Former Councilman Henry Hawkins Running For Century Mayor

July 8, 2011

Former Century councilman Henry Hawkins has announced that he’s running for mayor.

http://www.northescambia.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/hawkins10.jpgHawkins prefiled Thursday with the Escambia County Supervisor of Elections. He was first elected to the town council in 2006. He ran again in 2010, but was defeated 174-144 by political newcomer Jacke Johnston in during a 2010 runoff.

“I want to make a change for the good in Century,” Hawkins said. “There’s an old saying that if you want to make a change, it has to begin with you. I want to be the one to make that change.”

Incumbent Mayor Freddie McCall prefiled Wednesday to run again in the October election.

C’mon Century You have some fine folks living there that would make a very good Mayor. The two options you have so far is not acceptable in my opinion.

mikebee, how did bondurant enter the conversation? i don’t agree with all thats done in flomaton at times; but he has done a good job. he has a business in century and flomaton. pushed for the four lane to i-65, and council meetings aren’t a three ring circus anymore. as for century, if you look back at minutes from the century meetings, mr hawkins didn’t bring much to the table.

Thank you Mr. Hawkins for running for Mayor, because we really need someone who will be for the residents of Century and not someone who is more interested in running their own businesses from the Mayor’s office. Exactly what has Mr. McCall done for Century in the past four years, other than tease the residents by making them think that some company will be locating in Century, which never happens.

    HAWKINS ALL THE WAY

Joe, not Hammonds. She was convicted of ethics violations and the town surely doesn’t need that all over again. As for Hawkins, he’s a divisive cancer on the town and didn’t even have the intestinal fortitude to see his last term in office through to the last meeting of the city council.

Century needs a change after all how many jobs are in century? If Hawkins can bring jobs in and boost the local economy then i’m all for him. Sometimes in order for changes to take place you have put the right people in those places and I believe that Henry Hawkins will do whats best for Century. After all how many businesses have McCall brought to Century and how has he boosted the economy for the town? The state and federal government have grants for small towns to develop and rehabilitate the towns but the Mayors won’t apply.

For instance Mayor Bondurant can get so many grants to develop Flomaton and bring business here but he won’t because he see’s that as competiton for his hardware store and lumber mill. If businesses come in and pay more than Bondurant then most of his employees would possibly leave for higher pay that’s why they won’t bring business in because not every will work for peanuts. Mayor McCall is just the same!
