Pedestrian Struck And Killed On Hwy 29

June 9, 2011

A McDavid man died when he was struck by two semi-trucks hauling logs early this morning on Highway 29 in Bluff Springs.

Dustin Blake McFadden Smith, 21, was pronounced dead at the scene by Escambia County EMS.

The Florida Highway Patrol said Smith was standing in the outside southbound lane of Highway 29 just south of Byrneville Road at 2:35 a.m. when he was hit by a semi driven  by Russell A. Joseph, 49, of Repton, Ala.  Smith came to rest in the roadway, where he was struck again by another semi driven by Ashley Wayne Hawkins, 42, of Dozier, Ala. The FHP said Hawkins was unable to see Smith in the roadway due to poor lighting conditions.

Both trucks stopped a short distance beyond the accident site. One of the log truck drivers called 911 to and stated that they believed they had struck a pedestrian.  First responders found Smith  lying in the southbound lanes of Highway 29.

The Florida Highway Patrol said it appeared Smith may have been involved in a single vehicle crash prior to being struck by the log truck. Smith’s vehicle was located at the edge of a wooded area, well off the roadway. Smith’s car was not hit by either log truck.

Charges are pending the results of a traffic homicide investigation, according to the FHP.

The Escambia County Sheriff’s Office, Century Station of Escambia Fire Rescue and Escambia County EMS also responded to the crash.

Southbound Highway 29 remained closed until about 6 a.m.

  7. heart.broken on June 12th, 2011 12:22 pm

Dustin, what can I say. I miss you so much every day that I can’t even put it into words. My biggest regret is not seeing you before this happened, not getting to tell you how great of a guy you were, how great of a friend you were, or how great of a dad you were. Kayla will take amazing care of Kayden, she’s strong, you know that as well as I do. I know she’s hurting bad right now, we all are, but none as much so as her. There will never be another man to replace you in your sons life. He loves you so much, and he will always remember you. We’ll tell him all about you everytime we get a chance. And tell him how he looks just like you. Your in a better place now, you finally found some peace. Its going to take everyone a while to bounce back from this tragic accident, but remember cuz, we love you. We will always love you. I can’t even hear good memories of you without crying, rather its tears of sorrow for how much were all going to miss you or tears of joy at the memories of how amazing you were. <3

  10. Another Logger's Daughter on June 11th, 2011 2:51 am

My thoughts and prayers go out to all the families involved. This is a tragic accident. I know at night on some of the country roads it’s hard to see things on the side of the road, i.e. the deer that darts across the road in front of you from out of nowhere. Maybe that will help the poster with questions about roadway lighting. As a another logger’s daughter, please remember that eighteen wheelers can’t stop on a dime. My father laid his over thru no fault of his own a few years back. One of the worst calls you can get. All of the families touched by this incidence are suffering and need our prayers.

  24. Chris on June 10th, 2011 12:51 am

To Joe: Hwy 29 in that area is very dangerous driving at night, esp in a semi. I’ve drove it probably 4,000 times at night in a truck.. The road isn’t lit very well and the curves don’t help much either.. I’m only 27 and have been driving a semi for 9 years.. I’ve seen some very rough things during those years… some things preventable and some that really aren’t…

I really feel and pray for the families.. the young man taken away many years too soon.. and the two men that will have that event as a bad nightmare.. Passing judgement in times like these when it is so easy to do really isn’t the best.. Hoping that all the friends and family that know these people keep them in their hearts and be there for them..

  25. A logger's daughter on June 9th, 2011 11:38 pm

First, and most importantly, let me say that my thoughts and prayers go out to the Smith family. From the comments I have seen posted on here, Dustin was a wonderful young man and will be greatly missed. But as the daughter of a former logging company owner(who also drove his own trucks) my heart also goes out to the two men who were driving the trucks. My father was in an accident with his truck loaded once and people were injured and it was very hard on him. So, please, while you are praying, include these men and their families also. Thanks you.

  26. joe on June 9th, 2011 11:18 pm

legal things are a strange beast. not sure anyone really understands, seems like there are laws that catch all the left over things that might be wrong, if done at the wrong time or wrong place or with too much stuff……..

reality is the world lost a young man, and there is a family and friends and 2 truck drivers and their families hurting real bad now. i hope this man knew the lord and was welcomed into heaven with everlasting life. I pray for all involved. This is very sad.

  27. joe on June 9th, 2011 11:14 pm

can someone please tell me what this means “Hawkins was unable to see Smith in the roadway due to poor lighting conditions.”

does this just mean it was dark?
does it mean there was a headlight out?

It sounds like it could mean alot of things
and most important, what ever it is,
    is it a crime?

  28. Cookie on June 9th, 2011 9:42 pm

R.I.P DUSTIN :( :(:( HE WILL BE MISSED BY MANY OF FAMILY AND FRIENDS..MY PRAYERS GOES OUT TO THE FAMILY OF THE TRUCK DRIVER..MAY GOD BLESS YOU AND GIVE YA’LL FAITH TO MAKE IT.BUT TO THE SMITH FAMILY GOD HAS HIM N A BETTER PLACE NOW WITH HIS MAKER…JUST KEEP YOUR HEAD UP AND PRAY GOD IS STILL N CONTROL..RIP DUSTIN….WE LOVE YOU FORM YOUR WINDCREEK FAMILY N FRIENDS…

  37. Faith on June 9th, 2011 5:27 pm

Lord Jesus, please be with them now, let them depend on You.
Only You can really know what they are going through.
Lord, help us, as a spiritual family, to lift them up each day.
Give us sensitivity to know just what to say.

Lord, now be their companion, share in their pain.
Let them see beyond the clouds, the joy that comes through rain.

Help us, Lord, to comfort them with words that come from You.
Give us wisdom to know just what to say and do.

Lord, let them know we care for them, let them know our love.
Let them find his solace in the Balm that’s from above.

We pray that You will keep them close to You each day.
Wrap Dustin’s Family and Friends in Your loving arms,
    This is what I pray.

I am so glad that the Lord brought you into my life at such a young age, I watched you grow from a toddler into a fine young man!!! You have forever touched my heart and life and I am a better person for knowing you!!
Please tell God I said Hey, How u been :) with that beautiful smile you always had on.. I Love you just like you were my own and it is not goodbye , it’s until I see you again..
