6 People, Including Former Century Councilman, Involved In Molino Crash

June 27, 2011

Six people, including a former Century Town Council member, were involved in two vehicle crash  this afternoon in Molino.

The Florida Highway Patrol said 17-year old Jordan Satterwhite of Molino was southbound on Highway 29 at Molino Road about 5:10 p.m. when she turned into the path of a northbound vehicle driven by 57-year old Henry Hawkins of Century. Hawkins was unable to stop in time and his 2007 Nissan Pathfinder broadsided Satterwhite’s  2000 Isuzu Rodeo. Both SUVs came to rest in a concrete drainage ditch.

Hawkins was not injured. His wife, 56-year old Cynthia Hawkins of Century and 15-year old Keyto Sanders, Jr. of North Carolina were transported by ambulance to Sacred Heart Hospital in Pensacola with minor injuries. Two other passengers in the vehicle, six-year old Christian Sanders and Tasha Sanders, 40, were not injured.

Satterwhite was transported to an area hospital by private vehicle.

Everyone involved in the accident was property restrained, according to the FHP.

Satterwhite was charged with violation of right of way – improper turn, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Oh my gosh! This looks terrible, I hope that everyone invcolved is alright. I do have to agree, that HWY 29 has become some kind of madhouse racetrack. Something needs to be done…

    REGARDING:
I think everyone needs to keep their opinions to their-selves.”

It is your opinion nobody should express their opinions–which you expressed??

Please look at the other opinions. Everyone’s opinion is that it is good nobody died. Surely that’s okay?

Some believe traffic lights would help, others disagree. Surely those opinions are okay to express?? One or the other is lightly correct.

Some believe seat belts should be used to save lives. Surely you don’t fault them for expressing those opinions.

Some believe speeding is dangerous and should be warned against. Opposed to that opinion? Maybe it wasn’t a factor, but maybe it was. Say why you don’t believe it ever is or shouldn’t be discussed.

Some believe more care when driving would be in order. I assume you don’t like that opinion because it implies somebody may not have been sufficiently careful to avoid this incident. If you disagree, just express your opinion and explain why you think they’re wrong.

Some believe more or better guard rails might help save lives in the future. You are in favor of saving lives aren’t you?

    David for cautious opinions
    and living children

Yes Jordan is a teenage driver and yes the accident may be her fault, but she is human and you must remember that. She has great parents who have taught her to drive before letting her have the keys and drive. What a major lapse in judgement for people to assume things. She is a caring young lady with a loving family. I’m so thankful that no one was seriously injured. However, I have seen accidents happen with adults driving much more than teen drivers. Everyone makes mistakes and you should never judge them on it. I think that some people should see the real point in this. It was an accident as she did not mean for this to happen. And I’m sure the other vehicle did what they could to prevent hitting Jordan, but nice of you to assume that older adult drivers don’t speed. God had a plan and it will show itself one day.

I think everyone needs to keep their opinions to their-selves . It was bad enough that there was an accident , let’s leave it at that .

My son and I had just parked, facing 29 in the Pharmacy lot and heard the impact. We looked up to see the silver car airborn and flipping into the ditch. We immediately called 911 and starting praying. Very impressed with the speed in which the Molino Fire Dept. arrived on the scene! We pray for those that were injured to make a speedy recovery.

    Hi Jordie,
So glad you’re okay. I’m sending this link to my daughter who refuses to wear a seat belt. That saved your life! Give my love to Buster too, and remember there’s a reason they’re called “accidents”.
    Love ya,
    Miss Leta

So happy that every1 is okay!! I grew up here been here since I was in the first grade!! Light or no light traffic accidents will happen!! There is no reason for a traffic light there, there is no traffic jams in Molino!! That is the why most of us live in the country, not just for land and peace, but because we dont have to stop every eightth of a mile for a stupid light! Its free open roads to drive!! No light needed there just a lil bit more knowlegde for the less capable driver!!! Thank yall for ur time!!

  13. BRUNU ROWE on June 28th, 2011 10:36 am

TO REVEREND HAWKINS AND ALL INVOLVED THANK GOD HE WAS THERE ALSO!!

  14. Safebear on June 28th, 2011 10:33 am

Accidents do not just happen. Believe me, I’ve been in the safety business for over 20 years and 10 years before that I was a paramedic/firefighter. Someone caused that incident. Whether it was speed, failure to obey a traffic light/sign, texting, talking on the cell phone, putting on makeup, etc…. it was not an accident.

I did not know anyone in the incident but am thankful that all appear to be OK.

  15. Janet on June 28th, 2011 10:15 am

I agree with those who say a driver needs to know how to approach that intersection. Not only should drivers learn how to yield to Hwy 29 traffic but cars on 29 should be very alert there. People feel they can “beat” the other car when let’s face it; traffic on 29 are already going the speed limit or unfortunately over it and the driver wanting to pull out onto the oncoming traffic is starting, most likely, from a complete standstill. I do the 55 speed limit yet still deal with those impatient drivers who streak out from the stop sign on the side road.

OMG jordan i am soo glad your okay hope your mom isnt to mad about her car !!! last time i rode in it she was talking about how old it was and about how good it has been to her lol love you lots

I have 3 sons one has been driving for about a year one ready to get his regular licence, and one about to get a learners permit. We dont need a light, but to teach them to look where they are going.

