Deputies Seek Tips In Theft Of ZTR Mowers
July 6, 2011
The Escambia County (Ala.) Sheriff’s Office is asking for the public’s help in locating three high-value lawn mowers and arresting those responsible for stealing them.
Three John Deere Z-700 series zero-turn-radius mowers (similar to the photo) were stolen from Smith Tractor Company in Atmore sometime overnight June 29, according to Bruce Shue, an investigator for the Escambia County (Ala.) Sheriff’s Office. The mowers, he said, are valued at about $20,000 total.
Shue said the mowers were taken from outside the building and investigators have few clues.
Anyone with information on the crime is asked to contact the Escambia County (Ala.) Sheriff’s Office at (251) 368-4779 or (251) 867-0304. Smith Tractor Company is offering a $500 reward for information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the person(s) responsible for the theft.

My best friend had his landscape trailer (with two zero turn mowers) on it stolen from under his carport about two years ago. Never so much as even a bad lead on the case. The investigator suspected that they had been taken to Alabama to be sold or used by the theives. I hope this business has better luck recovering the machines than my friend!
just wonderin where the keys were….could this have been an inside job??? someone had to have known something about these machines….as noted earlier, these machines have to be free wheeled in order to be moved. You have to know where those mechanisms are on each machine in order to do be able to move them,,,,unless they weren’t set…???/
Wow a $500 reward, that will probably not bring any results.
the people who stole them could sell them, and pay off (more than $500)
anyone who knows something about it to stay quiet.
Well well well…. Guess they’ll quit banking on the assumption that no one would steal a zero turn due to the fact of their weight and hydrastat drive… (Early models couldn’t be “free-wheeled”)…. Hmmm, sure do wonder who could’ve figured out how to have pulled this heist successfully…..
This was at least a 2 man job…these mowers are extremely heavy and would have been really hard to push up on a trailer…I assume they brought a trailer with them to haul them away. They were prety brave to have stolen these right there on hwy 31….escambia lawn may better take notice and put their things up too…they are just down the street and we have always wondered why they leave their merchandise outside
These are new machines and will stick out, I suggest they will be used by or sold to a lawn service. It would be risky to sell them openly in the local area. I would imagine a few summers up at the prison farm will help these persons get their mind right. I bet they get caught!
3 of them were stolen. They could as someone suggested have
taken them to sell in another state. They also could have taken
them to one of these properties with multiple families living on them
and are using them to move their many acres. Or they took one
of themselves and one for 2 other relatives.
So many people here have property with barns to store them in
and even their property is surrounded with trees and no one would
ever see them again.
They are high priced mowers that most people could never afford
just one, and too many people anymore think, oh well, just take
what you want.
I hope they catch them and they serve some good time do some
chain gang stuff for many years.
I’m really getting tired of thieves.
(GRRR)
They didn’t have security cameras outside? Surprising!
THIS IS WHY YOU DON’T LEAVE EXPENSIVE MERCHANDISE OUTSIDE!!!! TO MANY PEOPLE ARE WITHOUT JOBS AND MONEY AND IT IS JUST TO TEMPTING TO THEM. I HIGHLY DOUBT THEY STOLE THEM TO USE THEM, THEY TOOK THEM TO SELL THEM..PROBABLY IN ANOTHER AREA SINCE THEY KNOW THE AUTHORITIES WILL BE LOOKING FOR THEM. I HOPE THEY CATCH THEM SOON
NICE ride!!! hope that they find the low-life scum(s) who STEAL!
