Driver Charged After Walnut Hill School Bus Wreck

September 2, 2011

An Atmore man is facing traffic charges after a Friday afternoon school bus wreck near Walnut Hill.

Authorities said  22-year old Jack Cunningham of Atmore was traveling South Highway 99 near Leandras Lane when he ran off the road, over-corrected and collided with Escambia County School bus 29-06 driven by 41-year old Tonia Allen of Molino.

Cunningham received minor injuries and refused transport to the hospital. Allen and the seven Ernest Ward Middle and Northview High school students on the bus were not injured. Damage to the bus was minor.

Cunningham was charged with failure to maintain a single lane and no proof of insurance, according to the FHP.

The Walnut Hill Station of Escambia Fire Rescue, Atmore Ambulance and the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office also responded to the crash.

The reason given why Jacks Branch rode did not need to be paved are widened was that the 5 deaths on that rode was because the people killed were all drunk. Well commissioner was this one drunk with the incident on county rode 99 with the school bus also drunk. But there are not enough votes in the north end to worry about anyway. My vote goes some one else that knows that all the people in District 5 should all have fair diceisions on money spent and used on paving our rodes.

JSCS, The only reason speed is a problem on HWY-97 is people seem to forget that the speed limit is 55! You wonder why people pass you going 90mph? It’s because you and 10 of your closest friends decide to drive bumper to bumper from Atmore to Molino going 20 under the speed limit!

The other points, I fully agree…

I am so glad no one was seriously hurt in this accident. I live on this road and have NO problem seeing how it could have happened.
    1. Road is in terrible condition
    2. Road is too narrow.
    3. Road has no shoulders.
    4. SPEED! People travel very fast on a road that is so substandard that replacement is the only answer.
    5. Think this will happen? Don’t hold your breath!
