Century Inmate Busted For Smuggled Cellphone

August 11, 2011

A Century Correctional Institution inmate is facing a felony charge for having a cellphone behind bars.

Travis Montes Mitchell, a former resident of the Century area, was charged with smuggling  contraband into the facility. According to the State Attorney’s Office, Mitchell was observed by a guard placing the cellphone in his sock before he ran away and tossed the phone in the toilet. The phone was retrieved from the toilet by prison officials.

Mitchell was serving a 44 month sentence on drug and weapons charges.

    To William,

I actually love your site. It is one of the three links bookmarked on my phone that I check several times a day. I wasn’t trying to take a jab at you or your web site I was just attempting to send the message that it is common place for us to see. I understand that it makes a more interesting story if it is a former resident but to me, all 1400 or so of them are local residents since they live in Century and I see them daily. I know shanks just carry a DR but I just see the felony incidents like battery with a weapon, nearly beating someone to death, drugs and cellphones, and inmates masterbating at female officers in plain site and this honestly surprised me when I read it. Thanks again for all of your hard work and look forward to reading it daily.

I would have them out there on a yo-yo, from crack of light, to sunset. The only one they would want to speak with, is the Lord.

i watched prison programs on the TV regarding illegal cell phones and how they sneak them in…sometimes, hidden within basketballs that are thrown over the fences by accomplices on the outside…hopefully, there is a method in place, via prison communication networks throughout the country, to keep each other abreast of the latest methods being used…

    William,
I, for one, appreciate your efforts with NorthEscambia.com! If I see something “news” worthy happening in the north end, I can find out the details on here just about 99% of the time! You always seem to beat out PNJ and WEAR!! Thanks for what you do and thank you to your family for allowing you the time to report!

If there are felony arrests for the other incidents you mentioned, particularly of former local residents…yes, there will be articles.

There really are not many arrests on felony charges from CCI that run through the county jail where we know about them. Plus, I would imagine some of these things would lead to disciplinary actions, not charges.

Losing someone Else’s phone can come with consequences Mr.Mitchell. He was probably using it to order more drugs or a hit on someone, at least that’s what they tell us to think right?

why is this news? If this is posted as news, are there going to be articles of incidents of officers being spit on or having urine thrown at them? That is as assault on a LEO or what about the longer and sharper shanks that are coming up? Don’t think I would like to be on the receiving end of one of them. Like “off” stated, cellphones turn up weekly but now it is reported here now? Must be a slow news day I guess.

this happens almost every week…..so why is this the first report of a charge or is this the first charge an if so why???
