Walmart would open in Century? When you have one in Bay Minette, Brewton, and Ensley?

  15. Walnut Hill area resident on October 18th, 2011 9:28 pm

I just thank the Lord that there will be a few jobs availiable in our rural area during terrible economic times. Maybe those who don’t need a job need to stop and think about the thousands of people who cannot even find a job in our rural communities.
We just all need to go back to the old days and learn to appreciate more what we do have and welcome anything that would help our neighbor put food on their table or pay a bill.

Do you people who say we don’t need another dollar store so close to the other stores ever wonder why Home Depot is always next to Lowes? The companies knows more about marketing than any of us.I have yet to see a emppty Dollar General or Family Dollar building that has gone out of business.Competition is great for all stores. You get better service, and competitive prices.Congrats to Century!! Bring on the Waffle house.Forget Walmart!

  17. ashley on October 18th, 2011 12:24 pm

Build a Walmart NOT Dollar Store.

  18. bargain shopper on October 18th, 2011 12:17 pm

I love this! I have always liked Family Dollar better and either have to drive to Brewton or Atmore area to go. As far as the Walmart talk… I would rather have a grocery store to bring competition. It would not make since to bring a huge Walmart to the area because then it would put all the privately owned little businesses out of business. That would be a sad day. Another grocery store would instead bring more jobs and better deals on groceries because of the competition.

  19. Reality on October 18th, 2011 11:48 am

Century and flomation has one grocery store and you are crying walmart. That is not going to happen. The population is too low for walmart. Be thankful we got what we have. If century wasn’t on the hey 29 stretch it would be a lot worse off.

  20. 429SCJ on October 18th, 2011 10:58 am

It will mean a few more jobs. A little more tax revenue, A facility to be maintained. A little here, a little there. It all adds up. Hopefully the good lord will throw Century a large employer.

  21. christian mom on October 18th, 2011 10:52 am

Sure hate that all of you have such poor, negative attitudes. Any new business is
better than no business. Smile, God loves you in spite of yourselves!

  22. women of god on October 18th, 2011 9:55 am

Another dollar store how stupid is that. How about bringing in a super wal*mart in the area. We need more jobs not little jobs. Because Century nd Flomaton is a small town doesn’t mean we don’t need bigger business in our town.

  23. Big Bopper on October 18th, 2011 8:06 am

More crap made in China and you wonder where your money goes.

  24. no one special on October 18th, 2011 7:08 am

Yea! A new, ultra-modern Century Wal-Mart. Competition makes for better quality and lower prices. Bring it on!

  25. THE DOER on October 18th, 2011 5:52 am

Although we certainly need the industry/jobs around here, what is the benefit of yet another Dollar Store? We have two Dollar Generals within minutes of each other already (Century and Flomaton).
