The Eagles (1-2)  jumped out to an 8-0 lead late in the first quarter with a 25-yard touchdown run from eight grader Jacob Dunsford. With a toss from quarterback Gavin Grant to Dunsford to Warren Suggs, the Eagles picked up two on the extra point attempt with 1:47 to go in the first.

Ernest Ward expanded their advantage with 3:09 to go in in the half with a 6o-yard touchdown run from seventh grader  Desmone Knight. A missed point after, and the Eagles were up 14-0.

Suggs was in the end zone again with 1.22 to go in the half, but the touchdown was called back on a holding penalty against the Eagles. Suggs got redemption with 23.5 seconds to go in the half with a 21-yard TD run. A good two-point conversion run from Zach Holland gave the Eagles a 22-0 lead headed into the half.

The Bulldogs managed a couple of touchdowns in the second half, as Ernest Ward added one for a 30-16 win for the Eagles

The Ernest Ward Middle School Eagles will host the Cougars of Escambia Academy next Tuesday, September 27, at 6 p.m. in Walnut Hill.

    Well said “Older Mom”

Some of You people really don’t get it. Mrs. Perry could have hired someone from Pensacola to teach PE and coach. She could have not hired a “football coach” and just hired a PE teacher who could not coach. She could just say enough football, no money, no help, no booster club members, no workers, all complainers. This is not “little league” football, thus is life. How many different people do you see p,suing in the college games? Not many, Several people said it well here: 1. No one asked you child to play, your child asked to play. 2. This is not NWE ball where every kid must get playing time, that’s when they learn the game, this is the step before high school, and only the best will play or the ones that really want to play. 3. Very easy to be a Monday Morning quarterback, go get your degree and become a coach, ten you can play who you want and get critized from people. 4. I heard a rumor that Mrs. Perry was going to close practices for ALL sports due to this junk snd I hope she does. 5. No I do not have a kid that plays ball but I have had a kid sit the bench and stand the sidelines, but guess what they were still a member of the TEAM. 6. How do you think these great coaches such as Carl Madison got to be good, by coaching. 7. You need to be parents, leave the coach to coaching and let the kids have a good time. Skerry if I offended anyone, but had to speak my peace. Eagles I am proun of you ALL!! CME

This comes from a mom who has 2 sons who have played sports, including football for youth programs (non-school sponsored), middle school football as well as high school football. The reason they played was because they wanted to, not because my husband or I forced them to. We also, in an effort to help them grow, did not interfer with how playing time, practice, plays, etc where handled for teams we were not coaches.

In youth, because parents have to help fund the programs, the coaches are required to allow all players to play every game. Different story when you get to school ball. If parents are having issues in middle school with how the sports are going, it’s only going to get rougher in high school. You may want to consider having your children play at youth sports or the Y or somewhere else where you can have more input.

I commend the coaches last week for working with the other team to play the younger players in a running 7 min clock prior to the game. This allowed all the younger players to have considerable playing time. Also, young players were able to play much more in the ‘regular’ game this past week, because the score was not so tight.

To help the team and the players in goal to have team spirit, I really recommend that you don’t sit around your dinner table with your children complaining about the team, coaches and/or school. Instead, encourage the players and coaches, and pray for their safety on the field..their well being…and that they have fun being on the team.

I’ve been at all the games, and can see improvement each game. This is an effort of all the coaches and players…and I say, even though I did not attend Ernest Ward…’Go Eagles’!

The way I look at it if they are paracticing…good thats great but if there not LET THEM! I dont want my son to quit, thats not even a solution and yes I THANK Jeremy Greenwell for coaching as well. What we(me) need to remember is he is a young coach and in learning mode and he will get it, it might take awhile but he will..Both OUR kids and JEREMY is in learning mode. I was thinking bad of him to but I have thought about it and he is JUST YOUNG and we(me) should give him a break. Im just going to sit back and let them learn from each other. My husband says it will make our son stronger! We all want our kids to play thats why they go to practice. I think that if he would try to just put them in at least one or two plays, when others makes mistakes…then alot of the moms would understand a little better why there kids dont get to play.

I have the perfect solution for the few of you that want to complain. Go get your degree then you can coach . Well said mom!! They do not have to be there,
    this is extra.

of course all of the kids get play time its called warming up. What child can’t be good at that. And I do agree that it’s nearly impossible for more than half of the team to not be giving their all at practice. Not to mention that if I’ve heard this from multiple players its obviously true. Nobody is putting anyone down they all did great, but if children can’t show their potential at practice because they don’t get much practice time how can tgey possibly earn their play time?

  12. 7th grade mom on September 21st, 2011 9:58 pm

Yes MOM I said a few practices to check things out…My son said for the last week they have been getting to practice more because they get to play 10 min before the game.I said nothing about 8th graders you said it. What I said was that that 10-15 kids cant, not be putting out at practice but I counted it was more like 15- 20 kids on the side lines.Im sure your son is a good player, I said nothing about him…So respect me back and say nothing about mine. I have nothing against the eigth graders playing but the parctices I went to It was just as my son said.So if they dont get to practice how does the coach know who is putting out!!!!

  15. MOM on September 21st, 2011 5:56 pm

I’M THERE EVERY DAY AND WATCH THEM AND THEY ALL GET TO PRACTICE I HAVE SEEN ALL OF THEM ON THE FIELD PLAYING SO LET ME SAY IT AGAIN IF YOU DONT WANT YOUR KID TO PLAY TAKE HIM OFF THE TEAM DONT PUT DOWN THE 8TH GRADERS BECAUSE YOUR SON CANT PLAY AS GOOD AS THEM THEY ALL DID A GOOD JOB NOT JUST THE 8TH GRADERS I WAS THERE TODAY AND DID NOT SEE ANY MOM WATCHING THE WHOLE TIME

  16. 7th grader mom on September 21st, 2011 4:41 pm

So MOM you been to these practices… I have and let me tell ya, you have to get a chance to practice. My son sits on the sidelines waiting to be put out for practice. He only hits the field as much as he gets to play at the game. So unless you go to these practices and see for yourself which I DID. Speak what you know because I thought that the boys were exagerating until I went to few practices. The boys did do great, not knocking there win…GO EAGLES! Oh yea by the way we have had three games and I only see a few changing in and out of the kids. some playing offence and defence the same ones PLAY…so your telling me around 10-15 boys isnt doing good at practice, just doesnt pan out:(

  17. unknown on September 21st, 2011 4:34 pm
