Bratt ‘Prowler’ Located Hours After Manhunt

August 4, 2011

The focus of an early Thursday morning manhunt in Bratt has been located by Escambia County deputies, about three hours after they called off a formal search.

The Escambia County Sheriff’s Office responded to Rigby Road off West Highway 4 just before 5 a.m. for a reported prowler. One resident told deputies that she saw a man in her yard. A secondĀ  resident told deputies he had made contact with the man who told him that he was out of gas.

Deputies located what was believed to be the man’s truck nearby, but it did not appear to be out of gas.

A perimeter was established and an Escambia County Sheriff’s Office K-9 unit responded. The search was called off about 7 a.m. without locating the suspect.

About 10 a.m., several residents in the area called the Sheriff’s Office to report seeing the man. Deputies located him a short time later at a home on Highway 4. The man told deputies that he ran out of gas and went to several houses seeking help. He said he fled when he saw deputies in the early morning hours because he thought he was drunk andĀ  he might be arrested for DUI.

No charges have been filed in the incident.

I just want to tell everyone on Still Rd. That they don’t have to worry about the man whom they see walking without a shirt every morning because he is here visiting his mother …..He is not here to harm anyone…..he is walking to try to lose weight……..and by the way he was born and raised right here on Still Rd….he is not a stranger to this area by any means.

  7. Gerri on August 6th, 2011 7:39 am

Wish they had something that they could have held him on, as last night, assuming it was the same individual, someone started tapping on our windows and shinning a flashlight in them last night around 11:00.

Another good reason for a neighborhood watch group in the area! Form one, call David Craig at 850-554-1401 for information. Or join the Mid County Neighborhood Watch that meets at Aldersgate Church the 4th Monday of every month at 6:30pm. Everyone is welcome!

Somebody call Elizabeth & Troy. They’ll take care of the problem… Yes, that was a Swamp People reference.

I also seen a man (without a shirt) walking north on Still Road this morning at 8:30 am. I did not recognize this man.

I noticed this same truck (if AL tag) parked on side of the road south of Still Bridge about 11:30 pm one night. I believe the date was July 14th. Red S-10 Chevrolet, grey interior. I remember the window was down and I could see the gray head rest (same as in the above picture). I circled back and seen it was an AL tag. A few days later we had someone come up to our home at 2:00 am wanting gas. I know this was an excuse because who in their right mind would go out that time of the morning without gas. So this is not the first time this character has been in our area. I am a very observant neighbor. I do watch out for my neighbors and their homes.

  13. On-scene @ capture on August 4th, 2011 11:04 pm

Head’s up Residents of this area!!!!!!!
This perp “appeared” 9:30ish out of the acres of woods near the same house (Rigby Rd) he was in the yard of @ 5am. He literally popped out of the woods directly in front of my cousin who was weedeating near the woodline. Needless to say cuz was pretty startled! Perp said he needed to get out of there & wanted a ride.
Owner of the residence cuz & I were working for came over & spoke with perp who would not give his name when asked & of course he got reported. He fled back into the woods when owner told him he called the sheriff’s. A few min later he came out of the woods into the adjacent field a few hundred yards farther behind the house.
When perp spotted the sheriff’s SUV on Still Rd heading his way he paused a few seconds then ran! He was found moments later hiding under the carport of the house across the field.
This guy was NOT out of gas! Nothing he did or said was were logical actions of a stranded motorist!
Really….If this perp fled @ 5am because he thought he was drunk …did he think he was still drunk approx 5 hrs later… because he fled from the cop again that time! Nothing he said or did were the actions of a stranded motorist nor a drunk man!
You may also like to know that approx 1 or 2hrs after “Thing 1″ was apprehended ` we saw a different guy…similarly dressed & also tatooed (like the perp)…shirtless…with a backpack. This guy was walking south down Still Rd. Owner drove down to check him out & he just threw his hand up like he was all good but he wouldn’t hold eye contact & turned his head away following the wave off. Owner said he never seen him before that he was also a stranger in the area.
He was also reported but we never got word back from the deputy whether he was even located much less his “reason” for being in the area.
Don’t know if “Thing 1″ & “Thing 2″ were connected in any way? It seems TOO coincidental to me!
Just want all you residents of that area to keep a watch out for youselves and your neighbors. This entire episode is too fishy to be innocent!

I live on W. Hwy 4 and had my locking gas cap broken into 2 weeks ago, but no gas was taken. I live near the highway so I figured the perpetrator must have gotten scared off and left.

Hmm wrote “wonder if he had anything to do with the robbery just reported (at 4:30) off rigby rd?”

Just to clarify, it was a reported burglary, not a robbery. We will be following up.

  16. Resident on August 4th, 2011 5:56 pm

Just saying…… he could go up to the wrong house and not be able to walk away.

  17. Hmm on August 4th, 2011 5:37 pm

wonder if he had anything to do with the robbery just reported (at 4:30) off rigby rd?? he has been “prowling” the area for about a month. what does he have to do to be charged with a crime. we should nip this in the bud before he, or someone else, gets seriously hurt.

  18. KAYE on August 4th, 2011 5:17 pm

WE HAD A MAN COME KNOCKING ON OUR DOOR AROUND 2 OCLOCK IN THE MORNING. WE DIDNT ANSWER IT HE HAD A SMALL GAS CAN BUT YOU NEVER KNOW IF ITS FOR REAL ARE NOT SO WE DONT OPEN DOOR

  19. sandra on August 4th, 2011 3:38 pm

By the looks of his truck fuel is the least of his problems.

  20. William on August 4th, 2011 2:36 pm

The man’s name is not being released because he was not charged with any crime.

  21. 429SCJ on August 4th, 2011 2:13 pm

If one is going to creep around the wee small hours, they should have adequate fuel and avoid trespassing and excessive noise. He seems a little odd to me.

  22. Nun ur businezz on August 4th, 2011 2:10 pm

So who is the man who had the truck it looks very familiar to me y won’t the cops give a name or picture of the suspect??

  23. EMD on August 4th, 2011 1:20 pm

Betcha he is looking for copper.

  24. Janet on August 4th, 2011 12:44 pm

I have also seen this truck or one just like it parked near an abandoned house on Hwy 4

  25. name please? on August 4th, 2011 12:20 pm

when will we get a name? i don’t want this guy around my neighborhood, and if he is a name and pic would be grand! got to keep the family safe from screw tops like this!!

  26. REF on August 4th, 2011 12:14 pm

I hope they get to the bottom of it sounds like a bunch of unknown with this story..sooner or later if he is prowling an poking around houses all hours of the night they will be identifying his body cause he will cross the wrong yard eventually..

  27. JustSaying on August 4th, 2011 11:56 am

I saw this truck on the side of the road south 29 past pine barren with the man beside it seemed to be broke down yesterday wednesday before 10am

  28. Bratt Mom on August 4th, 2011 11:30 am

This is werid my neighbor saw a man last week in his yard walking around on Pine Barren Rd at around 12:00am when he got up to find that he had parked his truck just up the hill and he left and went just up the rd and parked and started walking in another neighbors yard..

  29. Name (required) on August 4th, 2011 11:06 am

This one sounds very fishy to me.

First, what was he really doing that admitting to DUI was his best plan to throw them off the scent?

Second, 4am, out of gas… what to do? Oh, I will go wake people up and ask help….
    … seems unlikely.

  30. David Huie Green on August 4th, 2011 8:52 am

    may not be his truck

  31. The DOER on August 4th, 2011 7:28 am

If they have found what they believe to be the man’s truck, then they should have his identity????
