Education Commissioner Recommends Tougher FCAT Scoring

October 27, 2011

Education Commissioner Gerard Robinson said Wednesday he will recommend new “cut” scores that will be used to determine a student’s score on the FCAT 2.0 and new Algebra 1 end-of-course assessment. .

These scores will be used to determine whether a student’s score is labeled at a Level One (the lowest) all the way up to Level Five (the highest). The new scores will be recommended for FCAT 2.0 Reading in grades 3-7 and in FCAT 2.0 in mathematics in grades 3-8 and in all Algebra 1 end-of-course exams. The remaining grades need more time for public input before recommending cut scores, Robinson said.

The State Board of Education will consider whether to approve the new scores at its December meeting.

“Our state has long-established high expectations for our students,” Robinson said in a statement. “As we move forward, it is vitally important that students are well prepared to move to the next level.”

As a retired teacher, I have always advocated that all members of the Legislature, the Governor and immediate staff, all cabinet members, and their top level staff be required to pass the highest FCAT level test each year before they can be paid. They should only have one try and take it under the same conditions students are required to undergo.

I agree. Everyone should google and download “Pathways to Prosperity”. It is a study by Harvard that compares the educational system in the U.S. to other countries that are now passing us by. A must read for every parent and grandparent. Should be a required read for everyone in Congress.

I wonder if these yahoos could pass FCAT!!! Do they have children that take FCAT? FCAT will be the death of our educational system. Teachers can no longer teach and give our children a well rounded education because their job depends on the outcome of one standardized test. RIDICULOUS!!!!! I wish these politicians would concentrate on something useful like creating jobs and allow teachers to do theirs which is to create well rounded, educated individuals, not little robots.
