Football Player Killed, 30 Injured When Bus Overturns Following Flomaton Game
September 3, 2011
A Southern Choctaw High School football player was killed and about 30 others were injured in an accident between the team’s bus and a car following a Friday night game at Flomaton High School.
Alabama troopers said 15-year old Otties William Brewer III of Silias, Alabama, died when the car and bus collided, overturning the bus onto its roof.
The accident happened about midnight in Coffeeville, about 20 miles from Southern Choctaw High. The driver of 1999 Nissan Maxima was also injured and airlifted to a Montgomery hospital. Alabama State Troopers said the driver of the Maxima, whose name has not been released, ran a stop sign at the intersection of U.S. Hwy. 84 and Alabama Hwy. 69 hitting the bus. The bus was being escorted by an Alabama State Trooper and a Choctaw County Sheriff’s deputy at the time of the crash, according to troopers.
Alabama troopers “continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding this crash,” according to a press release.
Southern Choctaw High School is in Gilbertown, Alabama, a small community of about 200 people near the Mississippi line – about 115 miles from Flomaton. The close-knit Gilbertown community gathered for a prayer service this morning.
The accident remains under investigation by Alabama State Troopers. More details will be posted as they become available.

I an a student of Southern Choctaw. I knew William personally and this accident has caused almost every person at our school to fall apart! People these days don’t know what drinking and driving can do! The bus driver of the bus is my teacher and she is the safest person while watchin over kids. She thinks of them as her own kids. Our school will never be te same because of a person who was drinking and driving. Please continue to keep the brewer family the bus driver and every other student that was on that bus in your prayers!!
My thoughts and prayers go out to everyone………………
Our thoughts and prayers are with the students and families and the community of Southern Choctaw…this is so tragic, may God be with you. From J.U. Blacksher in Uriah, AL
Prayers for everyone, but I feel a special sorrow for the bus driver. A bus driver knows WHAT can happen, but you hope it never does. Anyone who is driving a vehicle in which someone is injured feels somewhat responsible whether you are not. My prayers are especially with her this a.m.
God Bless the Children. It’s a sad accident to read/hear, but this goes to show that without GOD in our lives watching over us a putting us under his wings this could have been so much worse. I pray for the Brewer family and God knows your hurt, stay in pray and keep your loved ones close. To the SCHS INDIANS you all are a small group but you have big hearts with lots of Love to share, let your Love and light shine. GO BIG RED. God’s Speed
Such a great lost. God can and will heal our burden hearts. Pray together as a team, May God Bless the Brewer family today, tomorrow and forever. GO BIG RED!!!!!! INDIANS

This is such a tragic event. A prayer will be said. These kids are so precious and give so much for their school and town. No one can know the pain of these kids. I hope that their season can be saved somehow. The players can be their best shoulders to rest on.
Prayers from the panhandle to all… It is sorrowing to the heart when a young person is taken. Find peace in knowing he is walking with Jesus…
Our thoughts and prayers are with you all. May the hands of god wrap his everloving arms around the brewer family. Just know that he will carry you through. To SCHS football team stay strong even in the midst of all the pain.
From our family to yours.

My thoughts and prayers go out to the children and families involved. It’s so sad and such a tragedy. I really worry about our children on these school buses. It’s the law to wear a seat belt in a car to save lives but on our school buses our children do not have one to wear. It really concerns me.

Our heart felt condolences go out to Otis Brewer’s family and friends, as well as all the other parents, students, and faculty affected by this tradgedy. No one ever thinks something like this will happen in his or her town; however, I would like to say thanks to the Coffeeville and West Bend Fire Departments and their auxillary; Clarke County EMA Director, Roy Waite; the law enforcement officers; and the ambulance personal who all responded so promptly and efficiently. Such a terrible tragedy, and why all drivers must remember how crucial it is to be safe on the roads. Not saying it was because of bad driving, no details released on the cause, however it is a clear reminder of how safe we should be. Prayers for all involved, esp. the family of the player killed.

I am so sorry for your loss and pain. I have prayed that God will comfort you and see you through this painful time, and also comfort and heal the injured:
“Blessed be God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort;
“Who comforteth us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble, by the comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted of God.
“For as the sufferings of Christ abound in us, so our consolation also aboundeth by Christ.
