Century Won’t Regulate Guns Or Ammo

August 16, 2011

The Town of Century is considering an ordinance that will ensure the town won’t regulate guns or ammunition in any manner, in accordance with a new state law.

The new ordinance under consideration by the town council would eliminate anything in Century’s Code of Ordinances  that regulates firearms or ammunition in any manner. A new Florida law passed last legislative session and  dubbed the “Joe Carlucci Uniform Firearms Act” makes gun control the state’s domain.

Town Attorney  Matt Dannheisser said there were no laws currently on the books in Century that regulated guns, according to Council President Ann Brooks, so the ordinance is a formality to ensure the town complies with the new state law.

All state regulations regarding firearms and ammunition will remain in effect in Century.

The state law provides potential stiff penalties for those in violation — including civil fines up to $5,000 for elected or appointed government officials and immediate termination of government employees responsible for a willful violation. It also allows person or organizations that believe a violation of the state law adversely affected them to sue for damages up to $100,000.

Century should establish a town militia. The city could apply for federal funds and get the Old White Building overhauled and use it for an armory/training center. This is not a joke!

Hooray, the town of Century won’t regulate guns or ammunition in any manner, in accordance with a new state law. All towns and states should follow this example. In addition the State should follow Vermont.

God and guns, the American way and proud of it.

jeeperman and others are on track. What is the legal and moral obligation of the Town of Century in their effort to enact an ordinance that simply states that its town officials must follow the law….hmmmm, in absence of this ordinance is it assumed otherwise?

(laughs) Put this with the $500 to “advertise the town’s natural gas” and it makes you wonder if it’s election time.

Commendations to Century for ensuring it is in compliance with Florida law. The new state law was unfortunately necessary because so many localities were not obeying state law in the absence of penalties.

Sara, our Second Amendment rights, like all of our other rights enumerated in the Bill of Rights, have absolutely nothing to do with partisan politics. You are being played for a fool if you believe otherwise.

“This is great news. Parents secure those weapons”

If it takes a newspaper article about state and local law to get a parent to keep their weapons out of childrens hands, they shouldn’t have guns to begin with.

Kudos to the Century city council for proactively enacting an ordinance that will protect the city from possible future litigation. Municipalities and counties throughout the state should follow their lead.

Please explain why it is necessary to expend the time and dollars to contruct, publish a legal notice and then vote on such an ordinance which merely acknowledges what only the state can regulate?
Does Century have similar ordinances on other matters that acknowledge that only the state can regulate?
Remember taxpayers, your paying the Town Attorney big money to create this un-neccessary ordinance.

It’s been the state law that they cannot make any restrictions beyond what the state has but it’s only now that the town is passing this law?

Good thing the state put teeth into that law. It’s a shame towns don’t feel they are required to follow laws otherwise.
