Century To ‘Support” NHS Football With $450 Newspaper Ad, $50 To Quarterback Club

August 16, 2011

The Town of Century voted Monday night to “support” Northview High School football by spending hundreds to purchase an ad in a Flomaton newspaper, while spending just $50 with the Northview Quarterback Club.

The council voted 5-0 to purchase a $450 full page ad that will be published one time in the Tri-City Ledger, a weekly newspaper.

The council also voted 5-0 to purchase a $50 quarter page ad in the Northview High School Football Program. The football program is distributed at every home Northview game, and all proceeds from the football program support the Northview football team through the school’s Quarterback Club.

The ads will be funded out of the town’s gas department budget.

    >>>i’ve noticed the ledger doesn’t cover nhs much, then i’ve also noticed esc.com doesn’t cover flomaton high. the last time i posted about that, my post was removed. hmmm?

There is a another post below from your email address that was approved four days ago about “I’m against it…..just trying to buy votes with tax payer money”.

The Tri-City Ledger is Flomaton, Century and Jay, obviously including Northview since they sold the ad.

NorthEscambia.com coverage area is just that — North Escambia in northern Escambia County, Florida — Cantonment north to the Alabama line. We certainly appreciate and love our readers in Flomaton, and we do cover some Flomaton stories. As far as football goes, we run a Flomaton score and summary after every game and sometimes photos. But they are not in our primary coverage area. (We still love the ‘Canes, just to be clear.)

We like to think we cover our coverage area well, and we appreciate each one of the millions of page views we get each week.

(And we are always open to anyone submitting stories and photos, just FYI, from our neighboring areas.)

Yes the Tri City Ledger don’t publish much about NHS but I appreciate the thought of the council recognizing our children and school. People need to look at the positive and not the negative and be thankful for the gesture. I also would like to thank William for his support of or area and schools. GO CHIEFS!!!!!!

I’d venture to say that this Website has a greater readership that the Tri-City Blunder, opps, I mean Ledger. For that matter, I think I’ll go out and see if I can find a copy of the “paper” to see if it even publishes its circulation numbers, which I would guess to be in the low thousands weekly like maybe 1,000 or 2,000 copies. Besides, the local mullet wrapper doesn’t even cover the tip of the iceberg of events that take place at the Northview. So the advertisement money would have better been spent at NorthEscambia.com, which by the way covers every event at NHS and the information current and not stale from a week of dust accumulation! But then again, William isn’t in Century’s Good ‘Ol Boy network like Joe Thomas and company.

Joe Thomas does not even cover NHS sports. what a waste of money.

Glad I don’t live in Century!! Seems like the money would’ve been better spent, giving all the Northview sports, say $50 and forgetting the one time full page ad in the Tri-City Ledger. All I can say to the Century residents is to remember this irresponsible move at the next election.

Council member Ann Brooks wrote “The purpose of this ad is two fold – it advertises the Town’s natural gas and recognizes the NHS football team.”

Recognizes the football team? What about the track team? The basketball team? The math team? The ROTC? The band? The cheerleaders? The list goes on and on. Will Century “recognize” them with $450 to Joe Thomas at the weekly newspaper?

Looks to me like it’s time to run for office and $450 keeps the weekly newspaper happy with you.

The purpose of this ad is two fold – it advertises the Town’s natural gas and recognizes the NHS football team.

While I’m struggling to pay my gas bill, I remember the $450 you overcharged the citizens of Century to buy your ad in a newspaper that no one reads anymore. Thanks for wasting my money.

    >>Thank you Town of Century for supporting our schools by advertising

Tell me how advertising in the weekly rag newspaper “supports’ Northview High School? It’s more like let’s pay off the newspaper for $450 and toss a measly $50 to the football team. It’s a slap in the face, and every one of them on the council should be fired (or at least voted out).

The $50 benefits the football team, and that’s a good thing. But why just $50? Why not a full page for $200 or whatever if costs and a sign on the football field for a few more hundred? That would support the team.

The $450 goes in the newspaper’s pocket and does not benefit the team *at all*.

    Shame, shame Century.

i’m against it. like throwing money down a hole. how does it benefit the town? just trying to buy votes with tax payer money.

Thank you Town of Century for supporting our schools by advertising. To a town
that has lost their schools, you show great character in supporting the schools that
    now teach your children.

  14. Citizen on August 16th, 2011 12:27 am

That makes absolutely no sense. How is spending $450 on a Tri-City Ledger ad going to support the football team? I know our council members read Northescambia.com. I would love to see a response from some of them.
