Overcoming Handicaps: Molino Artist Instructs Century Care Residents

August 17, 2011

A physical handicap should not stand in the way of art — that’s what residents of the Century Care Center learned Tuesday from a Molino artist.

Shawn Rudd, 38, suffers from muscular dystrophy. He can barely left his right arm without the assistance of his left. Unable to reach up to a traditional easel, he paints with his canvas flat on a table.

“The residents can’t use the ‘I can’t do that, I’m handicapped excuse’,” Activities Director Mae Hildreth said of Rudd’s new painting class offered to Century Care Center residents each month.

Tuesday, residents learned about watercolor technique from Rudd, adding color to black and white sketches he prepared.

“If it goes as well as I believe it will, we will have a gala art show in a few months,” Hildreth said.

Shawn was eager to do the classes. We will be doing it once a month. He has always been a great guy with a heart of gold. I’ve known him since he was young.
The residents are still talking about it. I like it when they can do something that makes them feel pride and accomplishment. It gives me a warm fuzzy feeling. We have many wonderful volunteers that share their time and talents. I am thankful to them all, and thanks William for letting the community know that this is a special place. Thanks for the pats on the back, and yes, I do love my job.

YES! That’s what I like about Mae~ she’s always looking for new ideas and ways to create interest, entertain and keep them and their minds busy~what you don’t use, you lose! She is always looking for new people and gives locals a chance to share their talents. CCC you are blessed to have someone who loves her job and has a heart for the elderly…great job, Mae! <3

Thank you August, but I’m far from famous :)

Thank you so much Janice, I’ve said it many times and I’ll say it again. I can name a laundry list of artists locally that just blows my mind with their skills. I enjoy art, and I enjoy painting. Every artist has someone else that inspires them, and gives them a goal to achieve.

I really did enjoy showing our elderly that anyone can paint and create something beautiful. Most already knew how to paint, and showed me a few things. Some even discussed Van Gogh, Rembrandt, etc. They’ve had an Andy Warhol day at the center in the past. It was just a good day, and I’ll look forward to this every month.

Century Care is an awesome facility, Mae has inspired me in so many positive ways, the activities staff, the CNA’s, the nurses, the kitchen department and their awesome food.

Thank you William, you do a great job for our community as well!
