Tennis Anyone? Court Ready To Play In Century

June 27, 2011

Century has recently rehabilitated the town’s tennis court at Showalter Park.

A few months ago, the court was overgrown with grass, did not have a good net and was in a general state of disrepair. According to Mayor Freddie McCall, the tennis court had not been used in several years.

After a suggestion by a citizen at a town council meeting, the town cleaned up the court and installed a new net.

    The net is supposed to touch the ground and should be about a racket plus one racket head (turned sideways) in height.

    I’m so glad this was fixed!
    I’d just love to know one thing, though. Why is the net is still on the ground? I admit to being ignorant of the rules of tennis, but I don’t recall ever seeing a tennis court have a net like that.

    Dennis…
    A good suggestion, of course. However, since I live in Jay, I don’t think my input would be appropriate. We sometimes visit Showalter park with some friends who live in Century. Because of the dangerous equipment, we starting going to the park at Byrneville Community Center. :-)

    @Angie,

    The local thugs did not mess it up in the first place. Nobody used it much and with the city not keeping it maintained over the years it went down. I know we like to blame everything on the local thugs but this one was on the city. Now they need to concentrate on fixing the playground.

    The Town should look into a Federal Grant that will pay the salary of a Recreational Aide! I preformed this job at my local park in New York. I squeegeed Tennis and Basketball courts (after rain) , Lined baseball fields, did an overall view of the playground equipment everyday (sent a report to the Parks and Recreational Dept, which in this case would be the Town Council,) I also rented out basketballs and other equipment for a nominal fee. It was a great seasonal job, it help protect the park, and it allowed the park to be serviceable.

    Just a thought!

    Maybe if we can get some of these people playing tennis, they will stay out of trouble?

    Maybe they will now concentrate on fixing the broken playground equipment. I quit going there after my daughter nearly fell through one of the things from a missing board.

    It’s been about a year since I’ve taken the kids there. Perhaps they’ve repaired it.

    Side note: I read the headline and heard Daffy Duck’s voice asking, “Anyone for tennis?”
