Woman Refuses To Get Out Of Catfish Pond

August 18, 2011

Deputies spent over an hour Wednesday afternoon trying to coax a woman out of a Walnut Hill catfish pond.

A married couple was reportedly arguing beside Pine Forest Road just north of Arthur Brown Road just before 4 p.m. That’s when, according to witnesses, the woman swam out into the middle of a catfish pond and refused to come back to shore.

The Escambia County Sheriff’s Office responded and attempted to convince the woman to swim back to shore. She refused, and deputies obtained a boat and pulled the woman from the pond without any injuries.

The woman was transported to West Florida Hospital for evaluation.

Sounds like she was high on something…maybe the little green geek goblins were after her….

She must have meant something to her husband, otherwise he would have left her there. She most likely had the car keys in her pocket. I would rather be lonely than sorry.

  3. bwayne on August 20th, 2011 1:22 am

The article stated the couple had been arguing. Perhaps she was physically threatened and scared of her husband. Perhaps he didn’t know how to swim, and she felt safer out there. Perhaps by the time the police showed up, she was just too embarrassed to act accordingly……Or maybe she was just drunk and wasn’t thinking straight. People do weird things when drinking. There are a lot of “perhaps” in this instance.

I agree with “fed up”…and i too can relate to her….the nagging husband would of made me do the dame thing gators and all :)

    @ needmoreinfo
If you want compassion you shouldn’t be i’n the middle of a catfish pond an refuse to come out an make deputies come fish you out an make the news.

  7. Anna on August 19th, 2011 11:22 am

maybe she just wanted to try a little”Hillbilly Hand Fishing” !!!! Lol.

  8. needmoreinfo on August 19th, 2011 10:38 am

You really need all of the facts before you judge or make fun of the people in this situation. There’s alot more to this than anyone knows. Have a little compassion people!

she might have been trying to start a baptism service “”come on in the waters fine..”" couldnt resist ….

This story brings about so many questions. Was she the catch of the day? Wouldn’t humans fall under “catch and relese” guidelines? How much of a pain in the rear end is a guy that would make someone wade out into a pond just to get away from him? How bad is she that he didn’t go in after her himself? Was she trying to determine if she was battered or fried? Did they tag her when she got in the boat? Was a game warden on hand to make sure it was a legal catch? Was the police that responded first really in a hurry to get there knowing it is someone throwing an I’ll hold my breath style temper tamtrum? Would YOU be in a hurry? This story has it ALL! Drama, comedy, action, suspense, and FISHING! Really, could you make up a better story than this?

David Huie Green…..your post always add great factual information, and just the right amount of humor! I love it! I always see things in a different perspective after reading them. THANKS!

  13. Whatever on August 18th, 2011 7:59 pm

How deep was the pond anyway? Aren’t they only 4 feet deep? She probably could walk out if she wanted to.

  14. bleeding blue and orange on August 18th, 2011 5:46 pm

I would hate to hook that one! I don’t think I would have that much cash on me fishing. Unless they would cut you a break on the pounds.

  15. Patriot on August 18th, 2011 4:43 pm

Here’s the problem; once a Deputy arrives, he or she has a lot of liability. If there is ANY question about the mental state of the individual, they are going to probably be Baker Acted.
If you don’t want to risk your loved one being Baker Acted, don’t call the law unless it is absolutely necessary.

  16. David Huie Green on August 18th, 2011 4:42 pm

That should come out in the evaluation. Lots of folks are certifiably insane but not believed dangerous to themselves or others. (They walk among us, or we walk among you, depending.) That would also be part of such an evaluation.

Folks are constantly being sued by the survivors who say, “Well, you could clearly see he was disturbed but you did noting to help.” I read of one recently where someone swam out to sea as all kinds of emergency response personnel just watched. Somebody had decided they shouldn’t interfere. All the rest just went along as she died.

I just don’t see any good reason not to check.

If she’s okay, it would be determined.
If she had a tumor, it would be determined.
If she had some other harmful problem, it would be determined.

    David for determination
    and safety over sorrow

  17. Maybe on August 18th, 2011 4:29 pm

    See what I mean….what I mean…what I mean, David!!!

I just think the better part of the world more than likely feels like doing “something” out of the ordinary at least once in their life out of frustration or for whatever reason…..and I don’t mean anything necessarily evil…..

  18. David Huie Green on August 18th, 2011 3:44 pm

    REGARDING:
“If she needs an “evaluation” then I’d have to say that the better part of the world needs an evaluation”

That statement would make sense if the better part of the world were doing the same thing. It isn’t.

David applying logic to the illogical
but agreeing others might need evaluation
maybe even me even me even me even me

  19. Elizabeth on August 18th, 2011 3:42 pm

    @whitepunknotondope
Those were my exact thoughts! With all these headlines about brain-eating amoebas, I wouldn’t think about swimming in a pond.

  20. Maybe on August 18th, 2011 3:31 pm

Maybe the pond was the first place to be alone for a little while..I still disagree even on the mental evaluation….at least she didn’t “go postal” and try to take someone else down (into the pond with her)….
If she needs an “evaluation” then I’d have to say that the better part of the world needs an evaluation….
I saw a fellow once at a Boston Bruins game back in the 60’s. He was all alone up in the pigeon section of the stadium and was cussing like a Belgian sailor. The person I was with explained that this guy used to be quiet, reserved, never said a word, and his doctor told him if he didn’t start”venting” he was going to die of a heart attack. So…guess it’s all about the situation.
And actually, there has been warnings of pretty much every disaster that has happened since the Titanic going forward including the bombing of Pearl Harbor, John Kennedy assassination, Oklahoma bombing to Twin Towers….and all those warnings went unheeded…..
Jumping in a pond out of frustration (maybe) is not necessarily too nuts.

