North Escambia Firefighters Among Those That Responded To Massive Ship Fire

August 19, 2011

Firefighters from as far away as Walnut Hill and Century were called upon to battle a fire in a large fishing boat at Patti Shipyard on Bayou Chico.

Smoke could been seen from miles Thursday afternoon from the Dona Martita, a 168-foot, four-story high fishing boat that was undergoing construction in Pensacola for planned use in Alaska.

Dozens of firefighters from numerous departments initially responded to the blaze about 5 p.m. Additional manpower from the Pensacola Fire Department, several stations of Escambia Fire Rescue, the Gulf Breeze Fire Department, Saufley Field and the Pensacola Naval Air Station were soon called in to help.

About 9:40 p.m. the Century, Walnut Hill, McDavid and Molino stations of Escambia Fire Rescue were dispatched to provide additional manpower.

Three firefighters were reported to be injured as of late Thursday night. One reportedly had minor burns while two suffered heat exhaustion.

There was no word on the cause of the fire.

It certainly should have been dealt with as this does not look so good
for our ability to do this at our ship yard. The owner of this ship is
probably not very happy right now with pensacola. Somebody has
to pay for this mess, to clean it up, repair it, and I guess we pay for
    the firefighters.

I hope our fire fighters who were injured are fine this morning and will be
    fit to work again..

now that they have put water into the vessel a hazmat team will have to come and dewater it and dispose of it properly…..(not pumping into the bayou)..just a thought

Spent the first 27 years of my life around that shipyard. I can tell u from experience its NOT because the safety protocol’s arent up to date and in place. It’s because somebody didn’t follow them. And I can also tell u from experience, It’s been dealt with.

This fire is probably due to someone taking shortcuts in safety while welding. Shipyard work is a dangerous business with all of the cutting and welding that goes on. Vessels are full of flammable hazards from fuel and lube oil storage tanks, engine spaces, to storerooms full of supplies. It is imperative that good house keeping and safe hot work practices are to be strictly followed in the effort to prevent shipboard fires like this one.
