Toy Gun Prompts School Bus Lockdown At Ransom Middle

September 29, 2011

A Ransom Middle School bus was put on lockdown Wednesday morning  after someone saw what turned out to be a toy gun.

A parent saw what she thought was a gun on the bus at the intersection of Tara Dawn Circle and Chippewa Way, prompting the lockdown and for the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office to meet the bus at the school campus.

The gun turned out to be a four-inch long toy gun.

The school notified parents with an automated phone call about the incident, and school officials said the incident will be handled internally.

The situation was handled appropriately by all personel. The students in the school were protected and the students on the bus involved were isolated. Local police responded in a timely manner and the school’s administration acted quickly to inform the parents.

cantonmentgurl “… the resource officer did nothing because it wouldn’t have been his responsibility.”

Where was the bus when this lockdown happened? I’ll clue you in. The bus had arrived at the school and was waiting to let its students off along with most of the other buses. Perhaps “cantonmentgurl” is right and “the resource officer did nothing…”

The incident happened on the bus and the bus was locked down. Unless resource officers from the school drive from the school to where an off campus incident takes place, the resource officer did nothing because it wouldn’t have been his responsibility.
I will say this about the automated phone: all that was said on the recoding was that an incident involving the bus had occurred and police were on the scene. No elaboration, no specifics. The automated system sucks!
We didn’t know what was going on, the school wouldn’t tell the parents and we had no way of knowing WHERE our kids were! It could’ve been a wreck or worse and the moments leading up to actually knowng are heart wrenching.

It is good to see that people are paying attention to what is going on around them and are calling 911 to report unusual activity. The article doesn’t say, but I’m sure it was the school’s resource officer who took care of this situation before the toy gun had the opportunity to get off the bus and into the school, and parents should thank Superintendent Thomas and the sheriff for having these officers working in their schools. Fortunately the gun turned out to be a toy and nobody was hurt, but then again it could be real next time.
