Yet Another Wreck Involving A School Bus In North Escambia Area

September 15, 2011

There was yet another wreck involving a school bus in the North Escambia area on Wednesday. None of the accidents have been the fault of the bus driver, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The FHP says 18-year old Alexander Groshong of Pensacola caused the accident on Kingsfield Road at North Palafox about 3:15 p.m.  A 2000 Ford Mustang driven by Andrew Prevatte, 16, and a 2004 school bus driven by Marilyn Brooks, 63, of Cantonment were stopped at a railroad crossing when Groshong slammed into the rear of the Mustang, pushing it into the school bus.

There were eight passengers on schools bus. None of the persons involved in the wreck were injured.

Groshong was charged with careless driving, according to the FHP.

There have been three other wrecks involving schools buses this school year in North Escambia:

On September 12, a 16-year old was charged after pulling into the path of a bus near Northview High School. On September 2, an Atmore man was charged after sideswiping a bus on South Highway 99 near Walnut Hill. And the night of September 8, a driver suffering a medical condition slammed into an empty bus parked at a private residence on Highway 4 in Bratt.

I am a bus driver for over 23 years. We do all we can to protect your children. My own grandchild rides my bus. I had a young lady run my stop sign the other morning. Thank goodness the children had just gotten own the bus. I blew my horn but I don’t think she ever saw me even with all my lights flashing. I would like to ask every one to please have their headlights own when it is foggy. It helps to see you. So many people don’t do this.

I travel up and down hwy 4 in bratt past Coopers ( yes, it will always be COOPERS to me too ) every am and afternoon, it is unreal the teenagers that pass me and are texting and speeding, the buses are always having an accident — not their fault but still an accident, our children are not safe anymore and something needs done about this. I agree they should make a no text while in motion feature, it should be the law and the phone should not work for texting while driving. I am so scared that these unresponsible drivers are going to hit our children while they are standing at the bus stop and it would proboly kill them, all over texting and not paying attention. TEENAGERS AND ADULTS THAT TEXT WHILE DRIVING IS IT REALLY WORTH SOMEONES LIFE TO ENTER THOSE WORDS INTO AN ELECTRONIC DEVICE !

Maybe the buses are too big to register in the mind and we need to start painting children’s images all over the outside. Surely they’ll notice the children.

Or maybe strobe lights all along the bottom

Parents cell phones are going to be the cause of many more accidents if we do not do something. I am a bus operator, this morning at the four-way stop at Cooper’s (it will always be Cooper’s for me), I was waiting for a truck to go, I started out and slammed on the brakes because the girl with long blonde hair, driving a small gray Saturn, followed the truck never even looking my way. She was on the cell phone, and yes I was in the bus, she never saw me, or heard my horn. It is a shame that a cell phone could be the cause of an accident or death.

This is not for the lady that had the medical condition and she is in my prayers. But it is a shame for the others to not see something as big as a school bus, I just pray that one day it’s not someone’s child they hit. I hope their fines are so big that if they were texting it makes them think twice before doing it again. Start using your heads people for what God intended you to do with it before it’s to late.

maybe lets change the color of the busses! ppl are so used to seeing big and yellow they dont pay attention. BTW I counted 7 motorists heading south on 97 this morning who had their cell phones up ON THE STEERING WHEEL ‘texting’!!!! they cant possibly be paying attention… with all this technology lets design a ‘text-in-motion’ LOCK! no doubt the teen who caused the wreck this morning was texting.

sniper for leaving the phone in the pocket

i am wondering if all of these bus accidents, even if its NOT the drivers fault, will make the counties insurance rates go up?

I suppose the one where the lady had the medical problem might be understandable. But here’s a clue for everyone else — they a big, bright and yellow. Bunches of flashing lights. Please avoid hitting them.