  23. whitepunknotondope on August 18th, 2011 3:00 pm

She’d better be worried about brain-eating amoebas!

  24. 429SCJ on August 18th, 2011 2:20 pm

Jerry you are absolutely right, when I travel to Atmore via 99A & Roackaway Creek road, I pass Auther Brown and Pine Forest Rd.. I guess I was out to breakfast on that one.

  25. get off that soapbox on August 18th, 2011 2:14 pm

She would eventually get tired, hungry or it would get dark…..or a snake could come slithering by…..she would of gotten out on her own one way or the other! Dont know about calling the sheriff’s department. I belive I would of let her come out when she got tired of it.

  26. Fed Up on August 18th, 2011 1:41 pm

Amen Maybe! This woman probably had all she could take from the nagging of her husband and went to swimming. If this husband was anything like my ex-husband I would have swam to the middle too, alligators and all!! Hope she is okay!

  27. David Huie Green on August 18th, 2011 1:37 pm

    REGARDING:
“What she did does not mean she is crazy or needs to have the Baker Act ”

Nonetheless, it IS abnormal behavior and worthy of a mental evaluation lest she have a problem which will hurt her and others.

Sometimes defending irrational behavior is unreasonable since it can lead to assorted people being hurt. Remember Seung-Hui Cho at Virginia Tech? Everyone who saw him knew he was nuts but assorted privacy laws had university officials scared to warn the people he might harm or even notify them once he started killing them.

The lady in the lake isn’t likely to be that loopy, but it’s worth looking into lest she be.

I knew a fellow once who would just spew out profanity for no known reason. He didn’t used to be that way but folks were scared to say anything or even get around him. Finally he went to a doctor because he was also losing the ability to read even though he still had 20-20 vision. It turned out he had a brain tumor causing both problems. If someone had done anything sooner, he might have been saved.

    Again, evaluation is worth doing.

    David for caution and catfish

  28. jeeperman on August 18th, 2011 12:30 pm

Based on the info in the article, one could assume that the owner of the pond could not swim into the middle of his catfish pond and stay ther either.

  29. Jerry A on August 18th, 2011 12:01 pm

@ 429SCJ: I am by no means a Stephen Hawking, however just a quick search of mapquest.com shows Pine Forest Rd in Walnut Hill from Hwy 99A going in a northerly direction then northeast and ends at 97A.

    No rocket science here!

  30. Maybe on August 18th, 2011 11:32 am

Maybe she was just “fed up” with situation on shore and the pond was a little solace. What she did does not mean she is crazy or needs to have the Baker Act or have an alligator chase her out of the pond. Geeeeseee …

  31. jcellops on August 18th, 2011 10:00 am

northend fan and resident- i agree thoroughly- her irradict behavior was a sure sign that she needed a mental evaluation- you have good insight.

  32. mom on August 18th, 2011 9:49 am

Couldn’t the husband call a friend to get in a boat an pull her in? Once you call the law, they have to act. This seemed so minor. Leave her there. Eventually she will come out. It just took the law an hour.

  33. Northend Fan on August 18th, 2011 9:38 am

I just hope that the people on this post never have to deal with someone getting a severe brain infection and have to deal with a person that has the symptons of dementia or confusion. There are a lot of people that are ignorant of this disease. Stupid, alzheimers is stupid, I think not. It is easy to hide behind internet names and trash people. I will pray for you.

  34. Resident on August 18th, 2011 9:32 am

I would also think the sheriff’s office was involved because she might have been a danger to herself. Transported to West Florida can often men Baker acted — mental help.

It’s not normal to swim in catfish pond for an hour or more and disobey the lawful orders of deputies telling you to get out of the farmer’s pond. Plus, catfish ponds are GROSS. Nobody in their right mind swims in one.

  35. Frank on August 18th, 2011 9:24 am

Answer Levi, Why the sherriff office involved?
That Farmer is a tax payer as well…The next time someone sets in the middle of your living room or Garden even, ask yourself if you need to call the Law? …Just saying :p)

  36. Levi on August 18th, 2011 9:07 am

Can someone explain to me why this was a matter that needed to involve the Sherrif department and tax dollars wasted? All because a grown woman wanted to act childish?

It would have been funny to let an aligator loose in the pond and see if she would come out.

  39. 1234 on August 18th, 2011 8:11 am

There is a Pine Forest Road in Walnut Hill. This is the one they are referring to, not the Pensacola one.

  40. Ifish4 on August 18th, 2011 8:08 am

@429SCJ, I can explain it to you, the road that runs from Atmore Hwy (SR 97) just south of CR 4 to Arthur Brown road, is Pine Forest road. You must be thinking about the Pine Forest road that runs from Kingsfield road to Mobile Hwy.

  41. 429SCJ on August 18th, 2011 5:39 am

A Walnut Hill catfish pond, off Pine Forest road.? I think we will need Stephen Hawking to explain that one, and Rod Serling to explaine her.
