Meteor? Strange Falling Object Reported Across Gulf Coast

September 26, 2011

People all across the Gulf Coast reported seeing a large, perhaps green object streaking through the skies about 7:20 p.m. Sunday.

So far, there’s no official word on exactly what the object was. NorthEscambia.com and other media outlets received sighting reports from around the area — Atmore, Walnut Hill, Cantonment, Mobile and Pensacola. WKRG TV reports that their meteorologist Johnathan Owens saw the object, which he described on his Facebook page as likely a small piece of an asteroid or a large meteor – and obviously completely burned up in the atmosphere”.

Did you see the object? Did you happen to get a picture? Email news@northescambia.com and let us know.

    REGARDING:
“has been reported as bigger than Jupiter ”

Whereas Jupiter contains “two and a half times the mass of all the other planets in our Solar System combined”

If its bigger than that, it’s truly impressive.

David expecting earth to thrown into interstellar space if so

Comet Elenin which has been reported as bigger than Jupiter was due to be aligned perfectly between our sun and Earth yesterday. It will be passing in front of us is what I have heard for the next week or so. Info is available if you google and on youtube. There was much misinformation and hype in the online communities about it and no media attention at all.

This object, yellow/red. Travelled from the east south east in to the western sky behind some low cumulus clouds. The time was approximily after 7pm. We were on a high floor balcony of Santa Rosa Dunes, Pensacola Beach. My impression is that it is a large meteor.

My husband and I were on the I-10 Bay bridge and saw the large ,very fast burning object. We thought it was a plane but no smoke or sound. It was so much brighter than a shooting star. It moved from the south to appear like it fell around 9 mile road. Quite amazing!

I saw it last night, I pointed at it and made a wish. Very amazing sight to see especially at 17 years old.

Since it was at 7:20 I guess it wasn’t the Iridium flare in the southeast around 7:45, it was magnitude -1, brighter than all the stars other than Sirius the dog star. There will be another Iridium flare tonight in the south southeast at 7:39, it will be magnitude -4, about as bright as Venus the evening and morning star at it’s brightest, altitude 52 degrees, azimuth 150 degrees from my location in Century. The bright meteors, or shooting stars that you see on average, are normally about the size of a pea.

Yes, we saw it while walking west on Via de Luna path toward Portofino Towers. After comparing it to photos of a meteor on the web, we concluded that’s what it was.

was driving south on interstate 65 about 7 miles from atmore, alabama at 7:20 pm on sept.25. a hugh bright object appeared traveling in a east to west direction on a 45 degree projectory angle. i have seen numerous shooting stars falling to earth and in my opinion this was not a shooting star or possibly a meteor. as i stated eariler i was in my car and this object was so big that when i first saw it falling and knew it would impact with the ground i automaticly braced myself and my hands gripped my steering wheel tightly waiting for the coming explosion that i knew was gonna wipe out a large section of mother earth. no explosion came which totally surprized me. maybe the first wave of e.t. have landed hope they like grits they did land in alabama after all. roll tide over e.t.

    I made a wish.

My husband and I saw it and live on Arthur Brown. It looked like it landed about at Arthur Brown and Pine Forest Roads intersection (that’s in Walnut Hill, not the Pensacola Pine Forest Road). It seemed very close to us. We thought we heard a very faint, muffled thud.

  21. BentStraight on September 26th, 2011 7:42 am

It was probably the Comet Elenin! (Google it if you haven’t heard yet)

  22. Kim B on September 26th, 2011 7:14 am

Yes I was walking in Byrneville with a couple of friends and we saw it and was trying to figure out what it could be. I even joked to them that it may be a UFO.

  23. Michelle on September 26th, 2011 5:48 am

I was coming back from Atmore about 7:30pm, when I saw a large whitle light falling to the right of me on Hwy 99. It was bright like a firework but no sparks. It lit up when it hit the ground, but I couldn’t see it in my mirrot.

That straight stretch before you get to the fox run place

  24. nobody on September 26th, 2011 2:59 am

Someone in Elberta, Alabama reported to the police department that they had seen an UFO about the same time…

  25. bill on September 26th, 2011 2:48 am

Nope, that satellite fell on the 23rd in the pacific.

  26. this guy on September 26th, 2011 2:28 am

the satellite has already fallen and it landed over in the pacific ocean…it was likely just a meteor just falling to earth, something that happens all of the time. It is just coincidence that this has happened around the same time as the satellite. jmo

  27. whit on September 26th, 2011 12:47 am

well you know they were saying that the old satelite or whatever was supposed to be falling down this weekend sometime so maybe it was that. and being that it had to come from all the way up there it was in flames, looking like a meteor.
