Local Unemployment Numbers Down Slightly

September 17, 2011

The latest job numbers released Friday showed a little good news for the three counties in the North Escambia area.

Escambia County’s unemployment rate decreased slightly from July to August, 10.5 to 10.4 percent. There were just 363 jobs gained  during the period, for a total Escambia County unemployment of 14,650 people. One year ago, unemployment in Escambia County was 12.4 percent.

Santa Rosa County unemployment also decreased— from 10.2 percent in July to 10.0  percent in August. Santa Rosa County gained 244 jobs during the period, with a total of 7,269  persons still unemployed. The year-ago unemployment rate in Santa Rosa County was 10.4 percent.

Escambia County, Alabama, had a half percentage point drop in unemployment — from 11.9 percent in July  to 11.4  percent in August. Escambia, Alabama gained 63  jobs during the month-long period, with 1,709  people out of work. The year-go unemployment rate was 11.0 percent.

Florida

Reinforcing the predictions of Florida economists who said the state’s road to recovery would be long and arduous, Florida’s jobless rate remained at 10.7 percent in August, unchanged from July but lower than a year ago.

The jobless rate last month in Florida also remained higher than the national average of 9.1 percent as the state continued to deal with a near dormant construction sector and a drop in government employment, the Agency for Workforce Innovation reported Friday.

“While the unemployment rate remains unchanged at 10.7 percent, Florida continues to grow private sector jobs,” said Mark Wilson, president and CEO of the Florida Chamber of Commerce. “Florida added nearly 10,000 new jobs last month and is on pace to add over 100,000 by the end of the year.”

Alabama

Alabama’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate, at 9.9 percent in August, was down from July’s rate of 10.0 percent and was above the year-ago rate of 9.1 percent.

I had a friend who started to get on unemployment. He had to show he looked for work a number of times each week. The problem was that the first place he checked to show he had tried, hired him and he never got unemployment payments. Sad.

Unemployment is just like welfare it makes people lazy and want free stuff free money is free money anyway you look at it now those people are getting foodstamps also and just getting fat they should be drug tested also. i know if he people on welfare are madde to look for jobs are be punished o yeah they also have to report to a advisor who looks at them like scum maybe people on unemployment should have to report to someone to show they are looking for any kind of work not just taking a vacation.

No some do not return to work. They retire early or they become homeless or they move away to some place that has some sort of a job. Some of them move overseas. I have several friends working in other countries now because there are no jobs here.

    REGARDING:
“Their unemployment benefits have run out, so it appears that they have returned to work.”

The federal government says they calculate unemployment not by unemployment benefits but from surveys of households determining how many are employed and how many are seeking employment.

It IS true that those not seeking employment are not treated as unemployed, but that makes sense too. For example people in school are often not working but are not considered unemployed. Spouses who aren’t seeking employment outside the home aren’t considered unemployed.

It would be irresponsible of the government, to release the actual adjusted figures. When the people find out the whole truth. I am curious, what point must the deficit reach, before the federal government ceases to be a legitimate governing body? I am glad we have Sheriff Morgan in office, because as the governing processes start to faulter, and things descend, we will have to depend on our local leadership to hold things togather.

Just look around and who can’t name people that have quit looking for jobs. They don’t collect unemployment so they don’t/aren’t even counted.

No way, that again is just a reflection of those that have been drawing unemployment and Their unemployment benefits have run out, so it appears that they have returned to work.