  18. abry on June 28th, 2011 9:35 am

A traffit light is not needed.Drivers should pay attention to driving and this type accident would not happen.

  19. shaemae on June 28th, 2011 9:32 am

Accidents happen. I’m sure that teenage girl feels aweful about it. Let’s not lay blame. I’m just wondering why a drainage culvert that deep didn’t have a guard rail.

  20. cliff on June 28th, 2011 9:00 am

    dear resident,

Please explain to me how a traffic light at that, or any intersection, would be confusing?? Doesn”t red mean stop and green mean go? I have grown up in that area and many people do speed thru the area, and it can be hard for new drivers to judge speed. I have a 16yr old daughter learning to drive and I worry about her and all her friends every time they get on the road. Everyone should be a little more considerate and cut our young drivers some extra slack.

  21. rhonda on June 28th, 2011 8:36 am

love you jordie…glad you are ok-praying for the other people involved as well…accidents happen babe…just thankful you and the others are ok…

  22. resident on June 28th, 2011 6:37 am

This is the first bad accident there in a while, all a traffic light is gonna do is confuse people

  23. Annoyed on June 28th, 2011 1:38 am

It shouldnt matter if a young girl caused it. We should all be thankful everyone made it out with little to no injuries. Accidents happen and who are we to point fingers at people and complain about how experinced a driver is. We all have to get experince somewhere, no one did this on purpose. Everyone needs to remember that we could have been in Jordans place, we are all human and make mistakes. Im sure she was terrified and its sad she had to experince that period. My love goes out to both familys. There should have been a traffic light there a long time ago.

  24. Bjay on June 27th, 2011 11:12 pm

Its good to hear that everyone has minor injuries and should be ok. Please explain to me where this article says somebody was speeding. All of you are calling for a traffic light (just like always when there is a wreck) and using the excuse that people speed through there. According to this article a young girl pulled out in front of a 56 year old man. I doubt the 56 year old man was doing 80 like some of you are trying to relate this to. The problem is somebody made a mistake and caused the accident. Redlights do NOT prevent accidents. As I have stated many times once they put up a traffic light by my house I have seen 3-5 accidents a week. Before the light maybe 1 every 2 weeks. Heres an idea. Parents teach your kids to drive before you hand them the keys and let them go put my life in jeopardy!

  28. barrineau on June 27th, 2011 10:27 pm

I am at this intersection all the time , and it is a bad one . Hey Kevin White a traffic light is desperately needed here and at Atmore cutoff. Hope everyone is ok.

  29. littlerainy on June 27th, 2011 10:25 pm

When I go home to Molino every year for a visit I can’t believe they still don’t have a traffic light there. Have seen so many accidents at the cross roads. Also have seen the FHP stop car after car for speeding. What is it going to take to get people to slow down?

  30. north end resident on June 27th, 2011 10:23 pm

So glad there were no life threatening injuries! We all complain about vehicles that get low fuel mileage but I believe this accident proves many lives were saved by two larger vehicles (van & suv). I would hate to imagine how this may have ended had it been two small vehicles. Hope all those involved recovery quickly. God bless.

  31. Cesar Gonzalez on June 27th, 2011 10:15 pm

l know how dangerous is this intersection, and l don’t understand why the autority doesn’t order for a traffic control ligth at this location. l hope Hawkins family and the other people involved in this crash will be o.k. You are in our prayers!!!!!

Some horrific accidents at that crossroads, over the decades, glad no one was killed.

  34. Molino Mom on June 27th, 2011 9:08 pm

People would be surprised how many times the FHP are on Highway 29 between Highway 97 and Barrineau Park Road. I work on Highway 29 and have seen them pull over cars one right after the other, just does not seem to do much good.
I have also had an accident at Molino Road and Highway 29, a very bad place to cross 29. I try to avoid the intersection if at all possible.
If people knew how to use the median at an intersection it would help a lot. Trying to turn left is the worse. I guess they do not know why the median is so wide.

  35. molino jim on June 27th, 2011 9:00 pm

TRACEY: The FHP gets writers cramps from writing tickets at that intersection for speeders who are south bound and crest the hill and are speeding as much as 85-90 in the 55 zone, it’s the same thing north bound. Over the years we have had a number of people killed there in wrecks. It seems as if everyone is in a big hurry to get some where.

  36. Tracey W. Ware on June 27th, 2011 8:02 pm

My husband and I travel Hwy 29 from P’cola to Century or Atmore all the time to visit family & @ this particular intersection, it NEVER fails that we have to slam on brakes because people just roll through the RED CAUTION LIGHT to either cross to the other side or to turn out into traffic without & don’t seem to know how to use the merge lanes that are provided.
I truly hate that this accident occurred & I will pray for those involved, but I hope that maybe it sheds some light on this intersection so a Florida Deputy or State trooper can sit there & write not just running a stop light ticket, but will also WRITE MANY. SPEEDING TICKETS to many people & let’s not forget to mention the tourists that ALWAYS seem to IGNORE the fact that the speed limit through Molino is 55mph NOT 65 or faster!
May. All of those involved in the crash heal quickly and may God Bless them……..

    Sincerely,
    Tracey W.

That is a nasty little intersection in bad need of a traffic light.
People drive crazy fast from both directions on highway 29 and
I’ve witnessed a LOT of close calls when drivers try crossing from
one side of Molino road to the other.
