Deputies: 8 Mile Drunken Chase Driver Was 2.5 Times Over Legal Limit

July 20, 2011

A 61-year Cantonment woman that led deputies on a drunken chase late last Friday night had a breath alcohol level two and a half times the legal limit, according to a report released Tuesday by the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office.

The Sheriff’s Office first received emergency calls about Elizabeth Ann Dawson of Lakeview Avenue headed north in the southbound lane of Highway 29 near Quintette Road about 11 p.m.. Multiple calls were received as she continued north through Molino.

An Escambia County Sheriff’s Office sergeant gave chase as he observed Dawson continuing to drive in the wrong lane near Highway 29 and Highway 97. The deputy drove parallel to Dawson in the northbound lane as additional deputies caught up to the pursuit. Deputies from the Century area responded south on Highway 29 during the chase, attempting to stop southbound traffic to avoid a collision.

Dawson continued northbound in the southbound lane until the eight mile pursuit ended when she stopped just south of Bogia Road — over 13 miles away from Quintette Road where 911 callers first reported her in the wrong lane.

Once stopped and out of her vehicle, Dawson was unable to stand without bracing herself, and keep telling deputies with slurred speech that she was sorry, according to the arrest report.

Dawson failed a field sobriety test and had a breath alcohol level of .199 and .192, the report states. The level limit in Florida is .08.

Dawson was charged with driving under the influence and fleeing and eluding police. She also received a traffic ticket for driving on the wrong side of the road. She was released from jail on $3,000 bond. She is due to appear in court for an arraignment hearing on August 5.

No excuse for anyone to get behind the wheel of a vehicle while under the influence, NONE. Personally, I believe that as part of any fine and sentencing that anyone convicted of DUI should have to observe atleast 1 autopsy of someone who has either died from DUI or been killed by a Drunk Driver…. Just saying. I promise you one thing, if you have ever smelt the odor of blood, alcohol, antifreeze, etc and witnessed the horrible injuries, heard the screams of loved ones, the sound of the JAWS of Life, the Flashing Emergency Lights all because someone chose to drink and drive, IT IS SOMETHING YOU NEVER GET USE TO AND SOMETHING THAT ALWAYS STAYS WITH YOU. Each wreck, each life makes a mark on your heart and though you may go on and work many, many more, you will always remember each and every one of those wrecks.

Like I said, maybe seeing the finality of it all for some of the people would make a difference for them. If it saved just one life I think it is worth it.

well … @ jeeperman …if the deputys had put her in the ditch and she had been hurt ppl would be screaming at the deputys that they did it wrong. I am with you knock her in the ditch , but they cant do that. They have to find a way to safely get her stopped while making sure that others on the road are safe also. I hope she loses her licence . What gets me is a lousy 3000.00 dollar bond. really ? they make it so easy to get out of jail . it should be a hundred thousand. let her sit there .

Why does it take eight miles before she is stopped?
Howcome she was not punted into the ditch immediately?

She should get jail time out of this…They should charge her for attempted murder too because if she would have ran into someone driving in the wrong lane she would have killed them or seriously injured them. STUPID PEOPLE!!!

Young, old, whatever…What’s wrong is wrong! Driving under the influence is plain WRONG! Let’s be thankful she did not kill or injure anyone. Yes, we can be angry, but let’s also be thankful. Thanks to the civilians who got involved and called the authorities, thanks to the authorities for reacting quickly. She needs to be held accountable for sure.

aint that the truth just an observer. but unlike kids who think they will never die, her countenance here seems to say “dont care if i live or die, it’s hopeless.” when these folks sober up it should be mandatory they volunteer their rear ends off at the local chapter of MADD. become their virtual slave as it were. clean the bathrooms, take out trash, SERVE for a change, those folks that suffer daily the loss bestowed upon them by drunk drivers drunk drivers.
