ECAT Set To Strike Again

October 6, 2011

ECAT employees have voted to strike again, but so far there’s no date set for them to walk off the job.

Amalgamated Transit Union members voted for a strike after the union and Veolia Transportation, the company that operates Escambia County Area Transit for the county, were unable to reach an agreement.

ECAT held a one-day strike back on September 21, abruptly leaving about 8,000 bus riders without transportation.

As stated already fire them. The whole story is a joke: working conditions, unable to use the restroom, people they deal with. Working conditions-a/c, heat, out of the rain, out of the sun sitting down, pretty bad. Restroom breaks ha blow that smoke somewhere else, use the restroom while you get your scratch-off tickets. Every job out there will will eventually have someone say something mean, its life deal with it. As Everett stated they haven’t missed too many meals surely those of you complaining have been rude to the waitress getting those meals but you don’t see them crying for attention. Raises? Get in line with everyone else.

I disagree because I believe that ECAT drivers and the union know exactly how their strike impacts riders’ lives, and that’s why they are doing this – to force the company and the government to meet their demands while holding the public hostage. If they strike, fire them ALL!

Let them strike. This is a burden on the tax payer anyway. You cannot count maybe at the most 4 or 5 peple on the van or bus going down 29. It is a fact that you cannot buy shoes, blue jeans, shirts, dresses ECT! in the United States anymore and it is because of the Unions priced thier companys out of business and they moved out of the country. Do to the shape we are in this country the older people on Social Security and SSI have not had a raise in three to four years and yet we strike for more money. We bail out GM and reporters catch union personel on break smoking dope and drinking on break, drinking on break while building the new buildings to replace the twin towers in New York. Because they know if you are union they will protect the people whom pay the dues.

8,000 riders? Where do these numbers come from, ECAT or the union? Take the number of routes and buses run everyday and spread 8,000 riders across them. And if there were 200 bus trips, that would put 40 riders on each. I’ve never seen an ECAT bus with more than 10 people on it. So in other words, the numbers look inflated to maximize impact. Also take a look at how much this “service” is costing the taxpayers and consider that there are 457,000 people in the two county service area of Escambia and Santa Rosa, this 8,000 is then really an insignificant number. Let the drivers strike and then CLOSE THE MONEY PIT OF ECAT DOWN!

If we are transporting 8,000 riders a day do we really need as many buses as we have?
We need to do like reagan with the air traffic controllers when they struck and fire them all.

These drivers don’t realize what a one day strike does to disrupt the people who need the buses lives, their jobs and the already spiraling local ecomony.

Hopefully someone in the union will negotiate a health plan to include weight watchers and jenny craig. Some of picketing drivers on channel 3 looks like they haven’t missed too many meals.
