Escambia County (Ala.) School Superintendent William N. Hines announced Thursday that he’s stepping down.
Hines told the Escambia County (Ala.) School Board that he will retire by December 1 for financial reasons. He will retire with 34 years in the Escambia school system, six of those years as superintendent.
The school board can appoint an interim superintendent for up to 180 days as they begin the search for a replacement.

Escambia County school system has been blessed under the leadership of Billy Hines. Wishing him and Judy the best.
PEOPLE..ESCAMBIA COUNTY BOE IS DIRTY, whether you want to believe it or not.
I can name you a teacher right now in this school system, that has NOT been to college, no degree, but is a teacher and a coach..getting both salaries…
Who signed off on the hiring….yep, you guessed right, the superintendant!
The only thing dirty is our state legislation which has passed laws that would make state employees pay extra money into the retirement system if they don’t retire mid-school year. Thank you Mr. Hines and all educators who have worked long and hard to give our students the best.
People always think there’s a stink, so to speak! It is a public fact, that hasn’t come out yet I guess, that our wonderful state is changing the way employees and their retirements are handled! Therefore, unless Mr. Hines wants to give up about 15% of his income after the 1st of the year, he will have no choice but to retire! He will not be the only one! Any state education employee w/25 yrs of service in, will have no choice but to retire…unless they are loaded it won’t matter how much they make each year!
Why don’t you ask your Alabama legislature, they may be the ones dirtying the milk and he probably wont be the only educator doing so!!!!!!!
Why has someone always got to make a mountain out of a mole hill? Maybe he is just ready to retire while he is still young enough and in good health to enjoy retirement. His children are grown and out of the house. I don’t blame him for wanting to enjoy life for a while and I wish him and Judy the best of luck as they start this phase of their lives. I have known them both for quite some time and if anybody deserves to retire, I would definitely say it would be them. God Bless you both in the future and thank you for all the years you put in educating our children and being there for them.
you forgot to mention that his contract is not up until May 2012. Why step down now, why not wait five more months. Something in the milk ain’t clean.
